blackmarkit
Dang. Well I guess it's not that bad here in California. Does NZ have the same rules? If you were a engineer could you modified your frame or it has to be one of there engineers Quote Link to comment
Pedro
Dang. Well I guess it's not that bad here in California. Does NZ have the same rules? If you were a engineer could you modified your frame or it has to be one of there engineers NZ have even tighter rules in some ways. In Australia NSW I believe you can modify a frame, but you would have to work with an engineer to make sure they approve of any modifications prior to and after them being done, like welding, strength of materials etc. You can also build a car from scratch (ICV - Individually constructed vehicle), but that has its own challenges. It's all a bit of a grey area, because even though an engineer may sign off on something, the RTA (roads and traffic authority) sometimes do inspections and if they find an engineer has been passing dodgy stuff, they can revote your engineers certificate (as well as the engineers license to authorise engineering certifications). Problems arise when your car isn't engineered for a modification and something fails causing injury to another party, then you are fucked royally if they choose to investigate. Quote Link to comment
finney
Worked a little on the front. I had to trim the engine x member to allow the lower arms to articulate to lay out and move up high enough. There is not much room in there and it is going to be within mm of both the bag rubbing on the spindle and chassis, will look at modifying the lower control arm to get the bag sitting lower. Will get it in there without rubbing on either with a bit of work. THe bag is a Slam RE6. I could put a 5 in there and it would be much easier but that no fun. Quote Link to comment
Pedro
Fark that is tight, so do you now just put a plate on the lower arm to bolt the bag to, then make a box mount that comes out from the chassis? Quote Link to comment
blackdeth666
Wow I like where this is going! I'm excited to see how you put the floor back in. Quote Link to comment

finney
Today i smashed out tacking in the front bag brackets. Modded my lower control arm for the bag to sit lower. would be much easier to fit Slam 5' in, but i have some spare RE6, tight fit but they are in there. Set up to lay on my 19" Intros. Greiggy
how did you go with the 5 lug swap? i freakin love this build man !!! great work Quote Link to comment
finney
at the moment I just have the Hilux hubs bolted on, going to be super easy only a small collar/sleeve needs to be machined to sit over the spindle for the rear bearing and seal. will update when I it becomes a priority. Rear I currently have the datsun diff and axels stripped right back, going to see if a friend can machine down and drill out to 5 Lug, otherwise I will put a Hiulx diff in, I have one but really do not want to spend the cash on shortening it, a also plan on running the J13, Datsun diff is 4.88 and the Lux centres i have are 4.1 and a 3.8LSD for my 1uz The 520 diff needs to be shortened 20mm to fit the billets, but thats easy as there is a heap of un used spline on the axels. finney
did did some work today, was 40 deg outside, so damn hot. First the x member that has all the hand brake mounts on hung down a couple of inches below the frame, I decided to section it, lift it and put a c section in for exhaust. I also finished triangulating my lowers Quote Link to comment
blackmarkit
Great progress. What engine are you going to run and are you narrowing the stock Datsun diff? Quote Link to comment
finney
I'm looking at running the stock J13, I like the thought of that tiny little engine in the clean tubbed front end. next job on the list is shorten the Datsun diff, I have the axels at a mates race shop being machined down and drilled out to 5 stud. The diff needs shortening only 15-20mm, plan on taking it out of one side only. In saying that, I will be building larger exhaust cut outs ext into the x members, whilst i can easily do it. finney
some more action from a spare hour this arvo. Cut off the easiest leaf spring mounts ever welded onto a diff, so much easier than a hilux. Wire wheeled the diff clean and shortened one side 20mm. I spent a long time thinking about how to shorten the housing, i resorted to just committing to cutting, cleaning and welding. seems to have been too easy and looks and measurements are spot on. The most productive hour ever Quote Link to comment

kaoss
Very impressive bag job on the front. I'm not sure the differences between this and a 77 620, but I had a hell if a time getting mine to lay on re6s with a 17" wheel. I even had to z the frame a little. Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
great build!!!!!!!!! Quote Link to comment
