HOGIE
What was the turn around time on the parts? Is there a plan for a bam-slam epoxy bath after it gets dipped or is it going to scooters hand for body and paint work? 1 Quote Link to comment
denmarkboy
What was the turn around time on the parts? Is there a plan for a bam-slam epoxy bath after it gets dipped or is it going to scooters hand for body and paint work? I am pretty sure all the parts except the cab will be done monday . The cab may also be done, not sure yet . Scooter should already have the donated material for the paint .. He did agree to fix a few things, but not everything . So guessing it will have to come back to my place after the dip ( briefly ) so we can straighten it a little . It would be great to have your skills on the truck that day . This morning I have a few things to do , So I will be getting a later start today . But plan to do some sanding on the bed this afternoon . 1 Quote Link to comment
Brohemius
Stopped by Denmarkboy HQ this afternoon. Got the bed down on some stands and started sanding a little... Got the top rails almost all to bare metal. Some other sanding. Also drilled out the gas flap bolts to remove it. Alot of bolts will need to be drilled on the bed. Just thought i would share what was done today. 5 Quote Link to comment

DanielC
3M makes these Clean and Strip Disks. they work really good at removing paint, plastic filler, primer, and rust, yet they are really gentile on good steel. The open design on them prevents them from clogging, or loading up. You can get them at some hardware stores, or auto paint suppliers. Home Depot has a flat 4" version that fits small angle grinders. These nylon brushes are also good for a final clean on metal. They remove paint, and rust slower than the above disks. They are at Ace Hardware stores. 2 Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
The aircraft stripper works well, but plan on putting down plastic and be careful not to step in the goo. Another option that I've tried on Mend......24 grit on a 4-4.5" grinder with a HF backing pad...holy crap does it take paint off fast, but make sure you use a fairly light touch! http://community.ratsun.net/topic/8175-mklotz70-project-mend/page-19?do=findComment&comment=277466 You can also you a propane torch.....it will soften and blister the paint up and you can scrap it with a putty knife. I'd use an 1.5" wide(no more since it will cool quickly. Better to heat/scrap a smaller area than to try to bubble up a big area. When the scrapping cool on the ground, they can be swept or vac'd up......way better than the stripper goo, but a bit more tedious. Mend had several layers of latex paint on it......so this may not work as well with enamel/laquer. You might want to use a 36-60 grit disc with the grinding.....I was grinding very thick paint! 2 Quote Link to comment
TENDRIL
Be weary on using low # grit disk it should only be used on areas that are getting bondo! Or else you will have to bondo the entire bed ! Nothing lower than 80gt on straight areas!! Primer will fill this with a coat or two. But will not fill anything lower than 80 without excess coats of primer 2 Quote Link to comment
