After a couple hours of 320 grit over the filler primer

We blew out the garage, mixed up some blue, and started to spray!

It seemed to go on really nice but we didn't have good airflow so we actually had to stop and wipe all the overspray off the roof before continuing

Super smart camera couldn't figure out the color in these next three photos so it chose gray!  🤷‍♂️

From the color chip.  🤷‍♂️ 😊

We looked through hundreds of automotive manufacturer specific paint chips and they are ALL metallic.  It was difficult to even find just plain colors.  This chip was from a paint manufacturer generic chip set - kind of like what you see for house paints.

You should have seen us trying to find white.  There are 1,000 "whites" in those chips and none of them are white.  We also wanted "pink".  Forget about it!

blue, white, pink?  Interesting, can't wait to see it.  Nice work as always, great to see it in one solid color, I know that satisfaction after all that sanding.

We excitedly returned the next day to mask off the car for the 1st stripe.  Unfortunately, after fitting the trunk lid, I noticed we were leaving finger prints in the paint.  It was still soft and not ready for any additional work.  : (

(Still don't know why iphones won't give us the correct color in Jeff's garage)

We took a few minutes and removed window and gutter trim masking

And now we wait...

Sunday we checked on the car again and it's better but still not cured.  We'd like to let it sit outside in the sun but we're worried about cats jumping on it and making a mess of things.  Brenda asked why we don't put it up on the lift.

Uh...

100% cat safe!

Now bake car bake!!!  We've got work to do.

P.S.  Say Happy Birthday to Jeff!

Unsure at the moment.

We used the 2:1 paint to activator ratio the store instructed us to use.

What material did you use?

Generally a single stage is going to be ok to handle by the next day.

Apparently it was 4:1 paint to reducer the store instructed us to use.

It SHOULD have been 4:1 hardener - according to the specs on the paint (reducer is only 10% and probably optional)

So now we must wait.

We will switch gears (literally) and work on other parts of the car while the paint continues to dry/harden in the sun.

4:1 reducer only, that's correct.  Following the instructions given by the guy at the paint counter.

My friend BJ who works in the auto paint industry said it will harden, it will just take a while.  Sun baking is helping.  We will switch to mechanical tasks for the next week at least and re-visit the stripes when we can handle the exterior again.

I hope so. As a painter its been my experience you guys might be fucked on that one.

Itl eventually dry but I highly doubt it will ever cure.

As the paint continues to hopefully dry we spent tonight working on our list. Since we cant seem to find suitable gear ratios for the r180, we decided to swap out the 71C 5 speed for a SR 6 speed.  This should help our gearing and aid acceleration out of the corners. Some differences we had to account for were flywheel, clutch, transmission mount location and drive shaft length. Good thing the donor was Jeff's tan autocross car that is currently down for modifications, as these things were previously sorted out.

Out with the 71C! So nice to be doing this with a lift instead of on our backs under the car.

5 speed clutch in the foreground. The 6 speed clutch diameter is much bigger. Note no hub springs as there is a dual mass flywheel.

The 6 speed waiting to go in. Just hanging out with some race car driver feet.

Tighten that flywheel to spec there guys. Note the wrench being used to hold the flywheel still during the process. Lots of ways to do this, but I like this one.

New transmission is in place. Jeff must have aligned the clutch disc pretty well. Went in pretty easy.

And the business end of things. New shift pattern to get used to.

Just a few little things to button up yet before we can move on to the next thing. We ran out of daylight and time.

It's the lights in the paint booth. Camera should compensate but if mixture of incandescent and fluorescent, maybe LED, it may get confused.  I worked on a 5 color printing press and color depends heavily on the light it is viewed in. We had a special booth with 5000K lights to simulate sunlight that our eyes evolved to see in. A blue color viewed in red light will appear black. It'll look ok outside.
