Engine is already out of the truck so not sure how to test it at all at this point? And running because he says it was before he pulled it lol. 1 Quote

We cannot give 521 4 speeds away in the northwest, someone on here said he put two 4 speeds out in his front yard one day with a free sign on them, and when he woke up the next day there were three of them out there, maybe that was Hainz, but you know I don't recall anyone ever bitching about 4 speed bearings going bad like the 5 speeds. 5 Quote

If clean this would be encouraging, dirty... maybe just needs to be changed. Pop the valve cover off. If gray aluminum with oil on it, again, encouraging. If a dark tan or black patina the oil wasn't changed near enough. Pull the plugs, they are a window into what goes on inside the combustion chamber. If a tan color, slightly brown this is encouraging. If black or oily wet black with heavy deposits that would not be good. On the outside, is it 1/2" of caked on dirt/oil? Clean would indicate an owner that cared for his engine. Dirty may just be dirty and yet it could still be a good engine. 1 Quote

wayno Posted August 12, 2017 Report Posted August 12, 2017 Since it has the flywheel bolts in the crank I would consider looking at it, people don't normally keep everything together like that if it is scrap. But I do wonder why the flywheel was removed, if doing an engine conversion they likely would have no reason to remove the flywheel, why even remove the transmission unless it was removed for storage purposes, but again why remove the flywheel, I would not have removed it, I would have left the flywheel and clutch cover in place. 1 Quote

I have 3 trans laying around also. I would get a 521 as a spare. they just a little differnt on the 510 on the output shaft flange set up. yes it was me saying that. about leaving trans in front yard. datzenmike Posted August 16, 2017 Report Posted August 16, 2017 If engine and transmission are together, it wouldn't take much to bring a battery, jumper cables, starter, gas can and hose, a coil and some wire. It may have a starter on it but nothing to hook one up. Stand it up and check it has oil. Wire battery to coil + and coil - to the distributor. Jumper cables to battery + and starter battery - to the block. You could start it and run for half a minute. Won't tell you everything but shows it runs. It might smoke from lying on it's side. If there is rod knock you'll hear it over the open exhaust. 1 Quote

d.p Posted August 26, 2017 Author Report Posted August 26, 2017 Picked up the motor today, seller is going to deliver the trans in a couple days. Valve cover looked fine, head looked good from above, it turned over well (turning the crank), plugs were brand new. Just some sludge and rust here and there but it seems to be well taken care of. Its an L16 but some shit different than mine, this one came from a 73 620. Not sure what I am going to do with it, maybe just take it apart and give it a once over and put it on the shelf as a spare for my truck. Quote

He could probably blow it apart clean the carbon and reassemble and it will run fine.... Still for 200 and everything he got with it, spare parts are always good.... Quote
