Or I'm just overly paranoid. I've been known to throw a wheel under a car. Even tho I already have both a jack and jack stand holding up a car. As a back, for the back up. Well, a) they were brand new blocks purchased five minutes before putting them under the tires a few weeks ago, and 2) Datsun 1200s don't weigh all that much. Also, you may notice that they are positioned so that the weight is transferring straight down through the center divider wall part as well. But I hear what you are saying, and don't disagree... I actually tried to buy solid cinder blocks, but my hardware store didn't have them. Edited April 4 by dimlight65 Quote Link to comment
datsuntech
If I may, cinder blocks are designed to carry the weight vertically as they would when building a wall. You have them positioned so the weight is distributed horizontally through the block. If I were to do what you did, I would turn them 90deg and place a board of some sort on the top to place the tire on. This is structurally more sound and marginally more safe. 2 Quote Link to comment

Agreed, but the load is still transmitting straight down through that center "wall" of the block, not cantilevered out in the middle of the face. The way I have them loaded is just as strong as an "upright" block. I suppose Juan could argue that the "upright" position would resist "lozenging," and Juan would not be wrong, but this is a static load so I'm not too worried about it. Quote Link to comment

I'll give you three downward walls to support the weight, though it's mostly the middle one. The correct way would have seven supports or at the least the center one and the two long sides to spread the weight. Do as you like. 2 Quote Link to comment

Yes, it is totally being supported by the middle one. Yes, if the car rolled a few inches either direction the weight would be out in the middle of the "span" between "walls" and not be ideal... AKA "bad." Yes, the strongest side of a cinder block is rotated 90° so all "walls" are vertical. I acknowledge all of these points. But I really think we're going to be fine. Besides, if something is going to fall on, and kill me, I would want it to be this car... or the Dajiban... or maybe Mia Khalifa... Edited April 6 by dimlight65 Quote Link to comment
Duncan
I vote horizontal with Mia Khalifa is the safest and most fun. Edited April 6 by Duncan 1 1 Quote Link to comment

I will have to measure it next trip to the shop. And speaking of the panel... She's back in place! The switches are: IGN - Ignition, STR - Start, HLP - Headlamp (Park lights when the ignition is off), HBM - High Beam, HRN - Horn, and FOL - Four Offroad Lights... Aw, who am I kidding? FOL is Fuck Off Lights! 🤣 Edited April 7 by dimlight65 Quote Link to comment

datsunfreak
As for the cinder block, what no one seems to be taking into account here is that it is impossible for the car to fall on you. It has enough ground clearance at static for either of us to crawl under it with room to spare. 😄 2 Quote Link to comment

dimlight65
The new navigator's footrest arrived yesterday... So I immediately cut it in half! Ok, yes. That is the old one, but I cut the new one in half as well. Why? Because John had a great idea... Three, half sections still make a 1.5x wide footrest, but looks a lot better than my original idea. And here's the fourth section as a dead pedal... So, we'll have the driver's floor... And the whole thing, sort of thing... I will have John inspect them and do a final up-gussying before final installation. 2 Quote Link to comment
Duncan
The box mounted behind the switch panel on the tunnel looks like a guitar effects pedal.. Curious as to what that is, or possibly was.. 1 Quote Link to comment

dimlight65
Dang! I was going to say "It IS a guitar effects pedal! I'm going for this effect." But, yeah... it's an intercom. 1 1 Quote Link to comment

Dimlight The Metal Gawd rules the wasteland!! Cool. I've seen people with headsets in a racecar, but never realized they had a simple controller like that. Quote Link to comment

It's an airplane pilot/co-pilot intercom I bought off of Amazon. IIRC, racecar intercoms were a bit more spendy than this Chinesium thing. 1 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I took the three sections of navigator footrest and attached them together with an aluminum strap... Then John applied purple grip tape to them... and the dead pedal & driver floor... We liked the look of the dimples rather than the holes... so we didn't cut out the holes. Of course, I am going to be very annoyed when something pokes a hole in one. But that's a "Future Tim" problem. 1 Quote Link to comment
