Truly, the public has deep emotional connections to their pets, and folks can't get enough pics/vids of cute animals to get those warm fuzzies. With very little political risk, it makes sense to push an animal cruelty bill forward because folks will throw down serious money for animal protection, no questions asked. Oppose it, for what ever reason, you look like Cruella Deville, which opens the pork door wider.

For a while it was illegal in California to drive with your dog un-belted in the bed of your pickup but legal to drive with your unbelted kids in the same bed.  I guess dogs were more important than kids!

My first car was my dad's 4 year old 2dr. '64 Dodge. It didn't even have seat belts. Un-padded metal dash, radio knobs that stuck out, no side view mirrors. The front seats were hinged so you could get in the back but they did nor lock in the upright position. Rear seat passengers thrown forward when braking came right into the front. Worse the master cylinder was a single so ANY leak affected all the brakes. All legal for that year. We've come a long way against public opposition to change, apathy and outrage at loved ones killed and injured when the car makers could have prevented this for a few tens of dollars..

Sounds like my old 1955 Chevy!  I left it in Japan.  Wonder what is left of it.

I just loved the vacuum operated windshield wipers on my '55. When passing a semi in the rain you would have to let off briefly so the wiper could make one pass to clear the rain. Anything past 1/3 throttle they stopped, always when you needed them the most. I think the '58s were electric.

I jury rigged an electric wiper motor into my '55 Bel Aire.

It's a rainy Sunday, so what do I do? I entertained myself with research, because a curious mind is a terrible thing. I highlighted the bones of my findings though, so as to not distract from the terrible things everyone else does to entertain themselves.

California Vehicle Code § 23117 requiring dogs be tethered in truck bed was adopted in 1987, took effect Jan 1, 1988

California Vehicle Code 27315 VC seat belt law was adopted in 1985, took effect Jan 1, 1986, and it includes passengers in the back of a truck. That said, I loved riding in the back of a truck as a kid.

Indeed, the vehicle portion of Florida's animal protection bill looks like Politics 101: Making A Mountain Out Of A Mole Hill

On average, there are over 6 million passenger car accidents in the U.S. every year. Based on a randomized sample of data from police reports, it's estimated that less than 12,000 happened because of unrestrained pets in the vehicle. That's 0.002% of all accidents.

In a crash traveling at 30 mph, a dog weighing 10 lbs can exert over 300 lbs of force. Would this dog, whether tethered by a leash/harness or housed in a crate, survive such an impact? Let alone at freeway speeds. None of these are designed for accident survival like our seatbelts and airbags, so wouldn't your dog be safer in the padded passenger compartment?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

39.5% of motor vehicle crash deaths in 2020 involved drunk driving.

29% involved speeding.

6% of fatal car crashes involved distracted driving.

Of which, 64% were described as “lost in thought (daydreaming).”

Another 12% were engaging in cell phone use.

Other distractions listed but no % given were:

*eating and drinking,

*talking and interacting with people in the vehicle,

*smoking related,

*fiddling with the stereo/entertainment/navigation systems,

*looking for dropped items,

*and people or events outside the vehicle.

Distraction from unrestrained pets in the vehicle wasn't even identified on the NHTSA's list. But, if you're looking to persuade , it's put at the top of your list.

Good 'ol Bernie.  Charging big bucks to attend his anti-capitalism book tour..

I know this is FOX News, but I've seen this on two or three other sources now..

Sounds like Bernie's busy capitalizing on his socialist ideals.

Around the time I was in high school, (maybe a year or two after) Subaru came out with a little pickup that had two seats in the back.  They were up against the cab facing the tailgate.  Maybe it was called the Brat?  Not sure on the model name, but damn we thought that was funny looking..

I also used to drink from a lawn hose, and I'm still alive after all this time.

As a kid, I was perfectly behaved, took every precaution, ate only healthy natural foods, and watched only educational programming. Now I'm a rude, reckless, unhealthy old fart who watches nothing but porn. Thank god I grew up.

Do you remember those little handle bars on either side of the Brat's rear seats? Hang on kids, Daddy's gone jump the curb!

Around here every Subaru driver (other than WRXs or STis)  drive glued to the center lane going 10 mph slower than everyone else.  In all seasons.  Good thing they have that AWD  and the "love".

No I was NOT! 🤪

I got my first Outback Sport when I was in Holland............I was sideways 80% of the time, during the winter! 😎

That's better than the Prius drivers out here in Socal stuck in the fast lane and carpool lanes going 65 mph.

Bought my wife a used 98 outback wagon 16 years ago. Other than the headgaskets, a slave cylinder and a knock sensor it is going strong around 180k miles. It's a 5 speed and although I thought nobody with testicles should drive such a car I will admit it's kind of fun. Smooth quick revving engine and seems to have lots of torque.

Mine was the smaller Impreza Outback Sport (pre WRX), so hopefully not as "testicleless"!! 😂 The smaller 2.2L didn't have the same head gasket issues as the (Wagon) 2.5L, so I got well over 200k out of mine.  Issue was I bought it when I was in Michigan & by the time I moved here to CO, the rust/rot was already bad.  Sold it here for $500, running great, but rotten.............the guy was gonna jack it up & build a beater!
