banzai510(hainz)
I rearly change plugs but buy new ones when I get a new vehicle. Pulling the plug wire and no change shows it’s not firing Quote Link to comment
Scrapson
So your implying that it might not be the spark plugs? It could be the wires but I replaced them when I got the pickup the old ones were cracked the cap was “replaced” from what the guy I bought it from said. The rotor looks fine as far as the mechanic was concerned. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
What you're saying is you don't really know about the cap. Might as well get a new one. If it doesn't help, you have a good spare. What previous owner said: "Yeah I replaced the cap with a new one" What he meant: "It was new 3 years ago" Quote Link to comment
Scrapson
Fair enough I’ll get one ordered for pickup tomorrow. Autozone is my new favorite store. The guy had it for 7 months but the guy before had it for 4 years so who knows. The guy I bought it from ruined my seat and smoked cigarettes in it when I went to go pick it up Quote Link to comment
Scrapson
Alright here’s what happend yesterday when I drove it and been told there’s no spark on cylinders 3 and 4 my problem is there’s spark outside of the motor but in there well there’s no spark we pulled the wires and it ran the same on 3 and 4 but got worse for 1 and 2. I’m replacing plugs and cap Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
make sure the valve lash is good on 3 and 4 and replace the spark plugs I guess. wires correct for SURE!??????? I met a guy had a 240sx and said he had his KA motor out cause it was bad. Was free. I told ICEHOUSE on here and he picked it up. change the plugs and installed in car was running fine. Get the Moral of this story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
1-3-4-2 counter clockwise... Are you sure you got it? Quote Link to comment
Scrapson
I just got the plugs about to gap and put them in we will see if it helps. The amount of compression is high so I’m not sure if that might be making it bad Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The distributor cap!!!! Get a new cap!!! Plugs are self cleaning if they are firing. Get them firing Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I have rarely gapped plugs. Maybe for my Yamaha RD350. Just put them in and see if it fires. the fire order better be right. You said you have compression in those cylinder. So you just need gas and spark. Quote Link to comment
Scrapson
I had a buddy of my pull apart the carb he’s got more knowledge on this than I do the gasket between the bowl and the stacks is completely blown out. However today it did idle and it’s flooded to all hell so I’m letting it breathe over night and slapping a different carb on till I can order my rebuild kit for the 32/36 on it. Stupid Weber downdrafts. It idled for 10 seconds and fell flat on its face the exhaust leak is extremely loud so next is welding those. New plugs helped so much I gapped them to 40 thousandths which is about right between 38 and 42. So hopefully this weekend I’ll have scrapson back. The cap looks like it’s brand new there’s barely any wear but the rotor needs replaced so I orders it. Edited December 3, 2019 by Scrapson I’m wetarded. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
One thing at a time. Quote Link to comment
Scrapson
I suppose so. I’m going to be replacing the carb tonight hopefully it’ll help then if it wants to move I’m gonna have someone weld the exhaust leaks. At this point im betting with the new carb it’ll run like new. banzai510(hainz)
I cant see how 3 and 4 plugs were NO change when you pulled the plug wires. How can this be the carb.? Maybe the carb fouled them out. YOu would have caught this when it happen again and on different plugs then figure the carb was flooding out(smell of gas????) . Just so happens 3 and 4 were the weakest plugs and fouled out. Webers are great simple carbs. I rebuild kit is just a new accell pump and needle valve and some gaskets. If its worn out its worn out. Buy a new one they are cheap 250-300$ Edited December 3, 2019 by banzai510(hainz) Quote Link to comment
Scrapson
I never smelt the gas but it was there. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
A fault with the carb is not likely to cause two cylinders not firing. Get a new cap. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
this is me If it runs great for a few minutes until it fouls a plug then motor is most likely good. Bad spark or flooding out carb. look at the plugs I highly dought the rotor is bad. I haven't changed one in 10yrs on any of my cars Edited December 3, 2019 by banzai510(hainz) Quote Link to comment
Scrapson
I’m going to try the carb first to see if it’s that. The plugs were so old the SKU number changed Quote Link to comment

DITTO !! One of the first things I change when a new vehicle enters my collection are all the inexpensive, easy to change ignition parts. plugs, wires, cap & rotor, and points if it has them. To keep chasing a miss, or dead cylinder without doing this, is just plain silly, especially if you can get shocked by putting your hand on the distributor. 2 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
G Duax i think he said he swapped a Cap already Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It's been all over the place through 7 pages. I lost track. Last I remember he said he was ordering them but went off on fixing the carb.. Quote Link to comment
Scrapson
No I ordered the cap I was supposed to pick it up today but that’ll be Thursday when I don’t have work till 8 I’ll get it if it’s not the carb but I think it’s the cap or the distributor might be worn because where the little contacts should be barely touching but one is almost 20 thousandths away from the contact which is way more than the others on cylinder 4. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
1979 should be electronic distributor so I don't think it should touch. It just senses a signal I assume but never know. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Maybe he means the rotor to cap contacts. Quote Link to comment
bilzbobaggins
how would you be able to see and measure the rotor to cap contact? 1 Quote Link to comment
