Eagle_Adam
I just tore down an L20 block i picked up and its the first one thats had these on it My suspicion is that it has somethign to do with an auto trans vs manual but i wanna know for sure Quote Link to comment
izzo
Thats some extra support for your trans... When that vtak kicks in, yo / you don't want that shit ripping apart. Could be a big danger to your manifold. 2 Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
are all L motors supposed to have them izzo? Quote Link to comment
izzo
Lol, dude idk i was just being a retard (myself) I've never seen one actually. Curious to it also. Thats the motor that came off that automatic 4 door 710, with AC if i recall correctly. Wait for someone who actually knows wtf it is lulz. Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
Some have them some don`t ,, usually why they don`t get used are , alot of times the trans wont have the holes to bolt them into . Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I have a set from my parts 710 goon. I also have a set from an S110 Z20E but they were aluminum. I gave a set away at last Canby I think. They will work with standard or auto. I think the auto have smaller tranny holes but could be wrong. I did rmove a set on a '79 620 motor that was a 5 speed. They sometimes get removed when changing a motor or tranny and just get left off. Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
none of the holes on them are threaded so they wont bolt to the trans no matter what Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
mike - so they are support pieces that are supposed to be on all L series motors? just aren't cus they have had 40 yrs of backyard mechanics tinkering with them? Quote Link to comment
Draker
I think even though izzo was joking, he is correct. I think its an added brace for auto transmissions. They be heavy yo! Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
The ones we recently ran into bolts go through trans not screw into,, not all L had them That`s why not all trannys have the holes sons 78 4speed shortail had them his 79 auto trans car had them none of the long tail 5 speeds we have have the holes for them Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
hmmmm, cant hurt to put em back then :D would still like more info if anybody has it Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
I would have used um, but we didn`t because ,,,, we can`t. More strenght is never a bad thing right?? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
I've had both cast iron and aluminum ones. I've seen 'em on Automatics and Manuals. My '81 510 Wagon has them, on a Z20S + Auto, I put them on the Z24 when I changed engines (all for naught since the Z24 was junk). Those were aluminum. My 1st '76 620 had them. The purpose is extra transmission support. They aren't threaded because they're bolted through with a bolt and nut. Quote Link to comment
Skib
there just extra supports. I have never noticed them to make a difference. even on higher power Ls (left them off my L28et) Quote Link to comment
RedBanner
Lol, I usually see them on stock cars. A series has them also. I always use them. The. Trans is threaded right there, I have seen dust plates without holes tho. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I should have said the ones I recently took of a '79 620 were nut and bolt. Oh I forgot... they're called gussets. Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
I have seen dust plates without holes tho. good point! Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, they are Gussets. They are not for support per se but are there to reduce NVH. Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
NVH?? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Noise, Vibration, and harshness. Um, they do that by providing extra support. 1 Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, but Datsun didnt fit them because the transmission needs support, but because they were.trying to improve NVH, according to the service bulletin. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Semantics. They could have reduced NVH with a rubber gasket. That would have caused many other issues, like alignment problems. Supporting the bottom of the transmission, while not needed from a weight perspective, reduced NVH and solved the NVH-related problem of the transmission bolts backing out due to harmonics. Sealik
I gave a set away at last Canby I think. You left me a set when you visited........... after Canby........... :) Yes, they are Gussets. They are not for support per se but are there to reduce NVH. Noise, Vibration, and harshness. Hmmmmmm.....probably should bolt up a few more sets in my 510..... Quote Link to comment
athoose
I have these on my 200sx M/T aluminum Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Ditch them. Unless you don't want to contract the deadly NVH. Quote Link to comment
