zerow
You need to warn us that there is PORN in this thread... I got a hard-on from the window sticker, may have to call the doctor here in 4 hours... The car is hella straight, needs a little love on the rust issue(s). I can say that this car probably has the 69K miles you speak of, as my sedan had 83K back in 1981. The taillight idea, thanks for the props. I can't wait to see it. You need something to fill the third pod - I have a stock clock if you are interested (One tach only and its MINE!!!!!!!!!!) Your J-lines are in good shape, it appears you need the stainless trim from Shelly to complete the look. Very damn nice, can't wait to watch this girl go! Quote Link to comment

Abe Froman
the idea is to clean it up do all the prep work now throw some rattlecan on it till the insurance comes threw then take it to macco if i do the prep it will turn out good :D How are you going to fix the rust, do you own a welder? Quote Link to comment
bonvo
unfortunatly i dont have a welder but i know a few guys who do and if that fails there is a welding/ fabrication shop here in town and the rust is so minimal after i clean it up i might be able to get away with a bunch of tack welds to fill in the gaps Quote Link to comment

Hyphy
Hey Bonvo, If the panels that ur gonna sand have rust, you may have to get a lil far into the metal and isnt recomended...Id say either blast it, or use a rust converter product. Downing Paint in FF carries SEM products which produces a converter called 'Rust-Mort'...i have a lil left. but youll prolly need a full bottle of ur own anyway. Quote Link to comment
bonvo
for that fact they paint also....and congats on the new project yeah but they cost alot to paint like $1000 for supplies  maaco it will be Quote Link to comment

Hyphy
Maaco is cheap cheap... Havent had them do anything for me, but i would expect poor masking and prep and potential issues with the paint like fish-eyes/debris/runs to be common. Mostly cuz thats the hard part. Quote Link to comment

A good paint job is 98% preparation, 1% paint and 1% painting skill. I spray painted trucks at GM in '74-5 and they came into the spray booth spotless and ready to paint. Hey, if I could learn to paint anyone can. Maaco IS cheap so do all the prep yourself. If you miss anything, they will just paint right over it. Quote Link to comment

lynchfourtwenty
yea i was considering usin maaco myself for the se-r.. an ya ofcourse do all the prep work my self.. but then i saw this satin black se-r another guy did himself.... an i think thats what im gonna do to mine.. i sprayed the truck my self a few years ago but its faded pretty fast.. not to mention it rained the next day an totally fucked my paint job.. she looked like a black leopard.. ya know how they still kinda have spots all tho they're black... lol Quote Link to comment
mike
You could always use a sealer primer and do the "rustoleum/roller/wetsand the hell out of it" paintjob. It will look better than Maaco, you can say you did it yourself and it wont cost you hardly anything but time. Quote Link to comment
bonvo
i thought about that but that would mean my car would have to be white for one and for to i just dont have the paciance for that Quote Link to comment

Guest jaimesix
Bonvo. Maaco is not a great place for painting. Like it was said, they do not mask things, and , the end result could be fine, could not. It is a chance. You would be better off joining the auto body classes at school. Then you can work on your car under supervision, nice to have experts keeping an eye on the our enthusiastic yet not pro work. At school, once you have your car ready, the teacher ussualy paints the car, so you get a nice paint job, backed by a professor with experience, and you learn in the process. Meanwhile, yes, after rust treatment, spray paint it for protection. I recommend joining the auto body classes. I am going to join myself to work on my 710 ans Samurai. If you go the Maaco route, it is fine as long as you take the car over there all bare and masked. If you want to do the body work, the auto body classes are the perfect deal, because as you work, you learn from experienced people. Great project, definitely a stop when I drive north!
