datsun trucks and powerful engines

Recommended Posts

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhi

i just got myself an FJ20ET, and i dont want to put it in my 620 despite how easy it would be to do it legally in australia

but

out of interest, if you own an SR or FJ or CA or rotor or VG or otherwise powerful engine (lets say 250hp+) and it powers your 320, 520, 620, 720, or D21;

how do you find it? good straight line i'd imagine but how do you manage it with the simple brakes and steering you've got? ive owned a powerful car before but it was a lateish mode monocoque car with good suspension design so it wasnt a problem. im just wondering how it is when you're dealing with a fairly basic commercial chassis and all

thanks for any insight :D

Well if the center of gravity were lowered with a body drop and brake up grades added it should be alright. The truck has the advantage of having a frame for rigidity when tuning the suspension..

The problem I see, is that once you start making it faster, the quicker you go the faster you have to stop. On top of that, you need to corner. Engine swaps get expensive quick. Thats why I'm not in a hurry to do mine.

The trucks aren't designed for that kind of abuse, so expect to be spending money once you start breaking it. And you will break it sometime.

I say do it though twofinger_salute.gif

Yeah I have a little l20b and I'll be using that once my car is ready for a motor install, I'll drive that motor as I upgrade brakes, I already have a full clover kit, once breaks are done I'll be lookin into a vg or rb series.

A lot of people just think you can place a big motor in their and call it good... Tell they have to stop or turn...

The 620 pickup was designed to handle loads, thus a high horsepower engine will be fine, especially with a framed vehicle. Traction will be an issue, as will throttle steer due to most of the weight being up front. Basically similar to an El Camino, but it'll still probably handle better.

I say do it. Someone on here has the 327 in a 620, I remember he broke his diff, but that was after lots of loading and time. You may want to upgrade the axle depending on how much power you're planning on getting out of the FJ. But unless it's beyond 300 hp, you probably won't have to worry. You will want a limited slip though. One tire friers suck in pickups with lots of power.

Watch out in the rain. Even with my meager KA powered D21, I hit rain and the ass end would be sideways everywhere.

i guess power is power, but the surge of boost (even if its just to the tune of 200ish hp) is what im a bit cagey over. id be a lot more comfortable NA, just for example say out of a VG or SBC or something

im comfortable with the idea of power in cars like 510's cos of IRS and a chassis made for handling, i can also get/fit all sorts of nice brakes and suspension and braces to help keep it all stable and predictable so it can be fun :D

this doesnt apply at all to a 620 though, without serious frame mods (hard to get legal here in aus) i have to work with torsion beams and leaf suspension, but more important than that - the steering. mines probably just worn but its reasonably vague and not too confidence inspiring, which if it was a straight line rocket i wouldnt really care but it'll be driven every day. brakes might not be so bad though, im sure there'd be something suitable from later nissans

i could just be making a mountain of a molehill out of this, trying to talk myself out of it and all  good advice though chaps, thanks :)

Fucking hate laptops sometimes, just erased everything I wrote because I hit the gd touch pad in some odd manner.

Anyway, torsion bar and leaf springs can still be made to handle quite well. You can get 30% stiffer bars from either Nismo or www.4x4parts.com out of Florida. As far as steering, put in a rack and pinion. That's the next plan for the 510, I'm tired of steering boxes. The 210 box I was planning to rebuild is still sitting apart in the garage.

What kind of car-nazi things do they have in AU about legality? Seems to me you should be able to put struts or whatever on your truck and no one's going to know it wasn't factory right? Least of all any governing bodies. Or is it like California down there?

similar to cali, yeah :D

i could stay outside of the law by registering the car stock, then once thats done i could do whatever i want to it basically, but only until i get pulled over and defected (can be for anything, even low water level in washer bottle/bag). during inspection they'd notice other stuff and ask questions, engine number wouldnt match their records if FJ went in for example. they'd then be able to cancel the registration if i dont get it fixed before a certain time, then the car is on the road illegally so basically off the road. also if the car is insured and i want to claim for whatever reason, if they find the numbers dont match they can void the claim - given insurance companies do EVERYTHING they can to get out of claims, there a good chance they'll figure that one out

i could stay within the law, which would mean if i wanted an engine swap ill need to visit a consulting engineer and pay him $700 or so clams to advise and then sign off what i've done once i do it. we need to stick to EPA/smog reg's too, its easier for pre ADR commercial vehicles though. no aftermarket engine management as that ends out altering the precious state of tune that passed emissions years ago (bullshit but thats what they want). for frame mods it needs to go through an engineer also, but given its a full chassis its not that bad, but its still a further expense. once that's all written up and done, i then take it to road authority with a roadworthy cert and pay for rego and then its all legal. i can insure it without worrying also. the annoying thing is you can still be defected for things that were engineered, you still need to go to the inspection but with the engineer paperwork you get by

its based on hysterical mothers groups thinking every car with a slightly louder exhaust will kill and maim their children without warning. they base their stupidity on the one sensationalised media report they see per year spurred by some underage drunk kid wrapping his dads falcon around a powerpole with a carload of his mates, as you see that suggests 'hoon' activity allegedly kills billions of children and kittens every week, and so the dickheads then go and push for bigger fines, higher penalites and more and more government prying to, 'keep their kids safe'. they then complain this state is a "nanny state" and wonder where it all went wrong

similar deal to all our speed cameras, there to protect australia cos speed is the number one killer (speed is always a factor! if they werent moving theyd never have crashed ). never mind the fact drivers are getting worse and dont know road rules and etiquette, nor what to do in bad weather or how to control a car if the tail steps out a little. nor that our roads arent quite as good as they should be, nor that our infrastructure is shit, nor that with ESP and ABS and TRC people are taught to not know how to drive... its definately speeding that's the problem. while they reap millions every year from speed camera fines

noone really understands what theyre doing, not the people complaining about 'hoons' (a term that can accurately describe EVERY driver on the road right now, so as you can imagine there's a hoon epidemic right now :\). the government gets it though, its just a nice excuse to keep taxing and restricting people. just like you guys and "homeland security"

wonderful isnt it :D

For one, I love Australian dialect, but what the hell does "hoon" mean? :)

For two, yes. You're dead on about everything. Self righteous mother groups (think MADD in the states) turning everyone into criminals all under the guise of "saving the children". Thanks to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) peoples' lives are being destroyed due to shitty science, abolishment of Constitutional rights (try refusing a DUI test on the grounds it's an "illegal search"; you'll get arrested on the spot), and shit "save the children" politics. Then Homeland Sekurrahdy is getting ready to public it's own line of fetish x-ray porn, against, under the guise of "saving the children/nation".

Sadly i dont think there is any "legislative" way out of the mess they've gotten us all into. THe greed is absolutely immeasurable... Revolution if we all wise up as a group, or submission if our complacency and ignorance gets the better of us =(
