  1. Carburator and electronic ignition is about as far as I would go with a j13... those motors have even less performance support that the L series engine..... And sadly that 67 hp might be just the engine not what gets put down to the ground. so it might only be 55 hp.. The L16 engine tag claims I believe around 90-92 hp, to the ground it's closer to 67...
  2. Ya those hard parts are tuff to find... best place is the ratsun classified.. Performance wise its debatable, for what I have into my L16 to get the extra power It would have been more cost effective doing a motor swap. But to me everyone was motor swapping so I decided to build an L16 to be different... And I daily drive mine 75% of the year and love 2nd gear 6000 rpm pulls merging onto the highway ... Also lsd differentials are hard to find for the h190 axle....
  3. I also found this little write up about fuel filters... I always assumed I should see it full till I read this..... "Most clear plastic fuel filters have the outlet pipe down inside the paper cone, so when the filter is upright, the fuel only has to touch the bottom of the filter paper to get through to the outlet. But as the filter paper clogs up, the fuel has to climb higher to find clean filter paper. So for those filters, a near empty filter is good, but a full filter is toast and should be replaced. If the filter is mounted horizontally, all that still applies except that when new it will look about 1/2 full. The filter itself is telling you if it's still good or not." This basically what I have seen, so it makes sense to me....
  4. No the voltage is fine.... I actually thing the Carter pump doesnt like having a regulator after it.. Since I got rid of the regulator and placed the return line at the carburetor the psi has stayed more consistent.. with the current size restrictor I have in the return line I have had a consistent 4psi.... I'm hoping I can open the restrictor up a little and get the psi down to the 3.5.... Raining today so I'm hoping to get back into it this weekend....
  5. That's pretty much the problem with the 520/521, not much support... Its has gotten better, 15 years ago there was stuff I couldn't find that has been becoming available. Depending on what your looking for I'm sure we can point you in the right direction.... Fyi make sure you compare what you have to what is being sold.... Things like the front inner wheel bearing is wrong no matter where you order it.... I sourced mine by the part number on the actual bearing... Even the motor mounts and transmission mounts they try to sell are wrong...
  6. Ya I'm not a fan of the Carter pump anymore. I'm planning to get one of those facet pumps you mentioned before .... And yes I'm trying to mimic an oem setup, I am using a restrictor now... The reason i used the adjustable valve was to troubleshoot.... As far as the tank it's good, I had the tank cleaned and sealed years ago and when I did the modifications last winter I did reseal it with some stuff called redkote ... same as what the shop used before, good stuff.... This did not mess up my pickup tube because mine is actually removable. When I cleaned the tank I removed the old pickup tube and had them weld an NPT bung in place. I then used a threaded marine grade pickup tube, its trim to length and wont rust...
  7. So my fuel system still hates me, I took it for a ride last night and by the time I got back home I had just about no fuel pressure.... I had initially not added a restrictor in the return line because I was able to achieve fuel flow and 3.5 psi at the carburetor.... I still think the Carter doesnt like an external regulator.. so I bypassed the regulator and added a restrictor... Last night just idling I had 3.5 psi like I wanted. Then this morning I had about 5 or 6 psi.... The only good thing was the pressure stayed consistent, so I'll try a slightly larger restrictor and see if I can get it to maintain closer to 3 psi... I'm actually using my spare air correctors, they fit perfect inside a 1/4 inch hose....
  8. Those springs should not effect how you door opens or closes.... it only keeps it open if you open the door all the way....
  9. Ya I hate it but what can you do.... Someday I'll get better clamps and neaten things up... maybe.....
  10. And back at the tank I added small filter just so i could see fuel flowing back to the tank.... Still needs a test drive...
  11. Next I added a return line from the carburetor to the tank... I added a tee after the regulator and before the gauge...
  12. I also decided to move my fuel filter and add a correct fuel return line.... On the fuel filter I added an anti drain back valve between the tank and filter just to help keep the filter full... seems to have worked....
  13. Well the truck seemed a little unhappy with me Saturday, the idle was a little wierd and I was get air/fuel ratios up around 18 - 20... Turns out the exhaust pipe came loose from the header, I was able to tighten it up better for now.. looks like this winter I will be pulling the header to weld that connection...
  14. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Nissan-Spring-Return-30533-76001-/274819629050?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
  15. Got it, How does the hood height look compared to the fenders, is it possible to loosen the spring up, maybe you have too much tension.... Careful buying replacements some of the ones on ebay are not quite right for the 521... but sounds like yours isnt correct either..
  16. There is a small clip up near the core support, possibly behind the radiator.... my cable end slipped out of it and i couldnt get the hood open.... See if something like that is happening....
  17. Unfortunately that hood issue Is way to common of a problem... But they should free up with some cleaning .....

    Seat belts?

Lap belts for you.. You can drill and add an anchor in behind the b pillar if you want to do the 3 point.... Something like this...
  19. I think your thinking of the window channel felt.... that should be a basic ebay thing...
  20. I think that's what called... But its the metal crimp ....
  21. Thats basically what I did... Get something that has the welt seal as part of it... the welt seal is what attaches it to the metal around the door opening.... I'll try to find what I bought and let you know.... it's about 95% seal in my opinion.... couple spots seemed a little wierd but good enough for my truck.....
  22. Carefully buying door seals, the ones on ebay have the right profile but the material is not the same as the original... it does not compress the same.... I abandoned the factory seals and just used some generic stuff from mcmaster-carr.... In the door hinge there is a spring clip that does helps hold the door open, they tend to break over time.... check my thread " a 521 in Massachusetts " I just made 8 sets and shipped them out.... if you go back a couple pages you'll see what i mean .... I'm in the process of getting more metal to possibly make 12 more sets, if you need a set send me a private message....
  23. If your trying to go faster a 5spd swap would be a good idea... it get the rpms down to around 3000 instead of 4000 rpm trying to do 70... The valve ticking is for the most part normal simply by design... modern cars definitely dont make all the noise these motors do.... Just make sure the valve lash is good..
  24. Well he doesnt mind riding in the datsun, but had to take an inside shot. He is not big enough yet to stand up and look out the side window..... Hes been doing great at work, naps half the day anyhow....
  25. My little friend at work.... He was nervous at first but is fine now..... I took him for one ride in the datsun over the weekend just to see how he would be... he didnt seem to be bothered by the truck but the ride did get him a little nervous... maybe he thought I was bringing him back... hopefully that passes.... So I took the Nissan today because I figured just going to work would be alot for him... we will get the datsun after work to get my kid from school.
