That's too bad about the VA.  My son asked me about joining the military during HS and wife and I said no.  Why, they, the VA and military, does not take care of it's own.  A lot come back from Iraq and the Middle east with symptoms of PTSD, homeless and jobless. 

 

The suicide rate of returning veterans is completely unacceptable. Our veterans should have the full support from the gov and get the very best care available.

 

No exceptions.

As a VET I have a lot of appreciation and compassion for returning VETs or anyone who served.  There's a brotherhood and an understanding among VETS who served.  Our government is not doing enough to take care of their own.

Depends on the source i guess. I vaguely remember some place publishing something last year about Denmark being the largest average, but I will go with Congo.

Heck, it ain't just veterans. Certain army posts are known to have substantially suicide rates than others. In my day, Bliss, Drum and Hood were at the top of the list.

 

In the late 1990s/early 2000s, if you were prior service army and returning to active one of the "perks" the recruiters gave you was the ability to choose your duty station. Bliss, Drum and Hood were the crown jewel turds topping that list.

In '99 when I briefly returned to active Bliss was what I chose. I got to know the post retention NCO and he explained the list to me. Bliss (for me) wasn't bad but we had lots of guys swallowing pills and slitting their wrists to get away from the place. I'm not sure why but I know the esprit d'corp that I knew in '89 when I first joined was gone in '99. Drum is 10th Mountain and Hood is III Corp and those are both hard charging units so you kinda expect a higher rate of suicide but Bliss is just, well, nothing but a crappy army post in a litter box next to equally shitty El Paso and Juárez.

Well said. I have a buddy who's a Vietnam vet. For years he avoided the VFW and DAV like the plague. I didn't get to see him for a few years and when I did he was a VFW commander, DAV counselor and touring schools to talk about the American flag and patriotism. When I asked what made the change in him he told me it was two things: 1. He saw the guys returning from the desert being ignored and abused by the VA like his generation was in the 1970s and -this is gonna sound horrible- 2. most of the WW2 vets had died off and those remaining were no longer making the veteran communities hostile to his generation. It's immaterial now anyway as the VFW, the American Legion and most fraternal organizations (Elks, Moose, Eagles, etc) are dying off anyway.

 

I joined the VFW for a year and I'm not even a vfw but their numbers are failing quickly and they now take anyone with a clean DD214 and the bar is open to the public so they can generate enough revenue to keep providing cheap drinks to the vets.

 

The chaplain we had at my VFW was a WW2/Korea/Vietnam vet who had been wounded in each conflict. We had a guy who was a ball gunner (don't remember the plane) and the entire crew abandoned the damaged plane and didn't tell him. He jumped out in German-occupied Holland where the resistance got him to Paris before the SS got him. He was in civies with no military ID when he was caught. The SS wanted to shoot him for being a spy when he remembered he'd sewn his dog tags into his lapel. He got them out, showed them to the SS commander who said, "BAH! These are fake! I can buy them at any dime store!" but they let him live. We had three tunnel rats in the place, all kinds of combat arms dudes and then >*me*< with my stories of changing hydrovacs on deuces in comfy stateside motor pools and that one time I chewed out a two star NJ guard general (I was an active duty E-3) because he was in a civilian suit and I assumed his paper name tag marked "MG Hamblin" indicated his first two initials and last name. Also, I was almost twenty years younger than their youngest member. I could talk to them about basic and AIT but much else though I do still go there to drink and eat and buy raffle tickets - those dudes are always raffling guns off!
