kaoss
....as i sit on my ass playing video games instead of making gussets... This!!! If it wasn't for Halo I'd be done with my truck. Quote Link to comment
Rhapakatui
If it wasn't for beer, I'd be done with several trucks. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
Ahh yes... beer. Dare I say "wasting" both time and money. Some times I endulge in both beer and games; making fun of 12yo kids mothers over the internet. So I guess in the end it's time well wasted. Ok, screw this. Its amazing how a man in brown can motivate you. The rest of the suspension crap just came in. Time to get to work. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
finished up the bracing of the frame. just need to grind down the support plates and finish up the welds. making gussets and a few cuts still, other than that i should be done by the weekends end. I got some crazy epoxy primer too, some industrial grade stuff they use on oil rigs, so ill be spraying next weekend....then it has to sit for about a week before i can work on it. a full 6 weeks before its drivable. god the transmission and brake calipers back from the blaster too. i wanted to get the calipers anodized, but i cant find anyone local to me that does it. and im done spending money on little nickle and dime stuff. looks like the rattle can is coming out. BAM! more work tonight....probably wont post it untill tomorrows update. Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
I ran out of flapper disk and junk, so I didn't feel like making the 32 gussets I need to cut out............and then weld in when im low on wire too.Instead I painted and assembled the brakes and clear coated everything. Starting to put the hubs together as well. Its all still scattered, but its about to come all together pretty quick 2 Quote Link to comment
Jester
Impressive progress. Keep it up man, I want to see this thing at Canby. 1 Quote Link to comment
Spoona_Jay21
you should have someone chrome your tube frame. that would be pretty awesome =P On that note, i probably just missed it, but what are your plans for coating the frame? 1 Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
I got some epoxy primer im going to spray it with. Some industrial grade stuff. I dont care too much how it looks. I just want to keep it from chipping as much as possible. It will be a black semi gloss when cured. Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
so i finally got the adapter kit in. i just bolted up the tranny since i wanted to adjust the mounting points. i got hasty and put the cross braces in first....so the tranny hits the braces. a simple fix, and ill make the transmission mount for it as well. i also messed up just a tad on the mounts, drilled the bolt hole a bit too high, thats an easy fix though. i dont want to mess with it today, ill get it all adjusted and mounted tomorrow. ill have to make some shifting linkage probably. just some hem joints and turn buckels should work, thats later down the road though. looks like about a meter long driveshaft too. Cpl620
last little shot for a bit. school is coming to an end right now and im swamped. probably wont have this done in time for the main events. the engine sits in there on its own weight. i need to design a good way to mount and remove the transmission around the cross bracing. (the whole thing is off. the truck is angled back like a baja and the engine is raked forward.) its so close to roller status, im getting really anxious... 3 Quote Link to comment
'70dime
Man that'd be a bummer to get it all together and realize you had to pull the cab to get the trans out. How are you lookin on hood clearance? Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
Yeah, that was a main concern, being able to just slide the engine and tranny out. Ill have a removable rad support, but I still want clearance for the tranny to wsing down a bit rather than straight out. Im trying to designing it all to be easy together easy apart but also structurally sound. The hood is good. I have about an inch of clearance and more later on with the next oil pan I make. Though im going to have to mess with the firwall in order to get it back that fa in order to clear the hood. 1 Quote Link to comment

Could you take the cross braces back out and cut the center out of the main tube. At least enough to allow the trans to sit where you want. Then build your mount so it unbolts at the end of the tube. Cpl620
I could. I had a few ideas for it. One was to take it all out and move the design back about 8 inches, but I dont have the material for it and I dont want to cut into my roll cage fund. Thats what I get for rushing it. It would be the strongest option and I could just change the cross brace down in diamater. Another option was to cut a "box" shape out of the current design with an open end, and remove that main bar that goes straight across. Then just triangulate the rest of the connections. The only problem is there wont be a solid connection towards the front. Ill have to play with that design a bit more. (I think thats the same thing as cutting out the center like you were saying.) We'll see, I have a few weeeks to think on it since I wont have a chance to touch this thing for a bit. Quote Link to comment
heretic
I think those just may be the most expensive jack stands I've ever seen holding up the rear :) 1 Quote Link to comment
mikeanike99
just spent the past day and a half reading all of this and i will say i am greatly impressed with this build. i was thinking could you make it so your trans tunnel comes out and remove the tranny from th inside of he cab? and also for paint i will say that c is the best. hope to see this bad a truck at canby this year! if i can go (meaning if jacob takes me).... Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
Only the finest tools sit under my tent good sir... I keed I keed. Hahaha. And thanks mike, I may not make it to canby as time permits right now. I might wait untill next year when I can get the interior and paint all done as well. Having it all just slide out with the trans tunnelable to be removed was something I thought about, but since I plan to drive this thing everywhere I wanted to have a solid tunnel where no water or other gunk could seep in from. It would be a great idea for wanting to leave the tranny in and just removing the engine, but I wasn't sold on that. Who knows, ive yet to touch the cab, so well see what happens. mikeanike99
yeah, i see how water and crap could come in through the tunnel. Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
well i have some news......no im not selling or giving up on the truck..... i just had to cut my finds back, so ill be picking up a temp set of wheels that will last me until i can mold up my own flares.so its between option 1 and 2. personally im going with 2, but what do you guys think? ohhhh, and updates are coming on the 26th or 27th.1 2 Quote Link to comment
GusBus
one question, why did you go with struts when you already had double wishbone??? isn't that going backwards? Quote Link to comment
Cpl620
1. I had to clear room towards the frame for the exhaust to fit in the right spot. the original mounting points were in the way, with the towers, and steering box, steering shaft. and now i have power steering as well.2. aftermarket parts for the adapted suspension are VERY abundant. 3. i already had the whole suspension from my last car, so i didn't feel like spending money on a new A1 system.
