Oregon Secretary of State who fined Christian bakers $144,000 defeated

For the first time in 14 years, Oregon voters elected a Republican to a state office, but there's a bit more to the story than simply a surprising win in a deep blue state.

Lawmaker Dennis Richardson, a respected, though losing, candidate for Oregon governor in 2014, came back to defeat well-known Democrat, Brad Avakian, in the race for Secretary of State.

Avakian is the state bureaucrat who went after the business of the Christian bakers, Sweetcakes by Melissa in 2013. The owners, Melissa and Aaron Klein, refused to create a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. Though the bakery served gay customers, the couple believed that by participating in the wedding ceremony, they were condoning the marriage, which conflicted with their Christian beliefs.

Aaron Klein tells Independent Journal Review that the state garnished their bank accounts and assets to satisfy a $135,000 fine. In all, he says, the state took $144,000 from them.

Oregon political analyst, Rob Kremer, told Independent Journal Review that Avakian campaigned on the idea that he would use the Secretary of State's office to further his progressive political agenda and — surprisingly — that turned off a lot of Oregon's liberal voters.

        Would it be different if a Muslim catering business

was to cater a wedding,but refused to serve pork?

This actually happened here in Oregon. I recall a story came out about a Muslim establishment had refused service to gays and nothing was made of it. Whereas the bakery was targeted to be made an example.

I will try to find the article that had come across The Drudge Report.

^ Why is this L.O.L.? How is she a liar? (If you have proof she is lying please post it.) Do you have a heart?

The right thing to do what have been for her to kick him in the balls if and when the assault was going down or stab him in the neck with a hidden stiletto.

Makes me think of the words of Malcolm X;

“Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery.”

On the other hand that adult film actress seeking damages because President-elect Trump propositioned her did cross the line (IMHO);

"So you're a whore and you are mad at President-elect Trump for treating you like a whore, what...didn't he offer you enough money?"

If in business as a bakery, what you make for who doesn't enter into it.

In a business you have the right to refuse service no?

*yes it's a "discrimination" question if the refusal is on the grounds of a person's sexual orientation,race or religion*

Still the question remains why the gay couple wanted to be butthurt (pun intended) about someone who they came to the view is a bigot and make a public fuss about it and not move on to the many other places that would be available to them to make said cake.

oh, if she feels she's got enough evidence to convict him then Trump's defamation suit shouldn't be an issue for her. the greatest defense against a defamation lawsuit is truth.

Not sure what to think about this. If the accusation is true.. well she is obviously shaken up. But wouldn't the case need to go to trial for that determination to be made?  hmm..

Who knows. Just like her right to accuse and sue. Trump has the same right.

These are only civil suits. No criminal charges. If these events happened (not saying they did or didn't.) People really need to come forward at the time of the event for possible criminal proceedings.

They can refuse business the whom ever they please, it's because they said WHY they refused the business that it's discrimination. They you have said "get the hell out ya homos!" And it would be perfectly legal an protected under the first amendment but saying I will not serve you because you are a homosexual is discrimination.
