mine was a 1968 f250 4x4 with a 360 that had a dead cylinder, oil soaked brake shoes and only the right rear would even attempt to slow it down. It also had this reentering the atmosphere type of shake if you went past 50mph. Four, bald and rotten bias mud tires. It had power steering at one point, but the pump took a shit, so my answer to that was just to take the belt off. No seat belts and all in a region where it rains like 300 days a year. The tires were so bad and hard that I often had to put it in four wheel drive to get up the hill to my home......and it was paved.

 

That pile really made me a pretty decent driver once I got into something that would stop and turn. Driving that at 40 was about the same as a good car at 100.

I remember the first time I even saw a scout. My immediate family were Ford people (for whatever reason) and my Father had a bronco that he bought new in 1970. My family bought mostly off-road capable stuff and it would be just beat until it could be beat no more. I'm thinking it was around 76 and there was this nasty powerline  hill about 10 miles from our house, that for fun, my Father and uncles would make runs at to see who could get closest to the top. Dad's bronco would only get so far and the front end would start to get wheel hop so badly that you just had to lift. 

 

Enter my Mother's first cousin Harry (fitting name btw). He went against the grain and bought himself a new scout. It was sort of a metallic pea green. Harry, was the first one to the top of the hill, not just a high mark, but went over the top....One fucking try. That sort of thing really sticks in a little boys memory.

 

Later on in life, I found that same hill to really be a bit on the lame side, as I could drive right up it in a Baja bug without even trying hard, but it was cool at the time.

I've seen guys go places in a Baja bug that built jeeps couldn't go, and it was usually a large hill, hell me and a buddy of mine took a 3 wheeled golf cart up a trail and had to go around 4x4 quad that was stuck. :lol:

I notice that so many 4x4 guys have like no clue where a bug will go. With a good driver, they will shock the hell out of you. There are of course limits, but still crazy. What I really like is the speed you can to it at without losing your fillings.

John Jr. was the master mechanic in my hood and he drove a 59 Ford 4X4 we called the brick. It had the original red paint that had oxidized to a mean ass mat color. Lifted about a foot, solid ball joint front axle with locked dif, 460 opened to 490, real aluminum cobra jet heads, dual carb mani, and an RV cam. The thing was a torque hoar that could spin all four tires. If I ever get the urge for an off road vehicle, I will recreate John's. As a kid, that was the end all be all.

I know we're off topic but I love hearing about the crazy things we did to our first rides. Mine was a stock beat 65 Nova I bought for $250 (2dr hardtop 6cyl auto). I had no money but wanted it to have a rake so I cut the front coils with a torch. Then I bought two 14" slotted mags for the rear for $5 each. They wouldn't clear the Nova's low rear wheel arches so my Dad lengthened the rear shackles (no money for Hijacker air shocks). With the front lowered and the rear jacked up the bench seat back was straight up and down with no adjustment so I had to put a 2x4 wood block under the front seat mounts.

Dude, I;ve been doing a lot of reading/lurking on this forum and you have an amazing way with words at times.  This had me chortling good on a conference call with work, so much so that I had to mute myself.

It's funny how many people are biased toward police. A lot of them have never once had a confrontation with the police, but because their friends dads cousins brother-in-law that knows a guy, got, let's say a ticket for being too low, then this person with no history of police contact, suddenly hates the police, thinks they're pigs, wishes they would leave them alone, and calls them names when someone else is being confronted for a legitimate reason. If you don't give police a reason to pull you over, they generally won't. In a 33 minute video, I saw one car being towed, one attempted to be towed, and several being issued citations, all for things that can pose a problem. If people behaved themselves and didn't do stupid things, they'd pass by with no problems.

Oh yeah, because the police have neeeeeeeeeeever been out of line nor overstepped their boundries, all while knowing every single law/ordinance/rule and executing enforcement perfectly. Lololol... right you are, so very funny that is.

 

No bias here, because I have plenty of first hand experience. Just driving along in my automobile, minding my own business while following all laws when a traffic cop has nothing better to do than to find an excuse to pull me over.  "You were driving kinda close to one side of the lane there." "It looked like you were going a bit fast/slow."  and on and on.  I know the difference of when I was doing something stupid to get pulled over, and when they're profiling or just have nothing better to do, because I've also been ticketed for doing stupid and stupider things.

 

The latest excuse I've gotten is "You don't have a front plate."  Me, "I do."  Officer, "Show me." It's pouring rain and the wind is blowing fiercely while pulled over on the side of the interstate, so I turn on the heater and roll my windows back up, and put my sweater on while the officer looks annoyed as he has to wait for me.  He follows me to the front of the car, and I point to it, "There it is."  The officer doesn't say anything for a moment, looking over my car for something else to bitch about.  No ticket, just a waste of time.

 

 

Cops aren't all car enthusiasts, and a lot of them are car ignorant.  They'll see any modified car and profile it, as a "street racer" or "drug dealer", or maybe they'll see an old ratty vehicle and profile them as a "druggie/tweaker".  I'd like to be free to drive any car I choose, without being hasseled by police.  Safety issues of certain modifications I understand, I like to drive my car unlike the show posers, but the way it's been working here for inspections has been fine for the most part. No need for more government sanctioned revenuers who are car ignorant to work you over for more tax, which is exactly what's going on in Australia.  Even completely unmodfied cars have been ticketed by ridiculous ignorant policing there.

 

As for the video, like I said, those idiots' behavior is attracting the cops.  Of course there are plenty more reports of incidents than just in that highlights video, they'll see one car doing stupid things and assume the rest are like that as well and it will get worse and worse.

 

So your solution is let's just all "behave" by never modifying our cars at all. Yep we'll only buy new cars since old ones are bad and people say the new ones are better for the environement.  We'll all cut our hair the same, and wear uniforms too, just so we don't get looked at by the police for being different.  Anyone who's not part of the crowd will be forced to conform, and when they don't they will be removed from society and incarcerated.  Seems that's the typical mindset thesedays.

Indeed.  My friend, who is a cop, has complained to me about being pulled over for no reason but just the kind of car he drove.  When he became an officer, I liked to give him shit about being stuck with traffic duty and he said he would do everything he can not to fall into that.  Fortunately he didn't get stuck with that, and fortunately for me too lol.

So why hasn't law enforcement created a personality factor test that identifies this calm type vs the prototypical ass hat? If human resource specialists are using this kind of test to find the right candidate for a middle management position at Wallmart, why in the hell not for finding the right personality to be a cop? Answer; The ass hat's are in charge.

there was a time where PD's never had to advertise they were hiring.There was always a stack of applications on file.Not anymore.In the early 80's if you asked a cop with 10-15 years on the force if he would "do it again"-3/4's of them would say NO. This is when LE really started swirling the bowl. Minorities would get hired with a test score of 80 where as white males would have to score 95 or better to get on.LE was forced to hire "what ever came down the road".ANd now we are paying the price.
