So here we go. This is my 1972 Datsun 521 with an l16 .pictures will follow as soon as I figure out how. For now I just wanted to get my post started. I revived this truck about 15 years ago in San Diego CA from some guys back yard..... fast forward and I ended up back home in Massachusetts with my 521... yes it was my only mode of transportation at the time.. sad note I bought a 62 320 at the same time had to leave her behind.... gave to a friend... 521 ran and drove... 320 had a bad engine suspension etc and no title.... so i came home in august of 2005 and I will say my 521 didn't like the next winter... so my girlfriend now wife let me park it in her garage where it sat for 8 years, now the datsun got moved into what i call my work shop i was able to convert 2 garages into one giving me a 20 x 20 foot work area. at this point my almost 2 year old son would follow me into the garage while I worked on other stuff, he'd pretend to drive the datsun while i worked.. every day I'd look at the 521 and would say some day.... that's day came when my son started to speak. His first words were Mama, Dada and then dats... Around December of 2013 this happened and I couldn't wait anymore.... wife gave me the go ahead and it got started.... well the entire truck was disassembled much more than i ever wanted to do but that's what happened so every system was replaced or overhauled.. I am a back yard mechanic and never attempted this before... so now 3 years later i have a completely rebuild driveline and I am ready to put the 4 wheels back on the ground and put the cab back on.. and thanks to the ratsun community this has been a great sight for info.. I have some things I've done which I can't wait to share. Some problems I had and how I solved them. Next post I will get some of the before pics up and her current state. ... thanks to all

Well I probably should have done like Daniel did his bracket..... Mine came out ok...... Luckily the black hides alot..... structurally its beyond solid but it's a bit ugly underneath....

Have you tried ebay? There are hinge pin kits and complete hinges it looks like for the 720s....

Recently acquired Datsun 810/Maxima help please?!

I would look more at the pump and your fuel pressure..... Sounds exactly how my Chevy acted when my fuel pump died .... it would still idle then die with any touch of the pedal..

    I'm good then....

My Ratsun Datsun 521, now with L-20-B and a five speed

The best way I was told to check for speedometer accuracy is to use highway markers and the odometer.... Record your mileage, drive for 10 miles and record your mileage..... that would tell you if the odometer is tracking correctly.... Once that was correct I then used a GPS app on my phone to see what the mph was.... Even on my 521 I corrected the odometer with a ratio adaptor, but my speedometer is still about 5mph across the whole range... That needs a slight recalibration.....

Charlie I saw this comment to Daniel and I dont think its correct..... Daniel is this a long tail 71b transmission ? I think those pinions are the same as the z car..... they are shorter and on the right side..... Mine being a stumpy 71b, the speedo is on the left like the 63 series 4 spd.... the one I'm using was in the 5spd before, I used it in the 4spd, and I did have to rotate it 180 and cut the notch for it to actually work in the 5spd. I know they have 2 types 1 being offset depending on the number of gear teeth....
  8. There were rumors of people in southern California doing that years aho on some mountain and canyon roads that were big with riders... minus the nut trying to stab people.... beyond not right.....

    Questionable wiring

It looks just like the one I had to buy to replace the old turn signal flasher in my 521.... as long as it works..... It looks like the silver one is unplugged.... so if everything works maybe its replacing that unplugged one... As far as the tach adding one is simple... Usually 3 wires.... Ignition power Ground And signal from negative side of coil.... Mount where you wanna.....

Yup.... that was correct to do right.... ?

    Questionable wiring

Are you talking about those round cylinders? The clear one looks like a newer flasher .... and the silver one is an older one.... Ones for the turn and one is the hazards....

Not much to update got the 4 spd pulled out today and the 5 spd in place.... Removal was much easier than the installation, the hole in my floor was a bit to small, and covered by my sound proofing and carpet... I was able to use a tin snips to cut and bend a piece of the tunnel down and out of the way ... luckily this piece is separate from the cab so if I want to i can repair it... I didnt feel like pulling the seats and carpeting..... Either way doesnt matter how it got done, it's in there..... Just glad I didnt have the long tail transmission.... Next is to get the rear mount made and bolt the rest back together.....

    '77 620 KC Project

The quick answer is your good, I dont think you have to have it on the dash... and im not sure when that really started.. probably when they went to the longer standardized vin numbers.... I just got my 521 on the road this year and it was funny i didnt even have the top of the dash installed when i went and got a sticker.... it wasnt till he went to look for the vin on the dash , I was like "oh ya , door jam".....

    Just bought a 521

This may not even help but you can see the difference..... This first pick is just reference, if you look at the back side of the tierod you'll see they are both parallel to each other.... Those were what I bought,... these were what came off my truck.... Notice the back of the tierod, the left side is parallel but the right side is angled forward..... I'm not sure how to tell left or right from just looking at 1, but it should be pretty obvious if you hold it up to the one on your truck.....

    Just bought a 521

There is a difference..... It's hard to explain but I think the angle of the tie rod end are opposite.... If you compare them side by side you'll see it..... I know you cant swap them either, because I was lucky enough to get a right in the left box.... so I had 2 rights and they would only go on the right side....

That's funny.... I have no idea where that came from.... I didnt even see it till you said it....

I have extra bolts and stuff , so I should be ok.... I remember the starter because when I went to bolt it up to the 4spd there were no threads.... As far as the reverse mine was the forward most switch.....

I got the transmission ready for installation.... I was happy the reverse switch worked, and all the gears work..... What didn't work was the speedo pinion.... This one was in the transmission before, and never worked.... I always thought it was the cable... oddly it fit my 63 series 4 spd and worked.... what I found was for the 71b I had to rotate it 180 and now it works perfectly... But to keep it in place I had to cut the notch on the opposite side.....

Considering this is my first I think i did pretty good..... I'll get the cases together tomorrow and hopefully get it installed sat.....

one side complete.... My process to try not to hurt the bearings... Second side.... Complete....

I didnt heat them up, just drove them on like you said..... And the PVC worked perfectly, had nice thick walls... First bearing in the middle plate I just used a block of wood.... Next was the 5th/ rev shaft.... I used a piece of PVC braced against the wall to hold the bearing inner in place.... After I realized this gear was in the way, so off it came.....

It's the deep ones that have me wondering... the large bearing on the main shaft was a bitch to get off, that's the one that concerns me the most.... I was wondering if I could heat them up or not...... 2 could use the help the other 2 I think will be ok.... I could always use my propane heater in the garage to warm them..... it looks like this... I even have a small torch I could warm the center of the center of the bearing ... Not sure if any of that is a good idea or not.... worse case there is a local transmission shop that I should be able to get a little help from if needed.....

Excited for tomorrow.... Bearings showed up..... I also needed a new snap ring plier, broke mine removing the last snap ring..... I also bought a couple of 2 foot PVC tubes, I'll cut them down to an appropriate lengths so I can install the 2 bearings on the main shaft... hopefully that will work out... the others I should be able to use a socket or something.....

I decided to get the garage and my tools cleaned up and organized today, it was starting to become a real mess, and I got my bench setup for the bearings to show up tomorrow.... I also put these in the door today.... Most of the small things on my to do list are done now.. I was gonna start doing the door seals, but those seem like they will take some finessing... plus I dont feel like dealing with door and fender alignments right now if that's needed to seal the doors properly..... save that for another day... Gonna keep my focus on the transmission rebuild and swap and get the truck back down on the ground and driving....
