That is odd man because for sure he was doing it at one time. I would ask him if he plans on making them again.

@Jakes Makes That guy is making repop ones, so reach out to him. I have one of the ebay shifter boots (but with a 5 speed) and it works although its split in a couple places so I think at this point the only real route is a custom one. I had asked the dudes who did my seat if they could do one and they said yes but I never went back to move forward with it. Old pic from when I still had the 4 speed and the boot looked good:

haha, my mom said my truck looks like a gardener's truck. Gave me a metal cross to hang in the window to really set it off too.

so what the fuck does that mean for me? Either my tach is wrong or I have some weird rear gearing?
  10. Yeah hella nice today. High 60s in the DMV and driving my truck for the first time in awhile.

Without a doubt 70mph @4k give or take. I think my trans has the wide 5th but like you no idea what that correlates to. Also my throttle is so jerky in low gears. Like the gas peddle or the throttle cable gets stuck/hung up and when it lets go the truck will lurch forward. I end up feathering the clutch to get it to smooth out but it’s annoying as hell. It’s been doing this since I swapped all this over and for the life of me can’t figure out why.

Yeah timing light has a tachometer and will see if my tach and the light are inline.

Yeah, unless I am going faster than that 70 but it would be odd if I was. Because I am not blowing by cars (55MPH speed limit) at 4-4.5K RPMs either so its not like I am going 80 or 90. I will test it out in a little bit and report back as I have to run some errands.

Any particular year 720? And it will drop in to my 521 rear end?

Yeah it does have the 280zx pinion in it cause I never changed it. Should I have swapped pinions from my 4speed (long gone)? Tires are 195/50/15s but again I want lower RPMS on the freeway so what is the easiest way to get that without having to drive slower?

@datzenmike I have a cam'd and bored L20B, dual mikunis, a 5 speed out of a 79 280ZX and 5th gear on the freeway at what I think is 70 is right around 4-4.5k RPMs. Hard to tell because my speedo is off but using GPS on my phone I am pretty sure that is in the ballpark. When GPS says 70 my speedometer says a 100 lol.

Well new oil pan gasket and flattening those needle seals did the trick. No a speck of oil from the pan. And removing the cross member and the center link made it super easy. Why anyone would do it any differently with the engine in the truck is beyond me. I am wondering now what I can do about my rear end? I would really like to get my RPMs down on the highway. Are people swapping out diffs/rear ends on these fuckers?

    My 1971 521

I filed them down with a tiny file. Should be good to go.

    My 1971 521

FWIW I just took out the center link and cross member which was easy peasy lemon squeezy.

I think I know why my pan was leaking. The stupid rear main seal needle gaskets were protruding out at the bottom of the block. Therefore the gasket/pan wouldn’t lay flst against the block. so I trimmed those and tried to get them as flat as I could and wondering know if I should use a cork gasket, gasket maker or both?

    Just bought a 521

My 521 is registered as historic so it doesn't require a front plate so I am good there. But my other cars I refuse to run them and have gotten ticketed like 3 or 4 times for it. Its such a pointless law which in the end a pure money grab from the state of MD. $70 fine for not front plate and if you go to court they will reduce it to $25 then charge you $25 for court costs. So they will get $$$ one way or the other.

No it isn't, enforce your state's laws not some other ones. I was driving cross country and my girlfriend got pulled over in Nebraska for no front plate and her car that was registered in Utah as well as her license. Stupid LEO wrote her a ticket for no front plate and she just threw that ticket away. Nobody should be pulled over or ticketed for something as trivial as that.

They are OK, the covering on them is falling apart but the clamps are nice. I put it that way because I wanted it to be easy to get off if I had to take the radiator out after I put it all back together. Probably ok to move it now seeing as I have a little under 2k miles on this fucker since swapping the drivetrain.
