flyerdan
Freighter crew be damned, what concerns me is how a naval vessel could allow something the size of a fucking city block sneak up and smite it like that. Supposedly we spend billions of dollars a year on sophisticated electronics and training to prevent incidents just like this, as well as more covert things like torpedoes and missiles. Doesn't bode well when it comes time to sidle up to the bargaining table when budget time rolls around. 4 Link to comment
125 CSL
They show the path of travel for the container ship, it makes a 90 degree turn right into the Fitz. The container ship could actively be looking to run into any Navy ship away where at any time,...even if all of the electronics are out on the navy ship,...the Navy ship is at fault in the collision. One simple reason. Every day 24 hours a day men(and I guess now women) are on watch. Now add in the many layers of electronics, a bridge with at least 180 degree viewing field, men on watch outside on the deck, and you still put your ship in the path of a container ship. 1 Link to comment
racerx
I think we r relying too much on technology. Back in the days, you would have shipmen, w binoculars, watching out in the distance. Link to comment

q-tip
From what I heard they were travelling in the same direction and the container ship turned directly into the Navy vessel. Kind of like driving on the freeway and the guy two lanes over makes turn right into you. Link to comment

Ships that are on a course are going to be easier to predict and avoid than one wandering aimlessly/eratically. Yes it should have been able to avoid but visually at 1AM? unlikely. 2 Link to comment
john510
That container ship had serious autopilot issues or somebody wasn't paying attention.Or both. Those course changes are weird. That video doesn't show the actual collision ? 1 Link to comment

Part of the reason people are on watch 24/7. At any time the Captain could call a man overboard drill, or for that matter a real man overboard. The men on watch are there to notice everything going on around the ship. Even if the electronics did not catch the ship, which I in no way believe the men on watch would have. Break down in communication? Officer did not believe the communication? Officer was to slow to act on the communication? 1 Link to comment

a.d._510_n_ok
Hey.... Kennedy ran his boat under a Japanese destroyer in the dark. I imagine they had lookouts. well, not exactly. JFK was a decent dude who told the crew not to worry about standing guard that night. The name of the Japanese ship that struck them wasn't known until after WW2 because the Japanese had no clue they had hit anything so nothing was recorded in anyone's log. After the war ended the Japanese logs were reviewed and eventually dates and coordinates fingered the culprit. BTW, JFK wouldn't have been in a combat theatre but for his inability to control his libido. His father, Joe,Sr., was ambassador to England at the time and a powerful political figure who kept the young man in D.C. out of harm's way right up until the FBI offered daddy proof that JFK was diddling a married woman who was believed to be a German spy. When daddy saw the pics he figured shipping Jack off to war ought to uncouple the pair. Daddy Joe wanted to be ambassador to England so bad he could taste it but was largely disliked by everyone, especially FDR, the man who could give him the job. FDR and someone decided that if Joe would come into the Oval Office and drop trou he could have the job. Joe was summoned and FDR (fibbing) told him that if he really wanted the job he would need to inspect Joe's legs because the Brits often wore short pants and FDR didn't want some weird anomaly on Joe's person to offend them and cause an international incident. Joe yanked his pants down so quickly that FDR was taken aback and, laughing, said, "Well, Joe, I guess you really want it - it's yours!". FDR would regret giving him the job because Joe Sr, just like JFK and Joe, Jr (who was the one daddy wanted to run for President) all had a bad habit of publicly praising Hitler and the Third Reich. 2 Link to comment

a.d._510_n_ok
Bernie and Jane Sanders, under FBI investigation for bank fraud, hire lawyers Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and his wife, Jane Sanders have hired prominent defense attorneys amid an FBI investigation into a loan Jane Sanders obtained to expand Burlington College while she was its president, CBS News confirms. Politico Magazine first reported the Sanders had hired lawyers to defend them in the probe. Sanders' top adviser Jeff Weaver told CBS News the couple has sought legal protection over federal agents' allegations from a January 2016 complaint accusing then-President of Burlington College, Ms. Sanders, of distorting donor levels in a 2010 loan application for $10 million from People's United Bank to purchase 33 acres of land for the institution. According to Politico, prosecutors might also be looking into allegations that Sen. Sanders' office inappropriately urged the bank to approve the loan. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/bernie-and-jane-sanders-under-fbi-investigation-for-bank-fraud-hire-lawyers/ 2 Link to comment
