Racer X 69
That's when a car actually had a trunk that held more than a spare tire and a six pack. 3 Quote Link to comment
Racer X 69
Anyone else here remember traveling across the desert with one of those canvas bags hanging in front of the grille? Not one of the cars in this photo has them hanging correctly. The idea was that you fill them with cold water (and ice if you can get it), and place it on the grille directly in front of the radiator. As air passes by the bag it cools some, and the radiator gets airflow somewhat cooler than the desert air, reducing the likely hood of overheating and boil over. 2 Quote Link to comment

We had one of those (brand named Desert Bag") on our '53 Buick. Used to take 2-3 tries to get over Oregon Mountain,& down into Weaverville,CA. Those were the "Good Old Days",with NO A/C. 3 Quote Link to comment

difrangia
Yeah, Racer, the bag was rubber/flexible plastic lined canvas. You stop every so often and wet the canvas down and it cooled the water for drinking at road stops. Also had these door-mounted water coolers like on this Rambler to keep the tempers down in the cabin. 2 Quote Link to comment

And, if you removed the spare tire from its well, and removed the rubber drain plug you could fill the well with a case of canned beer and some chipped ice! 1 Quote Link to comment

I searched these a few years ago after seeing a pic like this. As the water that weeps through the canvas evaporates it pulls heat away from the bag cooling the water inside. When mounted in the air flow of the radiator it's like spraying a mist into it. Quote Link to comment
