Josh K.
Those flares look SO much better!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks! The only metal flares I could find on a 510 was the one on ozdat with the GTV flares. Had to take a chance with the Golf flares and I'm glad I did! It looks really good man, great cut work on the fenders. Will you bolt them in or flush it with bondo? For the front I will cut the flares, cut the same profile out of the front fenders leaving a 1/16" gap between the two. The I'll use the extra Golf material to cut strips. I'll then weld the strips to the inside of the 510 fenders, drill spot weld holes in the flares then clamp them to the strips, then weld it up. When ready for undercoat I'll seam seal the inside seams. For the rear I have like a 2-3" gap in the back where they clearanced for the bubble flares. What I'm gonna do is use some 1/16" steel flat bar and make a ring/face that goes around the whole wheel opening but set back from the body lines the thickness of the sheet metal. I'll then cut the flare large and fit/shape it to the opening. Then mark and trim the flat bar to match the flare opening/weld everything up. This will reinforce the flare and use minimum filler/ match up the body lines It's gonna be a lot of work but worth it in the end! Hey Jeff, you got any front fenders you wanna part with? Josh K.
great cut work on the fenders. Free hand with a hand grinder/cutoff wheel Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Free hand with a hand grinder/cutoff wheel It took me a long time to be able to cut with a free hand cut wheel, I'm still far from the best but when I measure it out and take my time it always comes out ok Quote Link to comment
Duke
Just to give you an idea of how they will look when finished here is a build thread from a guy who put them on a 4 door: http://www.the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=837&start=90 Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Thanks Duke! Definitely a different look then I'm going for but nice to actually see someone using these flares! Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
I just ordered a Toyo R1R in 225/45-15..... Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Thanks to hobbes_the_cat (Jeff) I got some fenders and a hood. Quick mock up of the front flares with wheel (no spacer). I really like the fit. You can see the pic where the flare will mate right up with the factory flare (wheel arch). The rear is looking like BONDO CITY!!! Gonna be one hell of a battle to get it looking good especially since I have done ZERO body work in my life...... I'll probably run at least a 1/4" spacer in the front but need to mount my 225/45-15 R1R (it's waiting for me at the shop) Here's the oics http://community.ratsun.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif Edited July 20, 2022 by Josh K. 1 Quote Link to comment
DottiBlue
So much for a car you can drive and work on. Everything you have done looks great. Nice machine work. Keep up the good work. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Yeah that was a pipe dream..... It was just much easier to tear the whole car apart and do it at once..... Thanks for the props!! Josh- Quote Link to comment
DottiBlue
I understand that. I bought a dime that I was just gonna rebuild the l16 in and drive the way it was and then slowly do work to. Well the slowly do work to is holding true, but I'm getting closer to finishing the KA24e swap and everything else. Your definitely making much faster progress. Quote Link to comment
hobbes_the_cat
Man those flares are going to look good!!! WAY better that what was on there. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Thanks Jeff! and thanks for the parts! Here's my progress today.... Note the Toyo R1R 225/45-15 is now on and alot flusher. It's straight bad ass! I'm currently working to get the other side to this stage and then I'll do all the finish fitting/welding to both at once. Edited July 20, 2022 by Josh K. Quote Link to comment

Josh K.
Got the flares on and welded, started smoothing out the welds tonight. Still lots of work to be done on the fenders. Left side (first one) is f'ing perfect! The right one I'll have to live with even though I'm not happy with it. It's not a show car and I'm not a body man so i have to move on..... I'm pretty happy though http://community.ratsun.net/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif Edited July 20, 2022 by Josh K. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Started on the driver side rear today.....What a mess!! My back is gonna be sore tomorrow! Next thing to do is cutout the inner wheel well and start shrinking/massaging the panel back straight, make a sheet metal ring to fill the gap to the new flares, attach the flares, make a new inner wheel well and then bondo/smooth it all out http://community.ratsun.net/public/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif Edited July 20, 2022 by Josh K. Josh K.
Farther down the rabbit hole!!!! The driver side rear corner is hammered along with the trunk seal area and both sides around the side markers...... The bottom trunk panel is actually buckled from the impact, you can see the red area. This is where I'll cut in the parts car. Off to the parts car! I'm gonna cut the rear quarters at the middle of the wheel arch and around the back light panel at the lower seem. Not really excited about it but better now then later! http://community.ratsun.net/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif I'll also cutout the spare tire area and replace the riveted panel in mine. I have to cut around the cancer in my parts car or else I would just cut the hole backend off! Edited July 20, 2022 by Josh K. Quote Link to comment

Thank you sir! Been real busy at work and haven't gotten a whole lot done. Today I got the parts car rear end stripped and a coat of paint to keep the rust off. I'm still stripping my Project car in the area I'm cutting, I'll make templates of where I want to cut and hopefully get everything cut this weekend..... I'm cutting where the black paint is. And a shot of my 720 http://community.ratsun.net/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif Edited July 20, 2022 by Josh K. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Those flares are sweet. So much better looking than the bre/bubble flares! Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Thanks Matt. Here's a few more pics from today. Got the right side all stripped. Someone put ALOT of heat into these panels when installing the flares... Just trying to keep the forward momentum..... Edited July 20, 2022 by Josh K. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
So I started hacking the rear end up. Today I decided it would be easier to cut the whole backend off from the front side of the spare tire and re-mate at the body seams. I think it will be easier to line everything up and less welding in the end, just need to clean up some rust spots and weld in a patch panel. I'm considering having the whole tail secion from the donor car sand blasted before welding on. I made a template and started on the car today. Tomorrow will be more productive.... Template. Driver side cut off. Edited July 20, 2022 by Josh K. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Got more cutting done. Still need to finish cutting and grinding the front section to the factory seams. Then I have to cutout the hacked up, hammered wheel wells... Maybe I should remove the exhaust now? http://community.ratsun.net/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif Edited July 20, 2022 by Josh K. Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Wow this is some major work. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Wow this is some major work. Not really, just make sure you know what your going for. By cutting the whole ass end off I can mate the whole trunk pan to the body seams and keep everything nice and square.I'm actually dreading re-doing the wheel wells, flares and rocker panels more..... 1 Quote Link to comment
INDY510
. Cool man..... ... . keep posting lots of pics... . . I need to replace a quarter panel on my 2 door ... and it's cool to see how the inner structure is held together it looks like you didn't remove much structural integrity,, ,, , and it might be easier to do mini-tubs now and figure out bracing for the front of the wheel wells If you mock up the rear control arms you can check for tire clearance ,, , I had to cut alot of the quarter panel bracing at the center/top of the wheel well Quote Link to comment
