r@+5un620
Alright, I am a broke ass married college kid and I am limited as to what I can do with my truck... As it is 35 miles away at the parents. I have done all body work needed to make the truck semi straight. All I'm lacking to get my rat on the road is a windshield. But I wanna get it all one color and I don't care what it looks like. I checked on some car paint and its out ta my price range but I noticed last time I visited the rents I have a huge box of near commercial grade duck tape. So I put one and one together and I'm liking this idea even more and more what you all think? The whole truck in duck tape? Comments suggestions? Quote Link to comment
DatWifey
 Please do this just so that we can see a photo of this shit. 1 Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Do it!!!!! Quote Link to comment
devilsbullet
i'm in agreement. and if the paint is bad enough that you're even considering doing this, may well be an improvement Quote Link to comment
hobbes_the_cat
My sister did this to her Mercury Tracer and even that piece of junk didn't deserve it. WORST IDEA EVER. It will be a huge pain to get the tape residue off when you do paint it for real. Spend the $5 on some Krylon and rattle can that baby. 1 Quote Link to comment
wayno
If the coating/primer/paint that is on it now will keep out water, then you should have no issues, if it is just normal primer, then forget it, unless that duct tape can/will keep the water out for sure, the duct tape will hold water in and it will rust faster. Primer does not inhibit rust unless it is a primer sealer, which most primers are not. Quote Link to comment

Tristin
It's interesting that you mention you don't care what it looks like... But you care what it looks like so you want to tape the whole car. Duct tape is the ugliest shit ever. Hobbes is right: it will be a giant pain to get all the residue off. I have seen an Evo completely covered in painters tape which looked decent. But that's not crappy duct tape and it peels off quick. Snatch up some Rustoleom and paint it that way. There's many guys out there rocking cheap paint jobs. If you're hurting for money so bad you're considering tape as a viable solution for a paint job, then maybe you need to hold off and save some more. Quote Link to comment
INDY510
Spend the $5 on some Krylon and rattle can that baby. That would make the duct tape look WAY better ... .. 1 Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
I'll have to put in my vote for no... The idea is cool but it doesn't stand up to uv rays that well and eventually would fall apart leaving residue that would not be fun to remove to paint it for real. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Duct tape is a bad idea .... but duck tape is waterproof Quote Link to comment

Zlich
go to lowes and buy some 99 cent spray cans. as long as your good at laying down some spray paint itll look nice my dad rattle caned his chevy truck bed trailer and people asked him how much he paid for it. just take your time. way better than throwing on some duck tape. its a cool idea but itll be ugly as hell and cost alot more than going out and buying a few cans of spray paint. r@+5un620
Thanks for the quick replies I'm thinking that the duck tape will make my life easier and cheap as possible. This idea seems better than the penny/gorilla glue idea my hs janitor had on his 80s stang or the bed liner paint job Quote Link to comment
r@+5un620
Lol Indy that's f'n hilarious I never thought about that... They do have packaging tape...haha Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Just get some rustoleum and roll it on. Duck tape is a bad idea. Quote Link to comment
r@+5un620
Lol this truck has been a hoot so far and it hasn't even been on the road yet. The funny thing was that I got it inspected without fenders and a plywood hood and it passed but my windshield was already cracked and I went to get insurance and they told me no they wouldn't insure it... Quote Link to comment
Tristin
You have to have your insurance company look at it before they insure it? I don't think the duct tape will help... Quote Link to comment
r@+5un620
Yup he said that it didnt meet their standards and had to have fenders at least and it has them now. all different colors and such Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Not duct tape or even duck tape (if there is a thing) won't last just look at trailers that have it on flapping in the breeze. Glue is impossible to get off. Duct tape is rattle can's retarted older brother. Quote Link to comment
r@+5un620
I think if I practice on laying the smooth edges I can get it to stay on longer. 1 Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Sounds like you need different insurance... Mine has never seen any of my cars. And duct tape will not help haha just put a quick spray paint job on there. Choose the color it has the most of and paint the rest of it that color. Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
Don't do it!! It sounds really interesting, but think of removing it all down the road and all the residue it leaves behind.. not to mention holding water, like everyone else mentioned. Last thing you want to do is speed up the cancer. Quote Link to comment
