My "new" Datsun '71 521

Just got this 521. Its a 521 with over 400 000 miles but it runs sweet. It's very rust free and I love it. I've had other datsun trucks before, a 74 a 75 and an 82 4x4, but they were all basket cases, and I was a teenager. This is my first nice one. I hope to slowly update to a 5 speed and maybe a z22? I'd like to find stock tail lights for it and a stereo that looks classic, maybe even a stock radio if I can fid it.

Hi there mcdatsun, welcome to the forum. If you do the Z22, then the 5 spd. is easy, just bolt on a 1984-86 nissan 720 regular cab, short bed, 2 wheel drive pickup napZ 5 speed, it is a short shaft and the stick will come out the stock shifter hole with no modifacations to the interior. If you stick with the L block then the easy way is a dogleg 5 spd. out of a early 200SX, but that tranny is a POS if your going to do any hauling or towing, it was made for a light car, not a work truck. You can put that same 720 short shaft 5 spd. behind the L block, but it is a bit more involved. Let us(ratsuners) know what route your going to take and we will help, confuse, and cheer you on. By the way, has anyone told you we like pictures(Oics.) on this forum, lots and lots of Oics. wayno

On the realm you say its not running.

Look like its running here.

How about just leave it alone if everything works and just lower it and or put a weber on there.

I say roll it as it is.

I daily drive a 521 and it has a weber 38/38 L18. its fine for a daily. Have no desire to pump up the motor any more.

It's running, just not perfectly. It was great, but then started rough idling/occasionally stalling out at stops. I'm hoping to rebuild the carb tomorrow. It looks like it's in fairly good shape, so I hope just changing the seals and other bits that came in the rebuild kit will get it back.

I want to keep it looking stock (i.e. no plans to lower or chop anything) If I can't get the Hitachi working, I'll look to a Weber.

In the distant future (when I have a garage) I'd like to think about a 5 speed and discs up front.

But mostly I just want this beautiful little truck to cruise around in. I know what you mean about no desire to pump up the motor, I've never had so much fun driving so slow.
