Josh K.
Decide to replace the whole front rocker and part of the rear. Here's the donor rocker. had to do a little hammer work on it after this pic, I'll also replace the really damaged front flange section. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Pretty quiet around here lately... Did everyone leave Ratsun? Finished for the day. I gave it my best! I had to cut out a damaged section. Just gotta make a patch. Weld in new front fender mount boss. Cutout and patch a section of rust in the far back lower section of the original rocker. Then fit the quarter.... Quote Link to comment
DottiBlue
Wow, everytime i look at your build, I'm amazed at the crazy amount of work your putting into this car. Pretty sure must woukd have just scrapped it. It's looking good though! Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Thanks for the props. I only spend around 4-8hr's per week working on it so the progress is a little slow plus I'm not a very motivated person... Pretty sure must would have just scrapped it. I think most would've just driven it like it was I definitely wasn't looking to go this far but I really had no choice. It's good though, atleast now I will have nice panels with little filler and every nook and cranny will be rust proof. This is more of a way for me to expand my knowledge of body work and the restoration process. I just try not to get overwhelmed Quote Link to comment
DottiBlue
Your definitely more motivated than me with mine, going on 4 years now. Just started this week for the first time, sorta. Hopefully will be driving by the end of the year. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Been busy. Finally got some work done. Started with the patch panel. Then rust encapsulated the inside and finisher her off! I'm definitely a rookie when it comes to this stuff..... It's not a corvette and it will be waaay better then when I started! Car is back on the ground. Gonna fit the passenger quarter, order material for the wheel tubs, start cleaning up and fitting the trunk pan.... Quote Link to comment
hobbes_the_cat
Keep it up man! Quote Link to comment
DAT510
NICE, your practically making a 510! what are those copper things that you have on the panels? are they there to hold the two pieces of metal together so you can spot weld them? Quote Link to comment
fuzz's '71 510
NICE, your practically making a 510! what are those copper things that you have on the panels? are they there to hold the two pieces of metal together so you can spot weld them? Welding klinkos, it helps when you have 2 holes in-line and these will keep them lined up while tack welding. Quote Link to comment
Ranman72
WOW!!!!!!! Thats alot of work I spent an hour reading your thread and feel like I need to go do somthing !!!! LOOKS GREAT!!!!! Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Thanks guys! They're actually called "clecos". You drill 1/8" hole through both panels, expand the clecos with the pliers, insert through hole, release pliers and the clecos sucks the two panels together. It's only for hanging panels "roughly", you still need to clamp with a better method, tack and hammer the panel tight. Quote Link to comment
DottiBlue
What happened to her that she became a donor? Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Front clip was pretty smashed up and rust was a little too much, all the body seams had cancer along with alot of the panels. I felt taken an almost rust free shell and using the good panels from "purple" would be best. It's a shame but one nice 510 is better then two crushed 510's.... Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Back at it! I started today stripping and pressure washing the trunk pan and tail light panel. I'm cutting the rusty section out of the donor panel and replacing it with the good section of the original panel. Here's a pic of the resto spill over area.... New pan (donor) Original I will section. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the trunk pan fit up and welded, the passenger quarter fit up along with the tail light panel and lower panel.... I might actually get the whole backend mocked up before I tear it all apart again I also ordered a 15"x10-3/4" wide trailer fender to start making the wheel wells. Quote Link to comment
tycot1
are you blasting these pieces along the way? Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
are you blasting these pieces along the way? Nope, just using paint stripper, pressure wash with soapy water, wipe clean with acetone then hit with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator. I was thinking of blasting the whole car before I start laying mud to make sure the residue is all gone. I assume that's what your getting at? Any tips would be appreciated. Your work speaks for itself! I'm just a wannabe.... Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
I had big plans for today.... Until the major wind storm knocked out power last night  I still managed to fight the wind and rain to get the parts all stripped and cleaned. I also drilled out and removed the trunk floor pan braces. I'm going to delete the outer wings that attach the trunk pan to the quarter panels. this just seems like a piss poor design. Here's some pics from today. I also managed to clean up most of the shop when I got my second wind. I would've gotten more done but I broke my custom made spot drill bit Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
vDecided to copy Merlin's idea for the wheel wells. This should give me plenty of wheel travel....... I have a lot to do before I can work on these anymore, I just wanted to get one so I could check the fit. Still gotta fit the rest of the sheet metal, this is the last phase before welding the flares on. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
I like how this fender has a 90DEG flange. It matches the radius perfectly. Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
Looks like a perfect fit! Quote Link to comment
datsuntech
I like how this fender has a 90DEG flange. It matches the radius perfectly. Are these trailer fenders? They look like ones we have at Princess Auto. Quote Link to comment

I am eager to see how you are going to blend them in. Brock Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Some pics as the day progresses..... Fitting the passenger quarter. Cut Just for fun...... Now I have to finish the trunk pan, clean up and fit the lower rear valance, clean up and fit the rear light panel and then check panel alignment and trunk lid gaps.... Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
So today I replaced the rusted section of the trunk pan (still gotta weld it). I also started straightening the rear light panel and lower valance. Everything is fitting up nicely and I also checked the trunk lid gap. Now everything comes apart again...... Atleast everything goes back together and looks really good, I was definitely nervous Quote Link to comment
