Bad or broken guides will make a clatter at startup. Mine made excellent noises before I put in a new timing chain. Now it's back to sewing machine noises.

There used to be a lower part to that guide...it ended up in the pan.

The new timing set had metal backed guides instead of all plastic ones. It should be a while before it's a problem again.

mines busted right after the lower bolt for the guide.. how far down is the guide supposed to go?

it had to have been busted before i got the engine, as it didnt have an oil pan to hold the stuff... i didnt get to see the original pickup tube either.. wondering if the screen was trashed on it.

who knows how much shit went through the oil pump and the engine. well see when i yank the pump in a few weeks.

had to do an emergency fix today..

the rubber around the carrier bearing is gone, and it was making it hard to take off without it jerkin all over.

i also caught a shitload a gravel when they were chip sealing the roads in boise. got a couple rocks stuck in the shifter, and got a couple caught in the back right  brake drum...

got this all done. i used some squares of thick rubber truck mat i had, and used the bearing hoop to squarsh the rubber in.

drive it around the block, and no more chatter in the driveline..

well see how long it lasts...

also, the carrier bearing fix i did a couple days ago is still workin really well actually. i can tell the bearing itself is really toast tho.. its been what most if the noise has been comin from though, so time to get a new one.

more, later...

yeah!

got the timing light on it, and found out it was at like 15deg AFTER tdc..

i couldnt even see the marks on the pulley till i adjusted the 8mm bolt on the dist. but that got me a nice window to time it with.. i can go past he 20deg mark, so im cool with that.

set it between the 10-15deg marks. prolly 12 or 13 in it now.

no more hard start issue either!

and i noticed the spark plugs were a nice light brown when i had them out.. guess its not as rich as i thought it was.

pretty good day of work.

best its ever ran!

runs just as good if not better than its fuel injected counterpart..

i need to take it easy with it though, so i dont fuck the timing set it has up anymore than it is..

ill get a video tomorrow.

mine and his are twins basically, and i didnt get why his was so kush and easy goin...

thing is, we put the timing light on his last year, and never did mine..

drove the 900 miles to canby and back on probably no proper timing at all. im amazed it did so well for how tossed together it is.

but its real good now. and now it really time for better brakes.

goose goose goose... lol
