Man I love that when someone makes a suggestion you read it, then do more research before responding. Very nice to see, makes reading threads more enjoyable when you know the OP isn't a huge doucher.

 

Also, love the progress, cant wait to see this thing rollin!

Absolutely! I see so much more going into the projects on here than I have on other forums.

life outside the box is awesome ! i just did some catch-up, i wish i had an unlimited bank roll,i would grab a handful of people like minded as you and see what they could build . i dont post on very many other build threads, (mainly a reader) lots of cool builds on ratsun. just wanted to say " badass " it is gonna be an awesome ride !

Unfortunitly my deep freezer is only 3x3' but ice is good for future reference.

 

I dont think these will fit fully under the wells. I kind of accepted the fact that ill have to cut and tub the bed some. It will still look nice with the plans I have for it when done.

 

Haha, thanks denmark. That bank roll would be sweet, and its amazing what extra manhours can get done in one day. Though if I had extra hands on my body I probably still woundent be further. I stop, stair, and think out the design in my head for a while as I go along. Haha

 

Time for more work...

Well, my quest to have things not done half assed delayed progress a bit. i got two new tubes bent the right way, and just got them back today. Measuring out these towers in the same location has proven harder than i first thought as it has to be the same height and length. I also picked up a Q cylinder and got rid of that nasty ass flux core, so im going to go over most of the important welds again. Boxed up the top plates to meet the inner braces, and that's about it. This rear end WILL be done by this weekend. Im tired of posting pictures on the same shit. haha.

 

Question: in the pictures bellow. the angle at which the inner braces sit, from the tower to the frame, cause the tube surface to be wider than the frame. should i go down in size? I have 1-1/4". or should i stick with this, and just make a taper from a section of tube? my only concern here was running this in some sanctioned group events. Im pretty sure all structural modifications and and roll cages have a minimum diameter requirement.

Thanks farmer. ive been creeping around your build, its looking clean.

 

so, so close to getting the rear end done today, just a few more cuts and welds to do. i got the inner braces welded on to the top plates. a little bummed since the top angle is off by almost a degree, but w/e. it can hold a load, but i want to get the main supports mounted up before i drop it back down. and for some reason, those tubes were giving me a hell of a time trying to weld them, so its a huge messy ass bead.I have errands to run tomorrow, but if i can get done early, ill have this thing ready for sanding and painting in the week to come.

WOOO! 90% of the rear end is done! now i can take it all apart, and paint the subframe and junk. I still have to weld some things in, instead of fishplates, im just going to gusset the inner bends and redo some of the welds to make sure they are solid. lots of grinding and paint to come. This also gives me a chance to rethink the front design. Originally i wanted to do a similar setup in the front, but have a rear bar connect in the back along the fire wall. In not sure this will be the best idea anymore. I have to make it viable to remove the cab again if needed. I want to feed these front supports into the structure inside the cab with the roll-cage and everything, just for lateral load support since the towers are a lot taller up front.  who knows though, ill sit on it. Fab of the front end will probably start next weekend. I need to make some engine mounts first and place the engine in so i know how much room and the angles i have to play with...

OK. so i got the engine placed in for now, and ill probably start making some engine mounts for it tomorrow. Luckily i was able to push it back far enough to meet the cross member im using, and i have about an inch further i can go down. unfortunately, as expected, there are some complications to work around.

 

In order to set this back a bit further, and down a bit more, ill need to cut the oil pan a bit. that doesn't seem too bad. Oil filter will need a remote kit, but that was coming regardless....

 

Another problem was the headers and how wide they are. the connection too the exhaust is far too large and needs to be adjusted so i dont notch the frame. Hanging around the UZ forums though i hear that Toyota Tundra headers fit, and hug the engine a lot better. With this i still have complications with the steering column and would have to adjust the last port, but its cheaper in the long run. Running the headers forward is out of the question for now.

 

The last problem is the headers again. The mounting points the towers go to on the frame are covered where the headers are sitting. So two options, I cut sideways and mount the tubes on the outside of the frame. Or two, I make a side plate like so and mount the towers on both surfaces. Im leaning towards the side plates with reinforcement on the frame it self. (sorry for jacking your pick  c.davidson)

The Tundra 2UZ headers do fit. My partner in crimer ordered a set for his 1uz in his yota. They hug better, but has to move the oil dip stick around. Not biggie, though. From the looks of your frame clearance, I'm not sure they'd be of any benefit.

Im thinking of getting that cheap Ebay pair and just modding them a bit. Ill probably run a "C" notch through the firewall and cork-screw the path past the frame rails. Other ideas, opinions?

 

The pics would be great too. Im waiting for another pay check then ill be getting everything i need except for the tranny and adapter stuff.

Just thought I'd chime in... First off, nice build! I'm doing a similar swap on a '58 Austin a40 farina. 240sx suspension, ka24, etc.

 

Second, the reason that tubing kinked was those harbor freight pipe benders are for "pipe", whereas that Dom tubing is "tubing". Pipe is measured by I.d. and tubing is measured in od. (3/4" pipe has od of 1.050", 3/4" tubing has od of 0.75"). So tubing needs to be bent in a tubing bender and pipe in a pipe bender. Looks like you got it figured, though. Keep up the good work.

Haha right on. ive seen your 620 around the web for a while. Hats off to you man. I cant wait to see this austin you put out. thanks again, feel free to chime in any time. Im green in a lot of it. I just have the drive to do it I guess.
