    Carburetion

So I recently picked up a compete 38mm SSS carburetor setup from a 610 with the k14 manifold and all the linkage etc. I’ve done the research on both of my options and I am contemplating selling it to fund a draw through turbo set up..... BUT.... the “jdm” wow factor is really there to have these gone through by ztherepy and keep them. Really looking for some input from everyone as the goal is to have a motor that can put down around 150hp to the ground and could be daily driven. Went for a drive in a 620 identical to mine with a dyno verified 156hp and fell in love with the power, but wouldn’t be opposed to more. I understand the power curve would be quite different in a naturally aspirated motor compared to a turbo, but the ability to crank up power even more is sort of the incentive. The nice bit about the SU’s is the fact that they are an original bit of datsun “performance” and would probably be more reliable and easier to tune. Don’t want the dual mikunis or webers so that’s off the agenda. Turbo or SU’s Any reason I should sway one way or another?

I guess that makes sense, just looked at some pics I had of my motor and it looks like the manifold is a tube and not square.

Aha! one person to chime in on going the trurbo route.

Mike, what I currently have is a 78’ 620 with what I thought came with a square (not circular) exhaust port W58? I’m no stranger to head work, pulling the exhaust shields in the head and welding any issues that might arise from doing that certainly isn’t a problem.

Also wondering if there was a particular head/bottom end I should look for? If I remember not all z24 motors were the same?

Thank you mike, this is the kind of info I was looking for. I really like seeing the L series valve cover in there and whatever I can do to make some power without it looking aftermarket was the goal. Just out of curiousity, did you cc the head?

That’s more like it. I want to keep the L series look there, but I don’t want to do the same old dual Weber’s or mikunis.

I’m not worried about a ka being faster, and I’m really not worried about the money it costs to do it. Simply if the 38mm SU carbs would support 150hp out of a built L motor.

Maybe it was the 2.3 liter I was thinking about

Custom rods and pistons aren’t a concern, I can live with the money spent on internal work on the motor as long as it’s under about $5k

If I did a long rod 2100 with the 46mm carbs and possibly a different worked over head would that put me close to that number? I see those motors putting 200+ with dual mikuni/Weber set ups and figured I could have a safe bet with 150

Driveability isn’t too much of a concern, I honestly only take the truck out a couple times a year for fun. If it was making more power I would consider racing it, as the truck sits though our track in Portland would be a little boring. 92 octane is about the easiest to find around here and E85 is readily availible although I haven’t heard of anyone using it on a datsun, I ran it in my Mitsubishi evolution with a few couple bolt ons and a day tuning at English racing and made around 400whp and 370tq.

A rising rate fuel pressure regulator and electric fuel pump would make quick work of that issue, but since I’ve got a hp number in mind....I guess back to my original question, will the SU’s be enough to make the power I want reliably? I don’t feel like 150hp+ to the wheels is asking a whole heck of a lot out of an L20 considering it will be completely torn down and rebuilt to whatever I decided to do. My concern with the 38’s is that they won’t keep up with the fuel requirements on the top end. 46mm carbs are availible from ztherepy and I guess that’s always an option as they look almost identical and only cost a few hundred little more than having mine rebuilt.

Are the SU’s sufficient for a blow through set up? I was curious about how well they would handle positive pressure. I suppose having the guys at ztherepy replace the bushings on the housings would reduce the chances for a leak, but I honestly don’t know as much as I would like to know about SU’s. Has anyone successfully run a dual SU blow through turbo set up?

I think it would be possible to, but the turbo set up I had in mind was using a Holley carb intended for turbo applications. I don’t want to reconfigure the SU’s, and I’m not entirely sure they would work well on a blow through set up

I should mention these carbs would be going on a L20b with the w58 head if I kept them. I don’t mind head work, valves/cam etc as I know I would be doing the same with a draw through.

    • FOR SALE

Purchased and planned to use this set up from a 610 SSS on my 620, but was recently offered a good deal on something equally different and cool that got my attention. Gauging insterest, not sure of a price so I’ll put $500 and we’ll go from there. 38mm SU’s with k14 manifold, bolt into my W58 head on the L20b

    $500.00

  18. Previous owner hacked the ignition switch and harness off and threw some cheap universal switch in. Now there's only 4 wires instead of what I would assume would have been 5? It's a 6 plug with 5 pins. Did he wire it correctly? I'll be mating this to the dzstart harness and want to make sure I know exactly what wire is what.
  19. Is there any where I can buy a kit to replace all of mine with new ones? Or sizes of each one so I can get some made?

    Accelerator Pedal Sleeve Replacement?

Take a look at the thread in my sig towards the end I talk about using bike cable and kinda show how to do it

Hakobird?...Uh oh the 510 is the next Honda jk jk.

I like it, I'd like it more if they stuffed a robello L28 in there with triple webers

What did you do to your truck today?

It's crazy. Tough at times, but absolutely worth every hair pulling moment. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

What did you do to your truck today?

The Wife and the kids got me some cool "swag" to wear.... and since it's got truck stuff on it.....
