Josh K.
Off to the shop for some spacers then to the wrecking yard to pillage another VW Golf Quote Link to comment
INDY510
modifly the sheet metal to get more travel? seriously with the camber corrected and flares that would look fucking bad ass I don't want it lower, nor do I want to modify the sheetmetal. I just want it to look the best it can. I guess I should just go get a fender to cut up tomorrow and do a mock up. I'll also make some washers to use as spacers so I can get the wheel out flush as possible. Stay tuned! You can't lower it any more ..... .. I cut into the body to get another 1/2" of control arm travel .. . .. but the coilovers don't go that low anyways ... as far as washers for spacers .. . . .you can only fit about a 3/8" spacer on the rear until the lug nuts won't fit Quote Link to comment

hobbes_the_cat
It's almost back I had one 5 star vote..... Your welcome;). I would have never taken on a project this big, and your making killer progress! lookin forward to those VW flares on all 4 corners. 1 Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Thanks Jeff! I just got back with another fender, gonna go fit it up right now. This fender is off a 87 Rabbit. It has less body lines to contend with. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Well I couldn't be happier with the fit. These flares don't have a full arc like the Jetta flares on the front. These actually flatten out in the center and the profile rolls out much nicer. I settled on a 1/2" spacer for mock-up. Still gotta roll the lips in to get enough clearance. No biggie I'll let the pics speak for themselves. The camber looks a little crazy in this pic. It's not this bad Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
I like those fender flares! Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Here's the difference between the flares. Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
I like the boxyness of the Jetta? flare more... the tan one. But I like the over all fit of the cabrio fender. Quote Link to comment
fuzz's '71 510
Holy shit!! it looks like it was made to fit with the red fender!!     Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Thanks guys. Here's the rest of the pics from today. Tracing some lines so I could cut the quarter and also so I could hammer some body lines into the flare. Cut the profile. Traced and cut the quarter. Quarter panel off and checking the fit. Flare bolted on and all hammered out. Pretty much done, still have some finish hammering and welding. I will probably bond this to the quarter eventually. Overall I couldn't be happier with how it turned out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote Link to comment
Twodoordime
GAHH this thread makes me mad that i dont have the motivation to do this myself, or a garage.. Awesome man just awesome! are those rota grids? whats the specs on those? Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Thanks! Here's my wheels http://www.racinglab...lassic-006.html I took some more pics that show the fitment much better. 2 Quote Link to comment
fuzz's '71 510
Are you going to weld these on and then mud them or....? Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
I'll probably use a panel bonding adhesive and then mud them on. Since the flare is underneath the quarter panel this will be easy Quote Link to comment
Twodoordime
Ok I'm redoing the flares on my rat car, this simply looks too killer and so much less filler to blend them in then my flares. I have a feeling this 510 is going to be one sexy car...hell it looks good as is lol Quote Link to comment
fisch
Nice work here josh! Looks fantastic. I imagine many more will be going down this path soon. I am not sure what it costs for vw fenders, but I imagine it can't be much worse than a set of zg flares, and much more sophisticated looking. Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
If I haven't said it already....Thank You for taking so many pics!!! I know just how time consuming it is to include so many pics in a build thread! You're making it look so easy!!! Awesome work!! Quote Link to comment

The hardest part of the whole process is getting them off the car at the wrecking yard! During fitment I had to slit and hammer out the body lines, no big deal. If I haven't said it already....Thank You for taking so many pics!!! I know just how time consuming it is to include so many pics in a build thread! You're making it look so easy!!! Awesome work!! Your very welcome. I'm trying to create a good photo diary of the process. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Back at it! I'm waiting for the passenger "trailer fender" to get here or else I would get that side to the same place as the driver side. Today I started by making a template for the lower section. Then finished welding the two wheel well halves and tracing a template for the passenger side. Then back on so I can weld it to the damn car!! Now I have to make a flange for the face...... Then bridge the gap between the rocker and the wheel well I gotta say this is a ton of work! Definitely takes dedication! Quote Link to comment
