The Moisin Nagant design might have be a tad old, but when built by the TULA arsenal, properly assembled, headspaced and equipped with a good scope sight they were superbly accurate, as many a dead Nazi at Stalingrad can attest to.

By the way these cuties are violating a basic firearms precept!  The bolts SHOULD be open!

The only time my rifle was not (momentarily) locked and loaded in The Viet Nam conflict was when the clip was empty

At which time I am sure you were not posing for a publicity shot.

I was temporarly assigned to an unnamed detachment at Phu Bai [not MACV] in 1962.  At the MACV dining hall in Phu Bai a Lieutenant from an allied detachment made the trip from Danang via Monkey Mountain to Phu Bai.  The witless LTC in charge insisted that all weapons be left on an unguarded table in front of the Mess Hall.  My LT buddy said the following to the LTC.  "Sir!  We have just driven from Danang via Monkey Mountain!  If you would care to check the barrel of my 12 gauge shotgun, you will find it is still warm!  It is not warm from the Sun,  We shot our way here!  I will not leave my weapons ungarded!  I will sit here with my weapons in my hands while my driver eats his meal.  Then we will switch positions.  Sir, in case you don't know, there's a fucking war going on out there!"

The mosin has an 11lb trigger pull for this reason, you have have a chambered round and Ivan can drop it off the back of the t34 he's riding on and it won't discharge.
