five1oh
My friend Jose has been working on a custom badge for me. After quite a few modelling session and test prints this is what he has so far. 🙂 So obviously my car is not a "GT-R" and about 7 years ago a company in Japan made a custom "GT-kai" (the kai character stands for "modified") badge for the later model skylines like my 2 door. They made a grill and tail panel badge. They have long since sold out (I bought a set back then) and Jose has been working on reproducing them. He has made a couple batches but I asked him to tackle the early badge so I could stop misrepresenting my car. TBH I don't really care about rocking fake badges but thought it would be nice to have a GT Kai so here it is: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Edited June 22, 2022 by five1oh 6 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So ever since the last post when I took the skyline to a night meet up with friends I have only driven it 2-3 times because I scrape the exhaust every time I go in and out of the garage. A hole started forming when I left for the night meet. I have been lazy the past month but decided to take the car to the Valt meet and start the swap of carbs from my FLZ to this car along with all the other engine bay mods I had planned. I already collected the exhaust pieces I wanted to run months ago and did not want to repair this exhaust but rather install what I wanted. Now is the time. First pic is a video of the exhaust falling off literally two blocks from making it home from the show 🙂 Next two pics are the carb setup and a header I sourced for the FLZ about 2 years ago that did NOT work because I kept the factory AC. Instead I bought a Fujitsobo for that car so I was left hanging on to this one. Hopefully it fits well: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr by five1oh2010, on Flickr The rest of the pics are from the trip to the show. Had a blast. five1oh
Work has begun! Can't wait to start driving the skyline again. I finally got the z in the air and was able to remove the last few bolts holding the triple 40's in. Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Next up was getting the skyline all taken apart. I pulled the car out and drained the radiator fluid first and then put in back in the garage. Since I am removing the cooling lines to the intake I decided to drain it so there would be less mess. I was happy to see the fluid came out mostly green since all of my flushes a few months ago. I started unbolting things and once I got to the downpipe and exhaust I found out the car is so low I could not pull it out so I had to push the car up on blocks and get a jack under it to remove the pipe lol. five1oh
Once everything was out I test fit my header and found it made contact with the block breather tube. I pulled it out and last night Ralph helped me cut it short and flare the end. I hope to get everything bolted back into the car this Friday 🙂 Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 4 Quote Link to comment

Been good friends the past 8 though lol. 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
put the breather tube back in. Test fit the header, and then removed and cleaned up this side of the engine bay a bit. You'll notice the original blue paint peeking through. I thought about cleaning until the bright blue went away but don't have the patience or motivation. I have no plans to pull the engine and repaint either. five1oh
With the engine clean and the tube cleared it was time to cinch down the header and see what ground clearance I am looking like. I originally bought this header for my FLZ but it was too aggressive and ran into my AC lines so it didn't fit. I am SUPER happy how it fits in the skyline 🙂 Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
In an effort to continue to clean up the clutter in the bay I removed the choke cables as well as the engine pull mount....does anyone know if the bolts go through to oil passages?? I highly doubt it but wondering if I need to plug them? five1oh
Red valve cover time 🙂 THis is a SMALL big letter cover that I bought back in 2015 lol.....it seems a LOT of my 2 door parts collection are making their way onto this car. Also running the Lonely Driver oil cap and crane necks for spark plug wires (will be installed later this week) Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 2 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Cleaned up my triple 40's and set them in to see how it would look. Amazing. I will remove and add the Datsun Spirit heat shield (already had one but had to modify to clear AC lines in the Fairlady so I will go back in that car). The heat shield and spark plug wires arrived today so I hope to button up by the end of the week! Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment

Stoffregen Motorsports
That's a great motor. Are you going EFI or triple Solex? Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Got the motor area buttoned up on my skyline. The SU throttle linkage that was on the car was too long so I test fit another one I had but realized the connections weren't the same and it would be easier to shorten my existing one. Also you will see the angle isn't ideal so I am planning to move the mount over. five1oh
I noticed two additional holes near the mount which is exactly where it needs to move.....this car must have had triples or a similar setup in a prior life lol. When I changed out my front struts I added the strut tower bar but never completed the tri brace so I made some mods to make the new throttle linkage mount and tri brace work together: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr I took some measurements to see how much my original linkage needed to be shortened by and then marked it up: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Next up was installing my heat shield and then tightening down header, intake, etc. Unfortunately I am an IDIOT and I never put the heat shield on first. I tried to finagle it but failed so had to remove the whole setup and redo. I added almost an hour of work because I had already weaseled my way in to tighten all the header bolts etc first DOH! Also tightened down my fuel lines When I was finally done.... 🙂 by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Edited October 13, 2022 by five1oh Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Next up was the new Datsun Spirit spark plug wires and Lonely Driver crane necks. Also buttoned up the tri brace and installed my Lonely Driver oil cap. Engine bay is looking so nice!!!!!! Damn that was a lot of work but SO worth it. five1oh
Throttle linkage shortened and installed. My bushing is missing so I need to figure that out. I also need to raise the mount about 1/2" to fully clear the heater hose but car turns on and throttle works now!!!!!!!!! All it needs is my dual exhaust 🙂 Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! five1oh
Finally got around to installing my Star Road super short hub! Because I am running a quick release it pushes the wheel super close to me. Very cool hub that gained me about 2 inches!!! Note the custom round nut they provide. Because it is so short that nut is necessary to fit in the hole on the quick release. (A regular nut won't). They supply a thread free nut and two spindles so that I can tighten it down. Crazy. KELMO
Holy pic dump Batman. The routing of the spark plug wires is awesome. I don't know if I have ever seen that on an "L" motor before. Very nice. 1 Quote Link to comment
iceman510
What plug wire set are you using to get enough length, or custom made? I have those brackets for my 510 and will need the longer wires to fit. Quote Link to comment
