Judge finds Michelle Carter guilty of manslaughter in texting suicide case

In a case that hinged largely on a teenage couple's intimate text messages, Michelle Carter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter Friday in the 2014 death of her boyfriend, who poisoned himself by inhaling carbon monoxide in his pickup truck, a Massachusetts judge ruled.

Carter's own words -- preserved in hundreds of text messages presented as evidence over six days of testimony -- helped seal her conviction in the death of 18-year-old Conrad Roy III, Bristol County Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz said during a 15-minute explanation of his rationale.

"She admits in ... texts that she did nothing: She did not call the police or Mr. Roy's family" after hearing his last breaths during a phone call, Moniz said. "And, finally, she did not issue a simple additional instruction: Get out of the truck."

"USS Fitzgerald: Massive search underway for 7 missing sailors after collision"

This is massive, it is going to have a fleet wide impact. Policy, protocol, procedure will be re-written.

Everyone on watch, everyone on the bridge is going to get reduction in rank. Officer on watch, and any Officer on the bridge will never set foot on a ship again. The Captain will be in civies in a few months.

It happened in the dark but that's no excuse. Both ships had to have the most advanced radar systems out there. There's also AIS which large ships use to track other ships.Maybe the Navy doesn't use it so they can't be tracked ? Somebody on watch failed to be watching. It's surprising these things even happen anymore with so much technology at hand.Warning systems, timers a watchmen has to reset every few minutes to assure they don't fall asleep.A Navy vessel being involved is the most surprising part.

I'm not super surprised.  Have you seen how people drive these days?  Morons.  Morons everywhere...

I'd like to know how she transitioned from her message of hope at June 19 to out right goading and antagonism on July 4. What the fuck happened there?

First .... teenager. Not really up to speed with handling grownup things. Hell even some grown ups can't handle it.

Relationships 'drift', they ebb and flow, they end sometimes on one side only. Maybe she moved on and he couldn't. He then became 'difficult' and held her emotiomnally. Maybe she didn't believe he was actually trying to kill himself. Maybe he threatened this all the time and she was fed up with it, angry.

I haven heard any of the texts, don't even care. On the face of what's been submitted here, there is enough doubt here to drive a bus through. Who knows what was going on in her head at the time? If she gave him a gun and said 'kill yourself' then it wouild be more clearer. If she believed he was going to kill himself she is totally in the wrong. If she didn't believe he would kill himself she was careless and thoughtless and a death resulted and she is due some of the blame  Doing time??? I expect a suspended sentance.

Well, he actually used an SKS style rifle, not an AK style rifle.

Other than a fixed bayonet, this is not the stereotypical "Assault Rifle" as it does not have any of the "Evil" features that make it bad. No pistol grip, removable hi cap magazine, no forward grip,no collapsible/folding stock, no flash hider and it only holds 10 round internally in a very compliant fixed magazine.

Yet the liberal law makers have already started calling it an Assault Rifle.

Worse then that, both have state of the art electronics, with redundant systems. The war room(Navy ship) would have had at least 5 sets of eyes looking over the monitors. The merchant marine bridge would have sounded like you were standing next to an ambulance long before the impact.

Bearing in mind with the tonnage of the vessels (I suspect) you're referring to,once you've realised your mistake then evasive measures can still be too late to avoid a collision.
