What would be the difference between riding in the back of the car or riding in the back of a van? You have no idea what it is like inside his compartment, you assume it is a "trunk". It is more than lifting his body from a wheelchair to a seat in a car, he most likely would have bags and tubes to deal with for his body waste and he cannot give any assistance at all. You get a wheelchair, tape your legs together and your arms to your body. Then find someone to remove you from the chair and into a seat in the car, then get you back into the chair when you get where you want to go. Then back to the car into the seat and back into the chair when you get home. You couldn't do it for a weekend, he has to deal with it for the rest of his life. From the time period that this was done there weren't a lot of options. Would it have been better to remove the front, put an engine hoist in the back seat with a swivel and cut a large hole in the roof to get him in an out of the car?
