DanielC
My dad flew in B-24 during WWII. He was the navigator, in the plane in each group that had radar. He said he preferred the B-24 over the B-17, because it was slightly faster, and after dropping the bombs they could get out of there sooner. He did tell me of missions deep into eastern Germany, and the only option was to continue into Russia, refuel there, and fly back across Germany. In other missions, they flew out of Africa, with too much payload, (bombs) and too much fuel, and flew just above the ground, and then water, until somewhere over the Mediterranean sea, the plane was finally light enough to climb. ]2eDeYe
i've actually seen videos on how the frame of the airplane actually helps direct the lightning. basically (with boeing airplanes at least) the lightning can strike a wing and go out the other wing without exploding the gas inside the wings because the current runs along the frames and stuff. also, the controls (again, boeing airplanes) are still functional even with all of the old (i repeat OLD) technology that helps control. the computers, unless on auto pilot, only help direct and show flightpath and stuff. there's a lot of things that look like buttons that i think are actually fuses throughout the aircraft. and i know with the 747 at least there's a little prop that pops out the bottom of the wing to power hydraulics (i think) if there's an in air issue. The RAT (I see it's function has been posted), I've had to design tools around that thing on the 777 and your 6'5". Us tall folk are supposed to have a problem with heights, but some of us do. 1 Quote Link to comment

I was posting the picture to give an pic for what I was attempting to explain (horribly I might add) And yeah, I ain't like ba and planes. I can handle planes. It's roofs and shit like that where I can see mostly Quote Link to comment

Back then Hydraulic fluid was flammable. While the Liberator had farther range, speed & weight carrying capabilities due to the "Davis" wing, the B-17 could take much more of a pounding and still make it home.I read a study recently comparing all factors of the two planes and the B-17 comes out ahead do to less maintance issues, thus greater "availability" for missions. 2 Quote Link to comment

MikeRL411
The oddest plane I ever actually saw flying was a very much modfied B47. It was stationed at Los Angeles International Airport [would I lie?] while North American Aircraft was developing the B1 bomber. NAA grafted the early design nose of the B1 on to a B47 so that they could flight test software and preliminary cockpit layout. You should have seen and heard the ["WTF?s"] seeeing that strange pointy nosed B47 taking up position with the regular civilian takeoff line generated. Quote Link to comment
