five1oh
Small update.....when you go full bre it can't be full bre without decals, right??? I haven't installed all of the decals yet but I am loving how #wanabre is turning out. Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Also managed to get the rear ready for my 280zx rear disc conversion. Decided to cut off the backing plate since I didn't want to mess with the rear bearings or stub shaft. While in there I found out my drivers side axle shaft had a broken u-joint so I pulled that out for repair or replacement. Now I'm just waiting on my front 280zx coilovers, calipers, rotors, and pads from the510keeper to finish this up and have working brakes and get it as low as I want it. I also fixed my drivers door as it wouldn't latch due to a bad spring. Getting there.... datphu
Great thread. I remember running across your YouTube video of the white 69 510. Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So I got to spend all day today working on the 510. I took yesterday off and drove up to see the keeper for some parts: 280zx front shortened struts with coilovers, camber plates, brakes - the works! / a hood release cable because mine rusted and broke / rear axle shaft, and some patch panels . Managed to finish installing the rear 280zx disc brake conversion, axle shaft, and front strut assemblies with everything. My wife helped me bleed the brakes and I would've been on the ground but unfortunately I need some wheels spacers for the front.....so hopefully later this week. Anyways onto the pics: What I was rocking before.......it was pretty hard to stop with these since I had no rears Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr New rears!!! Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Fronts done: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Contact.....arrrghhh wanted to drive it so bad. five1oh
My wheel spacers came in yesterday and I put them on with no issues. Got the car on the ground and wow!! I love the way it looks Drive went well but still have a couple things to button up. Gonna lower the front a bit more, secure the rear brake lines, possibly swap rear ends, and then I will start driving a bunch weather permitting. five1oh
Thanks guys! I spent some time working on the car today. Managed to remove my extremely hairy rear end and put one I've been carting around since '99 (came with parts for my second 510). It had 3.9 lock written on it. The rear end in the car had a lot of play and made some noises so decided to swap it. It was a big pain to remove but once I found the shims under all the grime and got those out it made it a much easier task. I also managed to secure my rear brake lines and when I was all done took it on the freeway. Rear end worked well but 5th gear is making a bunch of noise but didn't pop out of gear. I will most likely be changing the trans soon.... now I have posi so it should make for some fun driving :) Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
After driving it a few weeks back I realized the 200sx dogleg transmission needed to be replaced. Thankfully when I bought my 280zx struts from James I told him I wanted the 5 speed out of the donor 280zx he picked up. After a couple weeks of begging he gave in and let me buy it. At that point I started preparing for the next phase. I picked up a crossmember and bushing from Troy and took my driveshaft in to be shortened. While I was waiting for that I decided to get rid of the ugly paint the previous owner painted over the sill trim. It was a pain in the ass to remove but so thankful I did. Changed the look completely: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr I also took the opportunity to change out the water inlet tube and the alternator: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr I also decided I needed to paint the white section on the tail panel: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
While my car was in the air I also decided to try and refinish the wheels myself. In addition you will notice I replaced the front signals with clear ones. All the years I've owned 510's I've always wanted a set and was eventually going to have my own made until I saw a set on eBay recently. The quality isn't amazing but it is good enough to run and I like the way it looks. I normally would have had them professionally powdercoated but didn't want to spend the money. While I was waiting I also completed the front spoiler and it turned out awesome for rattle can: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Measured my marker holes for fillage!!!! five1oh
Just a day before we were set to swap the trans my plate came in so I restored a Manteca Datsun license plate frame I had: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Picked up the trans from james and cleaned it up a little: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of the swap because I was covered in grease. My friend Eric drove 2 hours to help me put it in. It took about five hours start to finish by the time it was back on the ground (this included welding up my side marker holes). Unfortunately I got some bad info and we used the wrong collar, had to start all over at 6pm. Finished it at about 10pm and then messed with the wiring to my lights so we could take it for a spin. Good thing we had no issues because in the excitement Eric and I didn't bring cell phones or tools with us. We only had one working headlight and I didn't even have my license on me, anyways it ran pretty good and had a few vibrations. Earlier I noticed that the geniuses at Big O mounted two of my tires the wrong way..... I did manage to get a pic of Eric grinding my shaved markers: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 2 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
The next morning I was so excited I had to drive it to work. While doing the trans I also took the liberty to lower it another inch :) Next pic is a video if you click you can see. I can't believe this is the same car!!! It still has the rust holes but looks a million times better in my opinion....maybe the stickers distract from the issues lol: Video: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Work pics: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Made it home!!!! Then I took the two wheels off and had Big O fix they're mistake. I also put my center caps back on and added some Datsun valve stems Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Today I decide to clean up my pillar vents. I also drove it a ton this weekend. No super long extended freeway cruising but was on and off the freeway a lot. Probably drove a couple hours and am happy to report the alternator worked well and the car didn't have any overheating issues :) . Currently the only working gauge is the temp gauge (which is a plus) and the charge light. Need to get the fuel gauge working and will be swapping in my other cluster with tach :) Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr As you can imagine this car attracts a lot of attention and I love seeing people drive by honking and smiling. Even passed a cop today and didn't get pulled over. Need to put my side mirrors on soon... Next up is front grill clean up, side mirrors, and some dash and interior work :) 2 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Happy 510 day everyone!!!!!!!!!!!! It feels so good to be back in a 510. Last year was the first and only one I missed in the past 20. So thankful this car fell into my lap. Took it to a small meet in Vacaville last night and to be honest was worried I would break down. Happy to report I had no issues but definitely need to fix some wiring soon as I only have 1 headlight, no blinkers, and no fuel gauge. five1oh
So I got some more stuff done in preparation for datslocos. Finally got around to cleaning up the grill. Really happy how it turned out but unfortunately snapped off the mounts for the Datsun emblem when trying to remove....will have to fix that later. I ended up stripping all of the paint off the grill and headlight surrounds. Unfortunately my headlight surrounds were blasted previously so I decided to paint them with chrome paint.....not to happy with how they turned out but I have some good ones on the way so will eventually replace. I also masked and decided to give myself some custom hood and fender trim lol Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Also got around to putting the interior back in. First up was filling the hole from the tranny swap so I don't get hot air blowing on me all the time. Got an old license plate, some wire snips, and a rivet gun and done. Really happy with how it turned out. Put my door cards on and put my rear seat in along with the front section of carpet. Also mounted my Renown steering wheel and rare horn button with championship wreath. Also installed my trans am champion wood shift knob. I won't have the dash in by datslocos but that will be next. I have a factory tach cluster, uncut stereo mid section with tray, and a glove box section with 2.5 emblem to finish it off. On to the pics....
