I hear what you'er saying GPA, and I agree we need more border control and immigration enforcement, but I TOTALLY disagree that this is a make or break proposition for success. It is very effective rhetoric though. America itself came into existence and has become the most successful nation on the planet with less border protection than we have today. Politicians on both sides are scape goading, or playing the I'm-a-grunt race card as it serves them. When the chips are down, THE BORDER!!! always becomes the politicians battle cry. In the 70s and 80, both parties were using it, but has anything change in the passed 50 years?

 

Illegal immigration is rampant because there are jobs waiting for them here, take that away and you end the game.You want to stop illegal immigration? Simple, aggressively prosecute the employers hiring them. If there was a strictly enforced no ID, no SS#, no job policy, trust me there would be no immigration. Why doesn't this happen? There are huge profits being made on the backs of these "criminals, rapists and free loaders" and multiple domestic industries hire them every day. How many times have I heard "I will secure the border!" from countless campaigning politicians, only once in office, it's back to business as usual. They have actually increase the amount of money and resources, border guards, and have extended the wall but I don't think this is what slowing down the illegals.  Supposedly, Mexico's economy has been improving so the influx has slowed down.  Also a lot of illegals are not from Mexico, they are coming from other South and Central America. I do agree that if employers don't hire them then that will eventually discourage others to come to the US. But I have also read that there's not enough enforcement officers to check to see if employers are hiring illegals.  And let's face it, there's industries out there that rely on cheap labor pool.  Basically, there are too many moving parts to say that there's a fix.  All parts have to be working in sequence to make it work or else it's just a rallying cry for "bigger and taller walls".  And even if they did build more walls, they will find ways to dig tunnels, a la El Chapo.  Really, if there's a will there's a will.
