five1oh
So I bought another car......typical story for me. For those that have followed my first Skyline build you will know that was a dream car for me and I have owned it almost 7 years now.........and I still have not driven it except for 5 miles home from work when it was delivered. I have tried to fill the void with other cars/builds but I keep longing for driving my hako. In that 7 years I have learned to start with the best car and build from there. Owning that car has given me pain and taken so much life and money from me, a true money pit lol. It is in a good place now but will still need lots of funds to complete. I sold SHAKOTN part 1 and that money is still in the bank set aside for the ongoing restoration costs. In the meantime I have other project cars including a 510 bluebird coupe. Recently I have come to the realization that all of the STUFF sitting around the house will not get put together quickly and it is very hard to manage and juggle multiple project cars. It is with these thoughts that I decided to liquidate a lot of the other projects I have and only focus on the 2 door hako project. While waiting for it to be completed I want cars I can drive which leads me to this newest acquisition. After 6.5 long years I can finally start driving a hako, albeit a 4 door version. My friend Reid has owned this car 15 years and done a great job preserving it and making it mechanically sound. I have talked to him multiple times about acquiring it and it just so happened everything lined up this past week. Does it have some issues? SURE! I don't know of a hake that doesn't lol. Can it be enjoyed as is? MOST DEFINITELY! My plans are to make it my style and slowly address some of the small issues with the goal of NOT taking it off the road for more than a weekend project. Welcome to the fleet family hako! These pics are my first drive to the gas station 🙂 Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 6 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Last weekend I spent time cleaning up my garage to make room for the car. Then on Tuesday James came to pick up the coupe and all the parts I had staged in the garage so I was left with an open space. WOW! A clean garage and mostly empty side yard 🙂 Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
On Wednesday I made the drive up to Grass Valley to pick up the GC10. Prior to leaving I got the trailer ready, loaded the straps, and had all the paperwork I needed to reassign my personalized SHAKOTN plate to the skyline. Below are the pictures from picking the car up. Reid was nice enough to give me EVERYTHING he had for the car as well as numerous banners, pictures, etc of datsun/nissan stuff. five1oh
As stated earlier goal is to make it my own in the style I like. My plans are to do small updates refreshing things as well as altering the look to match a 1970 gtr style. First mod was to replace the big late factory fender mirrors with Bluebird coupe mirrors as that is what was factory on a showa 45 1970 GTR sedan. five1oh
I washed the car and took it to the Hayward Datsun meet on Sunday with my 2 boys. Car runs awesome and was so surreal to be driving a hako. I loved every minute of it! 🙂 Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
After the show I drove it to Francis' house and he let me test fit his watanabe r type 15x8.5 -6. While at JCCS in October I placed an order for 2 more sets of Gotti from Watanabe (1 for 2 door hako, and 1 I was going to attempt to fit on 510). The narrower spec is the same as these R types so I wanted to see what mods I would need to make. Super happy and am sure I can get them to work. Car looks so much better IMO without polished lips and in 15 inch versus 14 inch. Can't wait!!! spriso
Andrew-- your car in June, 2006 right after it was imported into the States, one of four cars that was for sale at the time: a 1970 Bluebird SSS coupe, another Hako Coupe, and a Bluebird U 610 SSS from a guy in Napa, and this four-door which Reid bought. 1 Quote Link to comment
ShutterMeShort
WOW. That thing is sweeeeeeeeeeeet! Congrats on the acquisition! Patience pays off. I'm almost 7 years into my 720 truck project with only a few hundred miles on it. 1 Quote Link to comment

OMG Michael!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is where my hako story started (my 2 door)!!! Went to that house in Napa many times.....took pictures of the 2 door. Left notes. Knocked on the door....etc. I probably saw this 4 door but was so distracted by the 2 door. I remember seeing a fairlady z as well as 510 coupes, etc. Then a friend who lived in Napa said it (the 2 door) was for sale. The sign said $15k. I drove there immediately knocked on the guys door and called him. He wouldn't even come out to talk to me.....said it was already sold and guy was on his way from Los Angeles..... I was so sad. I was in my blue 2 door 510 at the time. Ever since that day I have been trying to buy one. Any chance that white 2 door is the one that became Marcos of SR20 store car? Or any idea where it went?? Would you happen to have any more pics of that lot of cars? Please post here or send to me 🙂 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
I have had a BLAST with this car so far. OMG it drives SO nice. Did a bunch more mods this week. Cannot wait until I finish my plans. Showa 47 to Showa 45 conversion ongoing. I found a guy selling a new bumper locally and HAD to pick it up. So much cheaper than buying from the motherland. Here goes bumper. Also added some trunk pics. I am amazed at how solid this car is compared to my 2 door. The rust in the trunk appears to be surface and definitely doesn't go all the way through. Also where the rear roll pan and rear tail panel meet is not rusty. five1oh
So the 1972 (showa 47) to 1970 (showa 45) conversion I am doing gets rid of the reverse lights in the bumper and they go to the taillights. To access the rear bumper mounts you remove the rubber boot and unbolt two bolts from inside the trunk. On the skyline the rear bumper brackets are part of the rear subframe under the trunk. Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr While the bumper was off I cleaned up underneath with some simple green Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr You can see the difference of the two bumpers here. five1oh
While waiting for the new rear taillights I decided to add the late model coupe (1971-72) GTR taillight finishers as it makes the rear end and lights look better. The 2000gt and 2000gtx came with a honeycomb center garnish that connects the taillights together so without it the rear end looks naked. Since I have a few sets of the GTR finishers I decided to put these on with 3M tape so I didn't have to drill the taillights or remove them: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 2 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
When I got the car I had no rear seatbelts. I borrowed some racing lap belts from Ralph while I ordered some simple lap belts. The belts came in so time to install. Under the rear seat was super clean with no rust. five1oh
Something else I have been sitting on since 2015 was clear fender marker lenses. Back then I found a set on Yahoo Japan and bought them. Then Jose started making them so I bought his set. Well over the years you can see one set got very yellow (YAJ) lol. I love clear lenses especially on white cars....but I also like factory. I'll run these for now and super happy with how they look: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 2 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Another part I bought back then was a Watanabe falcon steering wheel and separately this super rare horn button. The leather was hurt and I LOVE alcantara/suede so I had it recovered with the red center stripe. I briefly mounted it in my green rhd 510 but actually prefer wheels with some depth so it was short lived. This car already had a hub as well as a quick release which puts the steering wheel pretty close to me so I decided to mount it. I LOVE IT although I still need to figure out how to get the horn button to mount as I am missing a piece between the wheel and button. five1oh
no plans to put a spoiler on this car but I had to check my spoilers for the 2 door..... I have two trunks at CIOs getting painted because I like the look of no spoiler but also like the spoiler look. By having 2 trunks I will be able to have 1 drilled and essentially get multiple different looks: 1. No spoiler 2. Painted factory option spoiler 3. Carbon fiber spoiler 4. Number7 carbon spoiler 5. Number7 painted spoiler. The reason I was playing with the spoilers I have in house (Carbon factory / Number7) is I was worried the number7 would have a different mounting location. Happy to find out I will only need 1 set of holes on the one trunk that can fit both styles of spoiler. I absolutely LOVE the way the Number7 hangs off the back of the car.
