you have to apply for asylum its not automatically granted

Photo: GUILLERMO ARIAS/AFP/Getty Images

The asylum seeker must prove to the officer that there is a “significant possibility” he or she is eligible for asylum, and must also be subject to a credibility assessment. If the officer makes a positive finding, the asylum seeker is referred to an immigration court where they will have the opportunity to apply for asylum before an immigration judge. If the individual does not meet the credible fear screening standard, he or she can be deported.

Some individuals who are already in the U.S., such as those who may have entered on a tourist visa or other temporary visa, may also apply for asylum. In those circumstances, the process for asylum varies.

How many people are granted asylum in the U.S.?

“Asylee” is the term used in the U.S. for people who have been granted asylum. Last year, 35,502 individuals were granted asylum. According to U.S. immigration law, a person granted asylum is legally allowed to remain in the U.S. without fear of deportation. They qualify to work, travel abroad, and apply for their spouse or children under the age of 21 to join them.

Having a legal representative significantly increases the likelihood of being granted asylum. One study found that asylum seekers who had submitted an asylum application before the immigration court were five times more likely to be granted asylum if they had a lawyer.

Where do asylum seekers in the U.S. come from?

At the start of 2019, Venezuelans and Central Americans were among the largest groups of people to apply for asylum in the U.S.

Three million Venezuelans have left the country since 2015 due to growing insecurity, instability and violence. People living in

Asylum is not illegal—that's nuts.

Sorry, think I misread your post. You're not saying asylum is illegal, but some asylum seekers did not go through the process after being admitted? If they're too lazy to do the process, then sure deport them, but I don't think they should all be painted with the same brush.

I hope they defund the police in Seattle.

liberals need to feel the choice they make.when their car gets stolen or assaulted nobody will come.BLM/Antifa!

Not everybody thinks the police should be defunded either partially or wholly. Some do—sure. Police are an important part of a community, but we should look into additional ways to prevent crime. Like any job, some police will abuse there power and most will be fine.

I walked around CHOP—or whatever it was called—during the day and it was like a big festival. Small groups of people sitting around, the stench of weed, conversation, and bbq. During the night, it was a completely different story. Of course, that's anecdotal and I was there all of 15 minutes to see what it was about.

Let's not bullshit—the European democracies with social programs like healthcare are models most American liberals like. Very few people on the left want straight socialism, and basically none want communism.

China is not really that communist anymore—more like an authoritarian dictatorship sprinkled with nepotism-fueled capitalism. Which is too bad, because it is a beautiful country (aside from the pollution) with an interesting ancient history.

I guess, "nuh-uh, you are" is still a valid comeback in some circles. As far as hate, how about: migrant children in cages, unconstitutional bans on people of a certain religion, hiding the USS John McCain so Trump doesn't have a melt down... etc, etc, etc.

"He has no principles. None. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this."

"It’s the phoniness of it all. It’s the phoniness and this cruelty. Donald is cruel.” - Trump's sister

Cages

The cages were built by the Obama Admin. and used in the same manner

From the DHS website

Myth

DHS has never separated families for prosecutions before – this is a new policy in this Administration.

Fact

Illegal border crossers, including family units, were referred for prosecutions, as appropriate, under the previous Administration. The average referral rate for amenable adults from FY10 – FY16 was 21 percent.

Travel Ban

The travel ban Executive Order 13769 was approved by the supreme court it was not illegal

Sorry, is that something we're supposed to ignore now? Or are you caught up on the wording and would prefer chain link fences? do recall one of the administration officials referring to it as being like summer camp.

I suppose we can just "children that were separated from their parents and detained as a matter of a cruel Trump administration policy spearheaded by Stephen Miller."

The migrant children in  cages is hyperbolic bullshit, embraced by Democrats. Stop for a moment and realize American citizens are separated from their children everyday. For example:  If someone is operating a motor vehicle, with children as passengers and a police officer believes they are under the influence in violation of the law, then the American citizen and the children will be separated. The citizen will be arrested and the children will come under the control of social services. A great many "hoops" must be completed,, before they will be reunited.Additionally, an investigation to determine, at least, the relation of the citizen and the children, if the children have been abused, are malnourished etc. and the fact that this citizen, willfully placed the children in harm's way, will be addressed.

Take the aforementioned and substitute "illegally entering the United States" for "under the influence".

It would be better optics if the children apprehended, illegally entering the United States were housed in hotels, while the investigation is conducted. But, the volume of individuals, illegally crossing the border created the need for quickly constructed barriers, to separate, control and protect.

I would not be as quick to dismiss the crying for immigrant families separated by criminal activities if there had ever been a national campaign to stop the separation of American citizen families separated by criminal activities.

From your link:

The Obama administration separated migrant children from families under certain limited circumstances, like when the child’s safety appeared at risk or when the parent had a serious criminal history.

But family separations as a matter of routine came about because of Trump’s “zero tolerance” enforcement policy, which he eventually suspended because of the uproar. Obama had no such policy.

That's not correct. His niece wrote the book, and she recorded the conversations with his sister in private and released them. You can argue about the morality of that, but the truth is, that is what his own sister says about him in private.

You are correct that it was approved by the supreme court and thus the final version is not illegal. It was, however, struck down a couple times in lower courts due to singling out people of a specific religion, which is unconstitutional. They re-worded it.

I know it's a joke, but that's not the way journalism works. Stories are vetted (at a good newspaper) and journalists will often conceal the identity of sources. It's nothing new. This particular story was confirmed by many sources, including one at Fox News. Not only that, but Trump has shown open disdain for some military veterans and the intelligence community.

You're joking right ? The media has a constitutional right to lie out there asses. And they do.Vetted my ass.

Yea this guy has lost any credibility with me at this point.I'm surprised he hasn't claimed Trump is the Grand Master of the KKK yet.Detained ILLEGAL immigrant children bother him while Trump is in charge,i wonder if it bothered him while Obama was doing the same thing ? Obama also had some serious numbers regarding the deporting of illegals.Still Trump's fault.

I do have a legitimate question for the Trumpers. What's up with his shenanigans with the post office? I don't see how purposely sabotaging one of the few government institutions that actually functions is a benefit to the US. Many folks rely on the post office for their medications, paying bills, buisness dealings and keeping in touch with loved ones. For many there is not an alternative. The post office is the only service that delivers to every address in the US. The private carriers do not deliver everywhere because it is fiscally unfeasable.

For keeping in touch with loved ones there are far better and instantaneous ways like e mail and f/b with pictures even. Bills can be paid on line. If anyone is still using the US mail to pay bills then they are in their 80s. Having to wait several days for business dealings to progress is ludicrous. Most if not all are done on line, faster and secure. Medication delivery? I'll give you that. Up until the  1990s the mail, with all it's faults, probably was reasonably fast. But when FedEx and UPS started making in roads it was fucked. I bet the government is constantly bailing them out and it's probably unionized and they want more more more and do less. Up here the postal cocksuckers go on strike at Christmases and picket on the sidewalks. People still honk to 'like' them but I give them the finger for lip locking the government tit.
