In the grand scheme of things, the Romans tenyure was more like unwanted visitors who don't speak English and hog the whole bathroom.

Well that's something to ask Jesus when you see him. The Jews saw them as occupiers and were in revolt and civil unrest because of them. When an empire swallows up your country they are occupiers, forcing their laws, (often religion) taxes, culture etc. on you. When the empire fractures, most last about 250 years, these countries rebel or try to break away and become autonomous again.
