Charlie69
Nice Mike it is good to see you working on mend. I was beginning to think that mend would become your great grandaughters truck when you finised it! Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
LOL! I was starting to think that too. Got the oldest and his fiance moved out today, so I have my sewing room back! :) I then dropped a couple hundred at HF on tools.....got they're $299 sandblasting cabinet on sale for $219, 20% off....$175 final :) A100addict came over and we figure out where to squeeze it in one of the sheds, so hopefully, I can get that setup this week. I'm going to run a much more aggressive abrasive in it for better rust removal. Got a few other things too. Most of tomorrow should be spent on Mend....hopefully, some progress pics tomorrow night. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
Mike I found this real helpful. http://www.tptools.com/StaticText/airline-piping-diagram.pdf Keep up the great posts and work Mike. Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
Thanks Charlie. That is a good reference...I've come across it before. I think I'm going to simply run another 50' hose to it. I'll put a water separator between the hose and the cabinet. I'll have to see about another foot switch too :) 1 Quote Link to comment

mklotz70
Thanks guys. I'm definitely not a bodywork guy, but then again.....I always say I'm not a machinist either....but I guess I get by :) I'm just glad this rig is in pretty fair shape!! 2 Quote Link to comment

mklotz70
Thanks guys. A bit of progress was made today, but not anything worth taking pics of. There should be more in the next couple of days :) Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
This new addition might just come handy :) I still have to run the air line and pick up a shop vac for dust control. A100addict helped put it together....it seriously takes two people to reach some of the bolts. So after trying some paint stripper...A100 and I decided to try a different method. I put a 24 grit disc on an electric grinder and dang did it cut quick. It didn't have very good support, so off to harbor freight to see what they had. Came up with a couple of nice backing pads that do the trick nicely! The debris on the floor is about 5min worth of grinding!! I'm not in a huge hurry to strip it to bare metal since it will still be awhile before the weather is warm enough to paint. Got the rims/tires off. Separated them from each other. One tire is "like new" and will become the spare. The rest are going away at some point. The rims will fit in the new blast cab so they're off to the side until that's set up. Brian...Do.....sorry you have to see your baby like this! :) It sure would be nice to start putting stuff back on instead of constantly taking stuff off. I still have some more dismantling to do before things start going on. I'll get it turned around and completely up on stands today.....starting to feel like Canby is next week and I don't have a hope in hell to make it :( I'll get as far as I can...which, hopefully, will be finished!! :) Time to get at it!! Not sure I'm looking forward to straightening this out. I hoping to make the tail gate removable...basically two options....removable bolts, or removable hinge. The bolt wouldn't be much work to do, but being able to remove the hinge would make it a bit harder to steal and cleaner when removed. Maybe I'll just start with the bolt....do the hinge if I have time later. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Ah, Sunday morn with coffee and Mike. Good going and good morning. I had a '71 back in '77? and had to break the rear tire holder to get the spare.... it was the original nylon tire, never been off. Had JDM air in it too. 1 Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Could you notch the hinge? My CJ tailgate and windshield come off when put at a certain angle. The hinge pin is flat at that angle. I can take a pic or two if you like. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
Hi Mike, I have been using the flapper discs for flatening welds and removing paint. I get them in 24 & 60 grit from Harbor Freight. the 60 grit realy cuts I have not tried the 24 grit yet. I use them with my 4" angle grinder. Quote Link to comment

I think I'd like a sturdier hinge for that....these bend easy enough without a slot in them. I'll keep that in mind....I do like that idea. I'm only going to hit the big flat areas with this grinder setup....I'll use strip-all discs for the tailgate and the sandblaster for the bed hooks. 1 Quote Link to comment

mklotz70
Now, with the pending arrival of the Fairlane, I'm even more motivated to finish this rig!! :) I spent a good bit of my weekend rearranging parts in the sheds to make room for Mend parts. I think I have things squared away, for the most part. I got the tail gate and door off. Other than the bed being removed for paint, I think that's about all that's coming off.....not that there's much more to come off. I was thinking about doing a column shift for the auto, but that would be a month long project just on it's own....so I dug out a 510 floor shifter and I'm thinking I'll use that :) The hinge pins are pinched in... HF pry bar and a hammer opened them up nicely.... This bolt is a bit long. I'll get a slightly shorter bolt and put a nyloc nut on it. That should serve quite nicely as a removeable hinge pin. I dug out the seam sealer on the pass side...I'll see about hitting it with the sandblaster in the next day or two. If this were a woman stripped down to this point, it would almost be pornagraphic!! ...hhhmmmm.....I'd actually like to see this lady with a lot more on!!! I guess I'd better stay busy if I want to see her getting dressed anytime soon! :) 1 Quote Link to comment
watsonius
Hey Mike- looks great. Not to worry- we are no strangers to the process of disassembly before restoration. Not sure we will make Canby and in any case it is more important to do the job right, so don't get in a major rush on our account. :) 1 Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
Thanks Brian :) I understand not making Canby. If I were in your shoes, I'd have a hard time justifying the time/cost to see it when you've got a front row seat on the build for free :) If you heard about the '64 Fairlane I just bought, you know that my motivation to finish is even stronger now!! 1 Quote Link to comment
