Ranman72
I figured I ran the battery low using my Power Probe to bench test the starters. So we swap Ed's battery into my truck. Rumble-rumble-rumble. SWEEEEET! We decide to swap the battery back, and just push start the 521 to get the system charging the battery. Jumped to life like a champ....for about 20 feet. Car sputters. Lights on on the dash. Slowly rolls to a halt. FUCK! We push it back, and decide alternator jumped ship. well at least it looks good right damn the luck time for new alternator oh by the way nice color Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
So Eddie started putting out an APB on a compatible IR alternator. DYSLEXICDIME came through with a brand new unit. Set me back some coin, but I don't care. The Dr. arrives with new alternator in hand, and I set to work. Get it bolted in. Go to slip on the belt. It is at that moment that I realize that the new regulator is much bigger, and hits the idler.. Anyone have a belt that will fit at 10:30 at night? Anyone even know which belt I will need? N to the O. We decide to pack it in for the night. I'll figure out a solution tomorrow. 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
So first thing this morning I grab a string and get a rough guesstimate at what size of belt I will need. Load my daughter in the car, and head to NAPA. Too short. Load my daughter in the car, and head to NAPA. Too short. Load my daughter in the car, and head to NAPA. Too short. Load my daughter in the car, and head to NAPA. Finally. Hook a set of thin jumpers to the truck and my Maxima. Cables start melting, and a small plume of smoke is released from the harness between alt and starter. We all know I'm a stickler for factory wiring harness smoke. Quickly tear off the jumpers from both cars before I kill both of my rides. Take another peak at everything. All appears good. So I take the battery from the Maxima and put it in Joseph Palasky. POOF! An even larger cloud. Pretty much cooked the wires between alt and starter. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
I text the Dr. and tell him the truck is dead. He offers keeping it at his house for the time being. I accept. Wife and I pack up the Maxima and head on over to the Dr's. Drop off my keys. He says he'll get it over there when he can. I hand him some towing money, and head back home. As I'm passing through The Dalles, I start getting texts that him and EagleAdam are on it. Towing the 521 from on top of Cedar Hills to Tigard, with Adam's 620. Why is that picture not found in the sightings thread?!? Quote Link to comment
Draynor
Sweet truck. Sucks about all the troubles. Weird thing is I had my harness smoke yesterday between the alternator and starter too. Luckily it only went through the tape wrapped around it. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
So there she sits. In Ed's yard. Fuck! Quote Link to comment

Weird thing is I had my harness smoke yesterday between the alternator and starter. Luckily it only went through the tape wrapped around them. Shitty. I feel your pain. Except now my truck is 200 miles away. I think what I might have done is cross the BATT and GND wire on the back of the alternator. I was talking with the Dr. just a bit ago. I was thinking I recovered before too much smoke got out-so I might be able to save the truck with a battery and a roll of electrical tape. We'll see. Here's the shots from the Dr's battery pile tester: With a load: Without: Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
So since we have a pattern of good news, bad news happening here so far... Let's restart the cycle a little bit. My friend, KevinSheats, texted me and asked if I had gotten the truck yet. Yes, the same KevinSheats as posted above. I say yes, and give him a tiny blip of the story. Kevin tells me he had just pulled a wiring harness from a 521 yesterday!!! Are you fucking kidding me!?! Really? He says sure thing. Reports he doesn't know how good of condition it is in, but it's not cut, spliced, or fucked up. WINNER!!! Quote Link to comment

I was limited on free money with buying the alternator last night and all. Plus, writing the story is more fun that way too. B) Quote Link to comment

banzai510(hainz)
How come this stuff never happens to me? I think what I might have done is cross the BATT and GND wire on the back of the alternator.? putting the Batt to ground would spark right away!!!!!!!!!!!!! If a IR alt you do the jumpers at the old volt reg harness. Was that dont correctly or you use a External Volt reg alternator.? You SURE you just didnt cross the jumper cables??? Im sure the wires melted in the fusable link area. No need to swap out a whole harness. Quote Link to comment

Im sure the wires melted in the fusable link area. No need to swap out a whole harness. Putting battery to ground would only spark if battery was hooked up-and had more than zero volts. And Dr. is the one who did the IR swap a while ago on this rig. Alternators have been an ongoing process. Maybe he can chime in. I'm sure I didn't cross the jumpers. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Putting battery to ground would only spark if battery was hooked up-and had more than zero volts. Most time if a battery was run down that low the truck wouldnt have started before this swap. Unless you drove a long lONG LONG time. sometimes the simplest things will make other things look bad. Like a bad battery cable end. A cig light volt meter would have caught this early or a standard in dash volt meter. Hope you get it running. Thats a cool truck Quote Link to comment
