200sx's unite!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

Wow, an SX that looks worse than mine! A Ratsun if there ever was one. What are your plans for it? Full restoration? Keep it as is, drive it Canby next year just to offend all the owners of pretty Datsuns? Park it there with a hidden camera and record the reactions.

Len

Don't do ANYTHING to it exterior wise. Drop a Chevy 350 in it and upgrade the suspension. Give it a weak sounding exhaust. Kick ass at stoplights.

Could always use one of these and just make a downpipe for it?   ^_^

But honestly, I don't see the point in the swap. A lot of work to only have a tiny bit more power than the stock engine.

And if your car is a Z22 car, it's almost zero gain in power...

but when you throw the weight loss and what could be gained in the power department, a few parts and a tune and could easy have twice the power with a way lighter front end....

Not that much of a weight loss, if any. The L and Z series engines actually weigh about the same as an SR20DE, and maybe even a little less.

And how do you make an extra 70hp out of an N/A engine with "a few parts and a tune"?    ^_^

1981-1983 Datsun 200SX (103 hp or 77 kW SAE at 5,200 rpm)

The SR20DE carried nominal power ratings between 130 to 169 Horsepower

as far as weight, well there is no way I could pick up by hand the Z20 block that came out of my 200sx, and my friend that worked on more then a few SR's told me the block is less then like 40 lbs, and with the aftermarket support for the SR, I would say even if it came in at 10lbs over a Z it would still be worth it, now if you throw a SR20DET into the mix it's even a better option......

Well, I've worked on a few SRs also, and I can tell you it's not that light.  ;)

If you don't believe me, that's cool.

I have noticed a lot of S13 guys seem to think the SR is crazy light because it's a good bit lighter than the KA24DE they took out. That SR block is THICK, though...

I'm not saying they are cazy light, yes I understand they are thicker due to the AL being weaker and put on top of that the head is wider due to the duel cam and such..... all i'm saying when it comes to what it will take to make power the SR will take it over a L/Z when it comes down to how much work it will take to make the power i.e. Z block with a L head is about the same as making a SR20VET..... but i guess if you throw price in the mix and well it might be a bit less pricy to go with a L/Z to some point if you have a source for parts....... I do see both of those options way better then a chevy V8.

If you have for sure weights on the engines I would like to know, even though I'm not going with either one of them but I have tried to find them a few times.

well off in the search of parts and such for my build........

Fully dressed L20b was 270, CA18DET was 285, SR20DET was 315. Both turbo motors weighed with a stainless exhaust manifold so add a few pounds for the stock piece (and less weight for a stainless header on an L-series). I'd bet that puts the SR20DE in the 305~ range?

Side note, VG30E was closer to 350. But lordy was it fun to drive...

Side note two, these didn't include transmission weights. The KA/CA/SR/VG trans weights should be very similar, if not identical. I'd wager the L/Z 5spd is at least 5-8 pounds lighter.

thanks for the info, so would I be wrong in thinking a Z20/Z22 would be a few pounds more then a L due to the EFI?  Yea the Z20/22 transmission is light, I know I can put one in with out a tranny jack and not a issue to pick up by myself...... So I was wrong in thinking the SR would be a lighter option, but then again I bet the VG was worth the extra lbs.......

And it weighs how much more than carburetion?

that is a good question, if I have a chance I will check, since I have a Z20E intake all pulled off and need to get it boxed up and ready for shipping but it is a decent chuck of AL

I'd wager at most maybe 15 pounds more than an L4? Engine weights are very comparable between L20b and Z20/Z22. But EFI versus carb'd, while the intake itself is actually a tiny bit lighter, by the time you add the computer, loom, AFM, etc (which you'd have to do with any EFI swap obviously) you are adding a goodly bit.

I bet the VG was worth the extra lbs.......

Yes it was.   B)

Well, once you tweak the front suspension a bit to deal with the heavier weight. And regear the rear end so that first gear isn't just a smoke show.

Sorry, just realized the intake weight I mentioned was for a stripped down version (smoothed, billet fuel rail, no smog junk, etc). Stock Z20E/Z22E intake is quite portly. There's quite a bit of crap on it.

then there is the airbox/meter that is in the 10 lbs rang by it's self

this is the whole system laid out.......

So it looks like I'm going to say good bye to my S110, the shell will be up for grabs so if you have the parts to make her a whole car hit me up.....

Maybe it's for the best man,,  as fixing it would be next to a impossible task.. Just find yourself another . it's like a dog or cat when they leave you,,, a cute little puppy/kitten will almost always cheer you up,,  and a vintage Japanese car has a way of finding you... Even if she ends up not being a Datty you should still post your results here to mix it up..
