Being a socialist, food stamp collecting, financial aid receiving student that grew up on AFDC and enjoys driving on properly lit and paved roads that are well governed by police... I kinda don't mind paying taxes. I'm sure that's not the popular opinion amongst the ratty folks though.

Not sure if you're serious or just trolling, laotsu.  Doesn't matter I guess.  Sometimes it's just depressing as someone who saves money, runs a tight budget (yeah, actually has and uses a budget), drives old vehicles, carries zero debt, gives away a decent percentage of income, and even increased tax withholdings all last year while taking zero deductions.  Meanwhile, our roads suck and our police are incompetent douchebags and the federal government wastes money uncontrollably.  Not to mention the section 8 tenants next door driving nicer vehicles, buying smart phones and nice clothes, and popping out anchor babies for free while paying little to no taxes.  Hell, I use a refurbished flip phone on a $12/month plan so I can save money to give to the government.

1971 was the last great summer. Everything has been down hill since then. The end of the muscle car era, lower compression motors, end of $5 a barrel oil, end/loss of the Vietnam war in sight, Nixon, WallMart first sold publicly on NYSE, US continental oil production peaks and begins to drop.

Such a drop doesn't happen overnight and is hard to see spread over 40 years. Energy is everything. With enough cheap available energy you can have anything you want and be rid of anything you don't want. Population growth follows the amount of easy energy available to feed and house a family. I remember $0.32 an imperial gall for gas. That's 26 cents US which was probably much lower than Canada anyway.

Unfortunately thats true....

Our country is a festering stinkn pit. Laotsu's first post actually outlined the problem.

He once needed Government assistance, now doesnt and thus doesnt mind paying taxes. That is how the system honestly should work. People should be excited about april 15th, not hateful towards it.

But the facts are that what thisismatt said is more accurate to the way the system works today.

and instead of when april 15th comes around everyone getting excited to be an American, getting excited to pay for the system that honors the fruits of their labor, getting excited to be able to have a country so great that its citizens pay for the government themselves and then vote to run it correctly, instead of all that we hate paying money to the government, and for good reason.

They waste it, they waste so much money its unfathomable, We are not represented by our elected officials, we dont essentially pay for our government anymore, we pay the bill left in their wake, after the fact. And the local services and roads generally dont get better, and our infrastructure never gets improved. The education system gets worse, people get stupider, and the country fails. And thats why we hate paying taxes.

If our country ran right, I would gladly fork over money, hell I would pay double the taxes we pay to have a country that really truly works. But we get our taxes raised, and the country works worse and worse by the year.

yeah I sure as HELL don't want to spend a quarter of my income on Halliburton's "losing" Billions in Iraq, nor am I happy with our current obstructionist congress. I do feel that "love it or leave it" is the silliest thing to be said in response to dissatisfaction with our current conditions.
