Stoffregen Motorsports
Hopefully you put a dab of RTV where the rear main cap meets the block and where the timing cover meets the block. Looks great! 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
What color is that on the timing cover? 1 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
There’s a smear of black RTV around both sides of the entire gasket. Cover is called super chrome, but I think they overcooked the clear and it yellowed a little bit. 2 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Is that the 2 pc manifold you have for the dual carbs??? Cant believe they still sell those Horrible design. I like the one piece ones as you can do it all at once and have it all set up and not fuck with the sync ect...... the common mikuni manifold. where one can just unbolt it and replace you intake gasket and put back on. 1 Quote Link to comment

I already had to buy 2 cold start delete plates from them because the cold start mechanism wouldn't fit on the manifolds. Hopefully once these go on, they'll be there for a long time. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I have had Felpro intake gasket failures in the center they blow out giving me the headache exhaust smell in the carb. It might be from the bolts working loose then it blows out but had it off 2 times already. ITS NICE JUST TO UNBOLT AND PLACE ON THE SIDE. I rencentluy got the 3 or 4 SSS gaskets and should last longer 1 Quote Link to comment

mainer311
Got a ton done tonight. Only thing holding the L16 in is the mounts and transmission. I mocked up everything on the L20 and it was all looking great, until...the intake and exhaust manifolds don’t fit next to each other. Looks like I’ll need to modify the areas where the smog pump injection tubes are. I had oil drain plugs with aluminum crush washers in there, but they’re too big in diameter. I’m going to grind down the faces of where those tubes normally are and install M14x1.5 plugs. Also, someone at one point mitered the block vent tube and now it doesn’t fit with it like that. Had they kept it straight, I would have been fine. 2 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
That is a stock truck engine block vent pipe. Car engines had the straight ones from my experience or the Japanese replacement engines with 2 dip stick locations so the engines could be used in a truck or a car. Hard to see but the 90 degree angled crankcase vent pipe comes out of the block different then the straight pipe. Hard to see because of black on black. Get a straight one for your engine or make one. Edited April 6, 2021 by Charlie69 3 Quote Link to comment
d.p
What @Charlie69 said, mine comes straight out and you could probably just USE the one off your L16 as it looks to be identical to the one that came on my L20B. Edited April 6, 2021 by d.p 2 Quote Link to comment

That's a good idea. I might try that. If not, I'll see if I can modify this right angle one. 1 Quote Link to comment

Nickle has a yellow tinge, chrome a slight blue tinge in full light. 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
Will still probably hit the casting lines on that intake manifold if that is the one you are using. I am using the same one as @Charlie69 though cause I was too lazy to try and grind those ridges off. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
The block holes are different for the straight and the angled. You can also take a ball peen hammer and dent the pipe for clearance. Edited April 6, 2021 by Charlie69 Quote Link to comment

mainer311
Ah, I thought you meant the intakes. I figure I'll keep crushing, bending, and smashing the tube that's there until it fits. 1 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
2 nights to get the motor out? Not bad. Gratuitous post-misery selfie: 4 Quote Link to comment

mainer311
Yeah, about 6 hours total. And that’s with me climbing through a jungle gym of 2 engine stands, a press, and a cherry picker with parts and tools strewn about, while also working on the L20b. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
I am old but I think I could beat your time only because I have literally pulled close to 100 engines out of 520s/521s over the years. I enjoy tearing shit apart! LOL Quote Link to comment
mainer311
To be fair, I could probably do it quicker, but I'm also trying to keep oil and coolant off the garage floor. 1 Quote Link to comment

mainer311
Have you guys ever seen these two clutch throw out bearings? Both are from Exedy clutch kits. The one in the truck is from the standard clutch kit for the 521, and the new one is from the “NSC581” 600kg kit from a roadster. Which one do I use?
