MikeRL411 Posted October 19, 2015 Report Share Posted October 19, 2015 Made the trip from Da Nang to Phu Bai, many times with fuel and other supplies. 1972 The "almost stupidest thing" I ever did was at Phu Bai in 1962! 5 of us noticed that the ARVN Guard Post on the South East corner of the MACV encampment was very silent. Being stupid we walked over. The "vigilant" guards were sound asleep! We started to steal their Browning M2 ,50 cal Machine Gun but thought it through, They had sidearms and we would probably make enough noise to wake them up. We settled for opening the M2 and stealing their ammo box. We brought it to the aformentioned dumbasss LTC and invited him and his ARVN Captain to explain why we found the full belted magazine from their valiant and alert guard team on his "Leave your weapons here" table! Why did they do it there? To rub the Chicom noses in it. By the way, I watched my room get destroyed on the US evening news during the Tet uprising. The US Marines were under fire from "my" room, tossed a grenade through the window and followed up by kicking in the back entrance to the hotel, kicked in my room door and finished off with a flame thrower.
