I feel like I just slowed on the freeway to look at a car wreck.

The vin stuff makes this a big mess, leave it a 79 and either put the smog stuff on or drive it at the fairground only. Making it a 71 doesn't fix anything, that opens up a whole other can of worms. At least as a 79 the vin of the engine would match up if they inspected it, otherwise, as a 71 they will take it to the crusher because none of the components will match up. Then the guy at the yard would be irritated because the crusher would probably not go low enough to smash it!

Looks like it narrowly escaped the crusher already.

Can't see how you could make it a '71 620. It's all moot as you cant drive legally without a front windshield or rear view mirrors. Up here ALL trucks must have both side view mirrors. The rear wheels are not covered and will fail inspection.

Does it have seat belts? E-brake?

You can leave it a 79 with out smog equipment and still drive it on the street . How you ask ? It is simple, collector car insurance. Trust me that is the loop hole .

once again "I have not tampered with the origional 79 vin egueptment" it is still currently registered as a 1979 the truck is a 1979 and it still has everything on the truck to pass smog other than having the fuel cell but thats just visual

and just like slam_dat_sun said there are loop holes such as classic car insurance and telling dmv there was a frame swap and register it at a 71 so no smog and you can stick some side drafts on this truck

What??!? So, you are saying that just by telling the DMV that it is a swapped 71 frame they will just magically make it a 71 from a 79? What!?

Wouldn't they ask for a title to a 71? Wouldn't the CHP want to check the numbers on it?

I am only asking because I have never heard of such a thing!

Just fo conversations sake, in WA you don't need a windshield but you must have wipers

Only need 2 rear view mirrors, don't think it matters which 2.

there are plenty of people that do frame swaps just for instance my buddy picked up an old scout and also had a chevy astro van that wouldnt smog so he registered it as the scout that doesnt need smog in Ca and put the 4.3L v6 in the scout he had both clean titles so he just registered it as the scout

I bought vin tags and a clean pink for a 1971 (once again i havent tampered with) and was planning on bringing the 71 pink to the dmv and registering it as the 71 stick the new plates and reg. sticker on and your done ... because in cali 1975 and older doesnt need smog

I cant belive no one has ever hear of doing that.. by doing this you can stick a 454 big block in a prius car and not have to worry about smogging it

thats Bull crap you wont get pulled over for having no cat converter on a 30 ford with a 454 you can run lake pipes with some kind of silencer and be perfectly fine

almost every modification is against the law but everyone has tinted windows around here. and fenderless ratrods also but not to many ratrods run full fenders.... even thought its illegal... tint and my truck are two different things but if your a bitch dont buy my truck Ii drive it all the time locally even though it illegal

RATROD FOR SALE

So in Calif. I could have my '78 620, go buy an older 520/521 with clean title, get it registered, get insurance, stick the plates and sticker on my '78 and drive legally???

Link to comment

that is correct datzenmike many people do it all the time

even if you take the vin tags and pink from a junked out parts car that is 75 or older.. no one will report it stolen because I have the pink and vin tags so there will be no way for any problems with registering the truck as a 71 cuss I have all the info on that truck and tell dmv I put that frame under this body

but once again there has been no modifications to the truck or frame to make it a 71 and is still a 79 datsun 620

people sell crack and weed all day, that doesn't change the legality of what you're implying. the required smog equipment for the vehicle is required by law regardless of the year. If the engine had a cat, emissions equip it needs to be on there (in consideration of the law) my ka doesnt have any emissions equipment, it doesn't make it legal because its a 72. not hatin just statin.

if your a bitch dont buy my truck or even look at the truck if its gonna bother you ...... you do not need smog equipment on any car/truck in Ca 1975 or older

BULLSHIT! It is illegal as hell and if you get caught, it is your ass!

A few years ago I was driving my 71 Chevelle after I had just bought it, some cops sitting in an SUV next to at a light noticed it and started a discussion amongst themselves about what year it was, some said 70 and the others 72, well, they ran my plate to see and it came up as a 68!

Guess who got pulled over and grilled really good? ME! For a fucking DMV mistake that almost got me into some serious shit! They where seriously talking about grand theft auto!

Luckily I had the bill of sale stating it was a 71 and they let me go with a warning and I had to get it straightened out with the DMV!

Cops today know better than to not look under someones hood or check vin numbers with all the shit going on and they love it when cars come up with all kinds of numbers on them or missing numbers!

Cars that are not smog exempt can only have a an engine swap with a engine that comforms to the year of the car or if the engine was offered in the car that year or the engine is newer than the car! You can not just go stick a 454 in a Prius and try to register it as a fucking 4X4!

And remember, just because a car is smog exempt, it does not mean you can do whatever you want with it! I believe there is a member on this board who recently learned that the hard way!

And just for curiousitys sake, what happened to that 71? Did it show up abandoned in some alley missing some numbers?

skimmed through after the first page...

5k, w/ the vin thing (as of now) Its totally hacked up...and a rat rod....that's still pretty steep, really not trying to bash on the FS thread, just my opinion. If someone offered me 6k for mine Id take it, not hacked up, coilovers, 300zx brakes, ka24e, aluminum rad, only bit of rust is battery side inner fender, oh and its 100% legal 1973, numbers would have all matched if i didnt do the motor/trans swap, only thing its missing original is hood and wheels... oh and tossed the haggered bench seat in the trash

all that being said, original in great condition bring cash, hacked/customized to hell do not, it doesnt matter how much the owner put in....go to any car show with a for sale section, the owners never get what they put in...

more people want original, customized brings a more niche market

All that being said, interesting truck, not my style, but in its own right its pretty cool

read page 7, so you haven't tampered with the vin, still being reg. as a 71 could come back to haunt you the seller, isnt that kinda like fraud? If the frame isnt a 71, and im sure they could prove it, buyer gets into an accident, someone sues, shit storm waiting to happen...

on a side note, i know atleast in michigan tampering with a vin number can bring a 250k fine, plus licenses if your dealer, not shit to fuck around with

To lend a voice to the whole smog issue...

If your car is "pre 76" in CA, you do not need to get smogged every 2 years. However, any smog equipment that was included on the motor MUST BE IN PLACE!

NorCalDime was pulled over in his 510 that had a KA swap. He got sent to the BAR ref's and was told since his motor was a 95 OBDII, he needed a muffler, TWO cats (same as what's in place on 95+ 240sx's), the EGR intact and functioning on his intake manifold and the timing to be set to stock. Regardless of what year his car was or even if it would have passed smog the way it was, the smog equipment DOES need to be there regardless of the year of the car. 75 and older are exempt from TESTING THE CAR EVERY 2 YEARS, but it needs to be in "passing condition."

There is a year (forget which) that excludes you from needing to pass current smog tests all together. HOWEVER, if you swap the motor to something newer, same rules apply. You MUST be able to pass smog and have all smog equipment installed and functioning properly.

The loophole is that MOST cops will never look twice at an old Datsun. Chances are you'll get a ticket for everything on your car before they think about opening the hood.

EDIT: I personally love this truck. Wish I had the money, space and need for it. Hopefully it sells, man! I know it's hard when you're talking about something that heavily modified.

thanks for the kind words about the truck guys especially on a site called RATsun rat meaning in primer build a truck with a hot rod style/look it has the craziest canilever setup that i have ever seen chrome compressors lazer cut parts the list goes on and on... It has a rat look but runs and drives better and smoother than any other car that i have ever rode in

if memory serves, the 620 started in 72 in 71 it was still the 521
