reza
Over the last year, I sold my 410, 411, my pile of the rarest 411 parts imaginable and a basement full of parts. I swore off the 411 even though I love the car. The 411 is a true enthusiasts car and a genuine money pit. That all being said, I just picked up this 1967 RL411 wagon. It is a true survivor, complete R16, front disc, appropriate rear axle, complete everything. right down the street. Edited March 3, 2020 by reza 2 Quote Link to comment

MikeRL411
The heater hoses need to be rectified, you need a glass bowl and rag bag gas filter for authenticity, and black plastic under battery tray to complete the package. On the very plus side you have the complex heater intake manifold to water pump hose ! I have had to fabricate my replacements for a very long time. It is obvious that you have the British Borg Warner automatic transmission. Spare parts and complete rebuild kits are still available since this transmission is still in use in European cars. I am giving away a complete 4 wheel set of RL/WRL 411 wheels without the dog dish clips, so perfect for the RL/WRL411 at the September JCCS. If you or anyone you know will attend, it's first come first served. They will be stacked by my 1967RL411, probably the only one on exhibit, Turquoise color, license plate California "67RL411". You have a very good starter! Don't get frustrated, parts and help are out there! By the way, early VW heater hoses can be forced to fit the heater intake box water drain to ground that are missing on almost 410 and 411 sedans. 3 Quote Link to comment

Thank Mike, my first step is to find a dedicated parts car, piecing the parts together will get expensive quick. Going to look for a wrecked roadster and a roached pl411. 1 Quote Link to comment

MikeRL411
Those front seats are easily reupholstered. I did mine myself. A cursory glance seems to be that the foam bolsters are reusable, with the possible ingraft of the center section of the driver's seat. When I reupholstered my RL411 20 years ago, the then 30 year old bucket seat foam bolsters were perfect and need no TLC. The replacement vinyl was "wallaby" grain and was an exact match for the factory vinyl grain and color. So, any Kangaroo named replacement should be usable if not exact. One improvement that I made, the fabric on top of the metal springs is burlap. That's the brown crud on your floor. Burlap adds needed support to the seat bottom before it deteriorates. I added a sheet of the foam material that movers add between dish plates when packing for moving. DIY movers sell this in rolls and it is a cheap and firm way to save your soon to be too expensive recarpeting. It is also the exact size of the front seat cushion. 2 Quote Link to comment
reza
Seems the foam is decent still, thanks for the tip. Carpet is roached, anyone reproduce or will i need a parts car? I did give it a quick buff today, cleaned out the interior and door jams. Really might start hustling to get this on the road. nothing is frozen unbelievable, everything seems in functional aside from the obvious engine plumbing and timing chain cover and whatever work that'll need. last registered in 1995. This is a different one I haven't seen before. I used to have a radio delete ? , this radio cleaned up looks great though. Edited August 15, 2018 by reza 2 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Crazy to sell off all your stuff and then buy another one. When I sold off all my 510 parts, I pretty much accepted I'd never own a 510 again :[ 3 Quote Link to comment
difrangia
Damn, that's a nice survivor. Cleaned up pretty good. That Clarion speaker looks very similar to the one in our NL320. The push button deluxe radio is trippy. I could have a naughty affair with a wagon like this one !! Mid-60's cars are some of my favorite. These 420/411 wagons, and the sedans to a lesser extent, rate with VW Type-3 'Knotchbacks' in the raw understated appeal department. 2 Quote Link to comment

MikeRL411
JCWhitney sells a very good carpet set for the 411s. Caution, they have the careless tendency to send carpet sets for the 4 on the floor manual transmission no matter how clearly you specify column mount automatic transmission. This order just might be best done on the telephone. They also sell carpet clip sets that mate up with the factory carpet fasteners already on your floor. One caution, the front carpet is a set of 3 individuals that have to be aligned to give factory like appearance. If I could do it, and I did, so can anybody. 4 Quote Link to comment

reza
So now I can give you guys a proper update. I did not want to say anything until it was verified. for the last couple of years I have heard about my Aunt owning a Red Datsun 411 wagon, while going to high school here in the 70's. (Klamath Falls Or) She bought the car in 1976 but did not have a license, my Mom ended up driving the car for a year until my aunt acquired one. When this car came up for sale I figured it was the same one... red, 411, wagon, automatic in Klamath Falls isn't common. apparently it didn't go to far as I bought it a couple blocks over from where they grew up. what sealed the deal for me on buying it was the 1600 package of course, which my mom and aunt were clueless about. at the time, they just said it was fun to drive. The other night I had my Aunt, Uncle and Mom over to verify that it was indeed the same car. Had a good time taking photos, hearing stories about the 70s, drugs, booze and all the other gross things one would expect to happen in a high school/college kids wagon. Luckily I kept my high country Datsun license plate frame, suits the car. My aunt bought it in 1976 for 600 dollars. I bought it 42 years later in 2018 for $550.. apparently that's what its worth. Mum on the left, Aunt on the right. Edited August 23, 2018 by reza 5 Quote Link to comment
reza
Now here is the bummer. The oil pan was removed less 1 bolt, whenever someone tried to do the timing on it. the engine has been sitting for 20 plus years, likely frozen. I'm going to have to pull the engine and transmission to see what I am dealing with, re-gasket the pan and look into the bottom end. Now the real downer of the whole situation is I am working in a gravel driveway. Edited August 23, 2018 by reza 3 Quote Link to comment

reza
I should have posted in the project section, if a mod reads this then please move it over there. I was able to pull out the 1600 engine and trans thanks to Mike for the help. the bottom end looks great, I'll be pulling the intake and exhaust, painting the block and swapping to a 4 speed manual that I have. Goodbye BW35. Here is a parts car I found in a semi local wrecking yard, WRL411 wagon. sad day but I was able to get the grille marker light and rear bumper. I'll go back to cut the quarter panels off. Pictures make it look better than it is. Edited September 10, 2018 by reza 1 Quote Link to comment
