Farmer Joe
never fear.. pictures are here.. getting started monday... single cam out.. takes about an hour to get it here.. twin cam in.. had to get a new pilot bushing, but that was it.. bolted right up.. used my thicker swap mounts on this one.. gonna pass the originals down hopefully.. also looks like i can use an s13 DE exhaust manifold too. they look like they dump in the same spot as the single cam manifold.. again, fingers crossed. theres a guy here local with a few for sale. gonna try and see if i can grab one from him before the weekend.. sooo, now i have to strip that intake so i can get it welded up on sunday night. i need to die grind the shit out of the plenum area and knife edge all the hard edges so it flows real nice. the exhaust manifold is the only thing really holding me up.. we'll see... more to come. 2 Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Looks good sitting in there. I ran a stock S13 manifold, fit great. Eagle Adam found a header that fits really well if you can't find a manifold, it's somewhere in his build thread. Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
see i dont think that the red truck has an s13 manifold on it.. fernando has this same one too.. this is an s14 manifold, and he has an s14 DE in his truck.. this one dumps right between the frame and the torsion bar like yours and nanos.. i need one like this.. the s13 piece.. im hoping this will just bolt right up to the exhaust i made.. ]2eDeYe
You might be right, what is the difference? They look very similar. Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
ones about a 8-10inches shorter. the long s14 one comes to a single hole exit thats like 2.5in.. the s13 type has the 2 hole exit like the D21 manifold. my exhaust goes over the frame, so i need that second one since its short like the hardbody one. Farmer Joe
okie dokie.. found a guy sorta local that has an s13 manifold.. gonna pick it up on sunday at some point. really hopin its gonna be close enough to fit my exhaust thats still there.. 1 Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
okie dokie then... got that exhaust manifold, and it fits pretty well. only had to make one cut on the headpipe i built for the single cam. this was the mockup.. pre cut and weld. also got the intake stripped down.. mocked it up.. with carb.. random... heres some close ups on the plenum area.. and then heres the intake all welded up.. so now it just putting it together.. i need to: mount the distributor pedestal install intake hook up coolant/heater hoses bolt adapter and carb to intake bolt up the exhaust cut flex pipe for exhaust fill it up with oil install radiator rewire cooling fan fill with coolant see if it will fire up. gonna try and squeeze in a few hours before work tomorrow. might drive it to work if it get it goin quickly.. more to come.. 3 Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
queue zelda level up soundbyte...... got the fucker driving.. got up early and im a few hours late to work now.. but that dont matter. got the list of shit about finished this morning in the 40deg air.. yummy i always forget 1342 is the firing order.. i always do 1432.. D is for slysdexia!! lol in any case, got it fired up. runs really well. feels the same as the single cam. with the small cams i expected it to. its so quiet too. pics.. pedestal.. head pipe mod.. head pipe installed.. and some others.. ill upload the videos a little later. gotta go to work now. major drag... 3 Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
drove to work.. did just fine. just took my break to test if the belt was gonna squeal with the headlights on. gotta see if i can tighten it up anymore when my shift is over. anyone got any grape jelly? lol noticed i might have installed the passenger side rubber isolator upside down.. the oil pan seems to be sitting on the crossmember oh so slightly. makes the whole truck buzz at around 35-40mph.. kind of annoying.. something in my steering column likes to make a ton of noise from the vibration too. just in the 30 miles ive put on it, its smoothed out some more. it runs really well. im diggin it! more to come... 2 Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
back again. 50 miles yesteday.. another today.. noticed at lunch thats its smoking. but only on acceleration. mainly right off ildle and it stinks like carbon and fuel.. i think its running kinda rich.. these small cams dont help either.. the ports did have alot of carbon in them, so running fuel across it is prolly burning off now.. in any case, its running better and better everytime i drive. it. the engine rubbing on the crossmember is getting more and more annoying too. ill fix it next weekend.. Charlie69
If it is carboned up, run it up to a steady 2000 rpm and trickle water into the carb. This will clean it up. I had a 79 Harley Low Rider that I had to do this about every 10000 miles. also used these technique on Onan generators in motorhomes back in the mid seventies. 1 Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
well the smoke continues.. i think its past the burning out point, but im not 100% about it yet. its still really foul smelling. it does the typical DE thing where it smokes on hard acceleration.. every DE ive seen with more than 100k on has smoked just like this. gonna try and compression test this engine here soon. wanna see if its got bad rings or of the oil is just from leaky valve guides/seals.. im not too worried about it. most of it is prolly contributed to being a little over carbed with the cams i have. i think with the cams and a tune up, itll run much better. we'll see tho.. Farmer Joe
thanks guys! well the plates are expired now.. state said on the registration notice that i have to get new plates too. kinda bummed. i dont wanna pay for new plates either.. hopefully tomorrow i can get a bit of work in on the truck. gonna try and fix the motor mount issue that lets the engine set of the crossmember. get the other steering wheel on it. find whats vibrating in the steering column. get a new throttle cable. i need some tight 90* 2.5in tubing bends to finish my exhaust too. i dont want it blowing on the tire anymore. the oil smoke makes it not have much traction sometimes. more to come.. sedition88
Get the vintage ones 1 Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
the 4 digit ones? or is there a different one? i know theres some rules to have classic plates in idaho.. they say it cant be a daily driver. has to do less than 12000 miles in a year i think.. i dont have a way to track mileage, soo not sure.. Quote Link to comment
sedition88
5 digits, they don't track mileage, and it's technically for daily use, but I've seen a few that they use it every day. And you've got the chevy now so you wont drive it every day ;) 1 Quote Link to comment
wayno
I believe I figured out where these leaf mount plates came from, look at the early 510 wagon. That way yours can look like this, nothing will drag. ^^ hahaha yeah, story of my life.. lol well i finally uploaded all my pictures from the last couple weeks.. lets see... i re-did the rear shock mounts a few weeks ago. they hung way too low and finally drug the stud of my shock.. heres what we have now.. took them up like an inch and a half. put some new stock shocks on it.. rides pretty well. id still like to have adjustables since the springs are pretty stiff. but meh, its better than it was. finally got the 411 in the garage too.. oh yeah.. i changed the starter on the truck too.. check this out! and then just a bunch of pics of the truck... Farmer Joe
if i can get my hands on some of those, ill definitely put em on.. im gonna go with a a taller tire on the back when i get new ones. these mounts havnt touched at all, so we'll see. Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
well shit... i didnt think a whole week would go by before i could work on it again... work has me tied up with this stupid closing shift. the over time doesnt help my datsun working time either.. in any case, the bills are paid, and we still have a few dollars. should be getting the truck stuff done on monday. gotta get tags, fix the motor mount, and get a new throttle cable. then drive drive drive.. more to come. 1 Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
okie dokie.. the truck is all buttoned up now. got all the stuff done, and it seems to feel a little better. more to come... Quote Link to comment
