earlyvws
Been busy preping the fenders, hood, doors, and rims. Got the fenders painted and the rims. The hood was suppossed to be done, but had a boo boo on the sealer coat. Try to paint hood tomorrow. Will give my insights on powder primer later. It's late and I want to get an early start tomorrow. Was not going to reveal the color yet but oh well, here it is. VW color Antracite early 60's. I don't like 2 tone paint jobs, but I'm thinking black roof. What do you think? And the rims. Can't wait to unwrap these! 2 Quote Link to comment

I've got a rough area in the paint on the roof of my 521,& I'm thinking of painting the top of the roof white. Quote Link to comment

earlyvws
Yes I will have some pics tonight. Got the cab painted and tires on rims. Been ordering all kinds of parts. Waiting for some. It looks like I may have to go lower then first thought cuz the tires I choose are a little smaller od then I was thinking. So I ordered some 3" lowering front control arms. So with the drop spindles and arms I will have 5" in front. Bought a toyota rear axle with a 356 r&p. this will give me my bolt pattern with our adapters. The adapters were 2" thick so by my math this rear end will be 1" narrower then stock rear with adapters. Looks like it will fit. Got the bel tech rear leafs but in shipping they lost some of the bushing. Tried to order the bushing today but it looks like it will take a week. Gonna look online tonight to see if I can get them faster. Working on frame stuff today. Really just getting measurements/ angles and finish stripping both frames. Need to swap over the l20 and 5 speed to figure out rear tranny mount. 1 Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
I am waiting.lol Quote Link to comment
earlyvws
So here is the hood Rims with tires, just got the center waffle and cap so havn't had a chance to paint it yet Been a crazy week trying to get this painted, but finally done. Found I had some Datsun mats in the black truck. Didn't look this truck over very well. After taking the mats out found this. [/url] Quick wipe job on mats. Are these 521 or 620 or something else? Anybody interested in them, I won't be using them. The 2 frames together So I was hoping to do all the frame stuff this week and get the frame and pieces to powder coat next Friday. But unless my control arms get here soon and I can get spring bushing I can't really fab up all the things I need to. With the Toyota rear end it looks like rear disk brakes are out. Since the drum setup is better I think I am sticking with that. So I couldn't get a real measurement but I roughly think it will be between 60.5" to 61.75" wide from outside tire edge to outside edge. Does anyone know what the maximum width that will fit under the wheel tubs? I need to machine the axles so the rims will sit flush then I can get an accurate measurement. 1 Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
very very nice, the mats are for a 620,were is the bed Quote Link to comment
earlyvws
Does the frame have a vin # on it somewhere? Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
wayno would no,i think up front on the frame rail. Quote Link to comment
earlyvws
Bed is going to get started this week sometime. I wanted to get the cab painted ASAP. It takes longer to paint the all the other pieces. Painted all in 1 shot. The bed i'm going to paint the inside first on one day. and outside a couple days later. Much easier that way. 1 Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
Man i like your style you dont waste no time.To bad your so far away. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Supposedly there should be a VIN stamp on the inside of the passenger frame rail, around/behind the shock tower. Good luck finding it! Quote Link to comment
DanielC
This is a picture of the VIN on a 521 frame, up close. this picture is pulled out, for reference. Quote Link to comment
wayno
It's very close to the starter on the top of the frame rail on the passenger side. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
My mistake. On top of the frame rail :) Thanks, wayno. Quote Link to comment
earlyvws
Ok so that makes my life more difficult with vins. I'll take some pics of the carnage the previous owners had there hands in. I will have to redo the engine mounts and tranny mount. Quote Link to comment
earlyvws
So if I match the L16 mounts on the frame will the L20 rubber mounts work. Quote Link to comment
earlyvws
So this is what I'm talking about. I havn't got the L16 off the other frame yet, but when I do can I copy where these mounts are welded to the frame and will the measurements work for the L20? Quote Link to comment
earlyvws
I am not planning to tear down the motor or tranny. But I want to take care of anything I can while it is out. So can you recommend seals, parts that should be replaced? I'm thinking clutch slave cylinder, clutch, and need to know what else to be getting. Same for motor. Taking all the accessories off, clean and paint block and change out things like alt dual carbs etc. Quote Link to comment
earlyvws
So I got the old brackets cut out and everything ground down. How critical is it I get these exactly like the original. Looks like I will be making them. Also for the lower control arm bushing, seen in the last photo, do you know of any place that sells them? I found some on a site that seems like it is in the Phillipines, not sure if it will get here in time. So I was thinking of machining some in Derlin. Any oppinions on this? This bushing for the torsion pin ( what do you think about using Derlin Bushings here?) 1 Quote Link to comment
alabama_lowlife
you might be able to get some from rockauto. They have a good bit of stuff for a 521. Quote Link to comment
