Hahahahaha 🤣 Yes, we do like the Wilson brand! Apparently there are TWO different gear reduction starters...............one has a 1pc aluminum "nose", the other is a 2pc. All I know about this is that somebody out there (DP Racing??) offers a small diameter racing clutch & flywheel, so a stock starter does not work with that racing ring gear. You need the 2pc "nose" so you can modify it with a piece in the racing clutch kit.........?? I told my buddy he was nutz, but he insists that is how it works!

Looks to me like the 91-25-1003 is a standard L series starter, where the 91-25-1012 is the later gear reduction starter used on the 79-83 280ZX.......but again, it is a "commercial" application ie maybe a forklift or something!

We buy them at our local NAPA store.........not online, not off the NAPA webpage. Hainz said in a PM that he could not find it online, so I guided him to contact a store directly. I can't imagine that only our local store has access to the Wilson brand, as NAPA stores are corporate! PS I saw you mention in another thread that you are right outside of DC? I grew up in Silver Spring, Springbrook HS 1982. I was into British crap MG's back then, worked at Mountjoy's in Hyattsville & Motorhead in Arlington, but had buddies that had Datsun's, which is where I got addicted! I try to visit Datsun David Weitz in Silver Spring when I go home for a visit!

Part #91-25-1012 is it. Again, just a high quality rebuilt unit that we found & is the ONLY unit we will run now!

Hainz, I think the 280ZX gear reduction starter is a "torque" improvement, not a spinning speed increase......?? We use them on every high compression vintage race engine, spin just fine. FYI we tried the cheap rebuilds of the ZX starter, had them all eventually fail, had one actually fall apart............we ONLY use NAPA Wilson brand part #91-25-1012. This is THE part # to request, as it is a "commercial" application (but same starter!), do not think it is listed under Datsun/Nissan 280ZX! Simply a high quality rebuilt unit! We have only had one eventual failure, but the brutality of a full race engine will do that! 😎
  7. I'll pitch it again to Gerson, will start another thread beyond this! Thanks LS_Wagon, hope mrbigtanker chimes in too! 😎
  8. Of all people, you will have some input...........buddy Shane here in CO with his Cactus Green Goon (.....and CG 2dr & CG 4dr!) needs the JDM license plate surround trim (he has good side panels). I know Gerson at KlassicFab JDM, he says he can repop the surround trim & the side panels if there is a market. You mentioned you are NOS only with most parts, which I think is way cool..........do you think there is a market for this 3pc set as a repop? TJ

The casting of the flywheel, between an L20B & Z is different, but the overall outer diameter is the same. I have sold a handful of Z flywheels to L20B guys, cuz they are lighter, never had a complaint. I have never compared an L16 flywheel to an L20B/Z car, simply because you can't interchange them cuz 5bolt vs 6bolt. I have installed the 280ZX gear reduction starters on 510 L16 L18 L20B & Z car, but have NOT on my 521 L16. My 521 is about to get an L20B, but that is a few weeks out before I start on it. Sorry, no definitive answer, but my facts above clarifies SOME things! 🙄
  10. Thought at first it was the early Toyota van...........didn't those also get recalled/bought back? Cool van!! 😎
  11. I had a bunch of the rear diff shims laser cut, cuz I'm out of good USED ones! I attempted to list here in the classifieds, the listing did not take, so just gonna post here. Set of 4 for $15 SHIPPED. PM if interested!

These are the "horseshoe shaped" shims that go under the rear differential, on the four mounting bolts, the 510, often lost during a build! I finally ran out of these USED, so copied an original to have laser cut. Set of 4pcs (4 per car) $15 SHIPPED. I have listed on eBay, but discounted for Ratsun! PM if interested!

  13. The Japanese didn't really document vin #'s well, like domestic muscle cars did! datzenmike is correct.........1968-1969 had a "sweeper" speedo, 1970-1973 had a round speedo, but people have changed dash boards around before! The 70-73 cars are basically the same, with emission changes, some MINOR trim changes, some MINOR electrical changes etc........but again, basically the same! The 1973 had some "1973 only" parts ie illuminated switches, rear defrost (USA only 1973, Canada had more), so the 73 can have a l'il more value to the right buyer! Some 1969 cars sat on the dealer lots beyond Jan 1 1970, so SOME states would title a 1969 as a 1970 cuz the car sold after Jan 1. Other than that anamoly, I think most if not all 1970-1973 round speedo cars are titled correctly, unless somebody tampered with a vin & chassis!
  14. Yes, Gerson is doing sheetmetal panels, but don't think he is gonna do any other parts.

