Quick Guide to reading early Datsun Parts Numbers

The Datsun Part number is very useful after you learn to read it.
Some of the early parts manuals contained an elaborate explanation.
Here it is in brief. This number scheme was used up to the late 60s.
and is very helpful for the older Datsuns we have.

The Part # is 10 digits, SSFFF-TTTDD, with these odd titles.
SS is called Section.
FFF is called Proper NO.
TTT is called Part Type.
DD is called Distinction.

SS is the number for a group of parts. For example #21 for the cooling system.

FFF is the number for a collection of similar parts within the Section.
For example #400 is for Radiator parts within Section 21.

TTT is the number that identifies the vehicle that this part originated with.
For example #087 is for the 320 truck. If you have a 320 part
with a Type other than #087 it means the part is from another Datsun but used on the 320.
For example #094 is for the Bluebird 312 Sedan which shares parts with the 320 truck.
This number is most useful for identifying interchangeable parts.

DD is the number for further refinement of the part to designate changes, kits etc
but I have never seen a table that relates the numbers to a description.

The TTT number and model of Datsun it identifies is included in all parts manuals.
The SS and FFF numbers are in most all of the parts manuals.
The explanation of all this is only in some of the early manuals.

Here is how the part number for the 320 round front signal lens/chrome ring reads.
26121-09401.
26 is "electric section #5"
121 is "Lamps #1 Outside"
094 is the number for the 62/63 Bluebird 312 sedan.
01 indicates a "Parallel, changed or service" part, but which is not defined.

I figured this is maybe the best place to post this so 320 owners would probably see it. I know there's a Craigslist/Ebay thread, but I seldom visit it.

Hello,

Looks like I am going to have to do a fake rebuild on my L320 pickup. E1 engine.
Trying to amass the parts. I will need the following:

Valve guide seals
Timing gears (have the chain)
Timing chain cover gasket/seal
Piston rings (probably standard)
All other seals I’m not remembering
Connecting rod bearings (size TBD)

Sure I am not thinking about a bunch.

Any leads would be appreciated.

Thx

I'm guessing it's going to be a combination of MG parts and Nissan J engine parts. For starters I suggest buying and MG head gasket because it's higher quality and hasn't been sitting on a shelf for 30 years, and the J15 set for all the other gaskets.

Here's the head gasket:

I wonder if the rings, bearings and other internals will work. Sure, the Nissan engines are very close, but there are minute differences on other parts of the engines, places where it doesn't matter so much. Rings, bearings and timing gears matter a whole lot.

Buy a single rod and main bearing and do a test fit before ordering up a batch of parts.

Re doing the rear wheel bearings on my '65 320.

National brand part #s are:
Inner seal:223542
Outer seal: 1977
Bearing: 30208

I couldn't find the info anywhere, and of-course the OG #s don't cross over. So, figured I'd post it here for the next guy.

Cheers fellas!

Hey everyone, this is the closest thread I could find to my question so be kind or simply direct me if its been covered many times already but, .....320 E1 internals for a rebuild. (I.E. bearings, pistons, rings, you all know). Do these things exist? Is everyone just using MG stuff? I have a buddy wanting to rebuild his E1 AND I will eventually need this info as well. Ive already been down the road of interchangeability with J series gaskets and used Mg stuff but wasnt sure if there was a rebuild kit on the market for E1. Any help I will pass along, Thanks all!🍻

There are some online threads with crossovers for parts in that range of engines.  I got my pistons from ebay.  You will need to get your engine apart, before you know what sizes you need for pistons and bearings.

There is also a vendor in northern california who does complet rocker rack restoration for a couple hundred dollars

ROCKER ARMS UNLIMITED

Here is a link to the internet archive of the parts crossover (make sure to scroll down):

Some limited stuff is available from forklift shops.

There is some real specific notes on the valve guide seals.  You can use modern ones for the intake, but the exhausts have to have the lose old style, which passes a bit more oil
