natesmith8
Hey Everyone, I have come here a couple time and you all have been able to solve my problem almost immediately, so, I am here again. I am a complete novice at engine repair (as a heads up) I was driving one day out about 40 mph and the truck suddenly lost all power. The alternator is pretty new, replaced about 1.5 years ago. The battery has also been checked and it is good. I had someone tell me that it could either be a spark plug or the fuel pump. Any other ideas or help on this would be appreciated! If you need pictures, let me know and ill post them on here! Thanks again everyone! Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
Check all the ignition coil wires, had that happen to me and was a loose coil connection. Quote Link to comment

natesmith8
Does the motor turn over? Not at all. There is no power whatsoever Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Do your headlights work? If not, it is likely the fusible link at the battery. Quote Link to comment

KoHeartsGPA
Seems weird if it was battery related, unless the alt isn't charging as well, if you disconnect the battery while the engine is running it should keep running unless the alt is dead. Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
Some people also have a misconception of "turning over" what does this mean to you, op? Is the motor cranking and not starting, or does it not do anything when you turn the key? 2 Quote Link to comment

Doctor510
When that happened to me, I found that the alternator had a short in it, it blew the main +12V line from the alt to the main harness. 1 Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
If the headlights work, the main harness should have power. Do your dash lights come on when the key is in the run position? Have you checked the fuses in the fuse box? Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
This ^^ Ya, start with the fuses and work your way to the ignition switch, if your alternator had a short you should have blown a fuse or more depending on the severity of the short. Quote Link to comment

distributorguy
Headlight work, so the battery supposedly has power. How much power? Check voltage to see if its 6V, 9V, 12+V. If you have electronic ignition, the truck WILL die at 10V, but the headlights will still work. 1 Quote Link to comment
AlexDeLarge
Check and make sure the v belt on the alt is not loose. Happened to me and lost all power while driving. Quote Link to comment
willz
Can you jump the starter with the battery and have it turn over? Sounds like your ignition switch took a crap 1 Quote Link to comment
420n620
Check all the ignition coil wires, had that happen to me and was a loose coil connection. think you forgot to answer this important question.. This also happen to me and all I did was cleaned the terminals / connectors on the coil. to check if you got electricity to the coil is take a test light, ground the clip and then test each post on the coil with the ignition switch in the start position. If no juice to 1 or both post, you have narrowed down your problem. Good luck, 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
Not sure if 620 have a ballast resistor, if so check that Quote Link to comment

natesmith8
Hey Fellas, Sorry for the late reply, I was out all day yesterday. Like I said before, I am an absolute novice at engine repair or anything of the sort. If you all give me a specific tasks to look at, I can find enough information online to be able to get you a pretty decent answer back. I also can do any test that does require specialized tools if that helps. I just wanted to give you all a heads up, some of the things stated above were a little to broad and foreign for me to have any idea how to look at it. As of right now, I am headed down to check the fuses. It seems like that is where a few of you believe I should start. BTW, anyone know where the fuse box is? It will make life easier than searching for an hour. haha Sorry for being an idiot about all this, I'm trying hard to learn about it, but its taking time. Thanks again for all your patience and help! racerx
Check ur ballast resistor to see if connection is good. About 1 month ago, my car died and would not start. My ballast resistor, somehow got disconnected. Its white color about 2.5 in long, mounted to drivers side firewall also connected to ur coil. Quote Link to comment
natesmith8
I started a photo bucket, like I was suggested to do. Here is a link to the pictures I have taken thus far. http://s377.photobucket.com/user/natesmith8/library/?sort=3&page=1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
My recommendation is get a decent volt meter and learn how to use it... Start at the battery for a base line of what your voltage is and then start checking.... two places I would start is fuse block and ignition switch.... 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
And get rid of that fram on your next oil change.... that's gonna be everyone s comment when they see the pics.... I've proved to my self they suck.... no one here likes them.... so far bosch and wix I believe are top choice.... And just because you said your novice I'll add this ... What are you running for oil? Some modern oil aren't good for these engines... I'm using royal purple personally, some like rotella diesel motor oil... they are high in zinc and phosphate Better for flat tappet cams....