    black 1980 720

My 521 is a flat bed, already has an extended frame! I'm a 510 guy at heart, but if I get deeper into the trucks, a body swap might be a great project! We had a 1980 std cab short wheelbase 4x4 in a local LKQ 2 years ago.............now THAT would have been a great chassis to use!! Here is the truck! Again, it is badly rotted out & you can see that I had already cut off the mangled drivers side sheetmetal, so I could strip it down without gashing myself! The 77k original mile L20B & 5speed are already pulled, the rear axle is next to come out, once the hulk is positioned for ease of getting on a trailer! I WILL try to pass along the frame & body to someone else, otherwise it needs to go to scrap 😐

    black 1980 720

So the story goes that Datsun never offered a BLACK 510 to the public, however Datsun did offer black 510's to the dealership owners as demo's, which were ultimately eventually sold to the public. We have an original black 2dr here in Colorado......it is an original black demo car. I have also seen a 4dr & a Wagon in factory black, so again, they were dealer demo's! These 510's had a BLANK paint code sticker. That being said, I have a BLACK 1980 720 2WD..............the ultra clean 77k original mile paint code sticker is BLANK............looks like it never had a paint code stamped. Anybody know if this 720 might have been a dealer demo? Sad part is this 720 is rusted badly & needs a drivers side front clip from accident damage. I bought it for parts, had already pulled the low mile L20B 5 speed & rear axle for my 521 & pulled many other parts, before I saw the blank paint code sticker. However the frame is good (no accident damage) & I have a clean title for it! If this really is a black dealer demo, I will STOP stripping it down & offer it to somebody as is, probably FREE, so perhaps it would get a new lease on life!? Thoughts on this being a dealer demo cuz it is black with a blank paint code? TJ Denver CO
  17. Dash pad is 1969 only, near impossible to find good USED! For whatever reason, a company makes the 1968 dash CAP, but not the 1969, should still be available online or on eBay. As far as I can tell, the 68 moulded plastic dash CAP will fit the 1969 dash PAD, but the 68 has a little "hump" in the middle...........pretty sure that 68 CAP will fit the 69 PAD, just with that "hump" kinda sticking out a l'il............?? I think Jake Anderson aka "Jake Makes" on the Datsun Facebook pages is 3D printing NEW 1969 steering column covers............
  18. Cool! We are considering Road Atlanta this year.........I think maybe The Mitty! I haven't been there since the 90's! Main reason I tried to PM is I have a guy in FL looking for a 510 trans tunnel! Somebody attempted to install a 240SX floor pan, he wants it back to 510. He already ordered full floor pans & rocker panels from KlassicFab JDM in FL (check him out if haven't already!), but Gerson does not make the trans tunnel. You have a parts car that you might be cutting up? TJ
  19. Hey, TJ here! I can't private message you, so maybe nobody else can either..............??
  20. Was recently watching Mike Rowe's "Somebody's Gotta Do It", episode about first responder training, went to a training facility, had a staged set up of a collapsed parking garage or highway overpass (??), they had an 84-89 300ZX half squashed under the concrete, Mike was positioned in the drivers seat, the trainees drilled thru concrete above him to extricate him. My roommate was laughing that I spotted that! I think SHE first spotted the orange 510 in the pizza commercial........I was so proud! 😂 😎
  21. My suggestion is if part is metal, have it powdercoated in a "chrome-look" powdercoat. Very durable! If plastic, you don't have much of a choice...........you CAN have plastic "chrome plated", but it is expensive, so painting is really only other option. Any painted part will suffer from lots of handling, but proper prep is always key! I have not tried any of these "chrome" aerosol paints yet.............

    521 rear mud flaps

Hmmmmmm, those are likely an aftermarket, maybe thru JC Whitney......?? Never seen OE in color.............. The OE 620 had the white italicized DATSUN, painted white (see above pic) The OE 720 had embossed italicized DATSUN, but not painted, left black I think you can make either work on a 521, but you will likely have to fab up a nice metal bracket............to flimsy & you will eventually lose one! PS I ordered those new repop cheap FleaBay mud flaps from a seller in Thailand or ??, never got them, so beware, especially with Covid crap!
