Speedymaru
Hello everyone, just thought I'd introduce myself/my new Datsun. I just picked up my 1978 620 king cab. It has the 4 speed tranny in it. I saw the ad on Craigslist about a month ago, went and looked at it, and made a down payment on it. I didn't have the full amount of money at the time. A week or so later I had the rest of the money and went to pick it up. I gave the guy the money, and it fired right up. I went to drive it away and it had no power. It would not accelerate at all. I had my foot all the way to the floor and it just wouldn't do anything. It would rev up fine in neutral or with the clutch in, just wouldn't accelerate. I left the truck at the guys shop, and he said he knew it was the carb and would try to fix it. He was not able to fix the carb and said he'd have to buy a Weber carb for it. He did that, as well as install a new clutch, clutch slave cylinder, flush the brakes, clean out the gas tank, and steam clean the bottom side of the truck. I just got to pick it up today. I drove it home and it ran great. I got it up to 55 or so and it just putted right along. The only issue I had was the carb would backfire a little bit if I shifted too early. And the brakes weren't the best, but that's to be expected. Not sure if there's anything I can do to make them a little better or not. I have new wheels and tires for it. I plan on leaving it mostly stock, besides a 2 inch drop, and a sound system. I'm not planning on doing much to the motor. I would add pictures, but I'm not sure how to. If anyone could tell me how to that would be great 3 Quote Link to comment

racerx
Are u sure it was backfiring from carb? If that's a new weber carb, it should be okay. I would check your timing. 1 Quote Link to comment

distributorguy
The float height and float drop needs to be adjusted on a new Weber!!!!!!! You can find instructions online if you dig around a little. Its likely running too rich because of a high float. 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
I've had the 32.36 new weber on about 5 cars and never had to adjust the float, a few times I had to adjust the idle, hardly idle mixture either, later on yes but not new. 1 Quote Link to comment
distributorguy
They all need it. What you don't know is how it will run once it IS adjusted. Then again, they come into CA, then get shipped 5 days UPS to MN, so we probably have it worse, but yours still had to go from China to Italy to CA. Bouncing in a box with nothing supporting the fragile little brass tab on the float. 2 Quote Link to comment
Speedymaru
I'll be using it as my daily driver. And yes, I'm definitely going to buff the paint. I'm not totally sure it was backfiring from the carb. It sounded like it. It would lose power when it did it. I'm sure I'll have to adjust the timing too. It very easily could be that. I'll look into all that. I noticed there was a pinned thread that went over Weber carb adjusting, and I was planning on going through that procedure. It's in decent condition. It has a few blemishes here and there, but nothing too bad. The grill has a small chunk taken out of it, its missing the door lock cylinder on the drivers side, the paint has a few issues, but other than that it's a solid little truck. I have a new set of wheels and tires to put on it and will be posting pictures once I get them on 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
If it does this when it's cold the choke may not be hooked up. Fill out your profile with a city you are near. 1 Quote Link to comment

Speedymaru
I have the stock wheels, and will keep them. I got the new wheels because they are wider and I like how they fill in the wheelbay better. I may eventually switch back to the stock wheels. I will be lowering it 2 inches soon. I believe the choke is working. Thanks to the help of a member on this site, I've determined that there is a vacuum leak. I will be fixing that soon. I updated my profile. 2 Quote Link to comment

Speedymaru
I was planning on just doing a 2 inch drop in the rear, because I don't want to be bottoming out on everything. I was going to just lower the front until it looks right. At the moment, the front looks to be a little bit higher than the rear so it would most likely end up being slightly more than 2 inches. And thank you! 1 Quote Link to comment

Speedymaru
Little update: got the vacuum leak taken care of. I bought gasket material and made my own gaskets, and found out the adapter plate needed to be ground back more to clear another piece of metal. Got it all put back together, and now I just need to take it for a test drive. Will be ordering the lowering kit soon. I'm planning on taking out the smog stuff. What needs to stay? What needs to be plugged up? I just want to clean up the engine bay and reduce dead-weight Quote Link to comment
Speedymaru
I'm going to replace my side mirrors. I'm trying to decide where to put the new ones. I ordered a set already. Any opinions on door mirrors vs fender mirrors for my truck? Quote Link to comment
